Thanks for the video. A few comments: 1) My shoemaker dips the screws into resin before screwing them into. That way you don't have water going in, he says. Did your guys also do it or is that not a necessity? 2) premature wear at the tip can also be fixed by a cobbler by only replacing the tip w/ a new leather part. You'd keep the bulk of your original sole (since it still has wear) and only add a small piece of new leather to the tip. 3) sole protectors don't need to add to your sole. My shoemaker sanded down the original sole ever so slightly (w/o going into the stitching) and then glued the rubber on. It sits flush with the waist of the sole. This combined w/ a toeplate is the ultimate protection.

As always a very interesting video. Here in the UK I remember back in the 1950's/60's workmen often had metal plates on their boots. They were called SEGS and you could buy a selection of sizes and shapes on a card from Woolworths for very little money and hammer them on yourself, especially if you had an old Cobbler's Last. You could also buy HOB NAILS to hammer into the soles (Hob Nailed Boots) very popular with coal miners. Showing my age!

The first time I went to UK was in 1974, I was 17; at the time the most common shoes among boys were cowboy boots with tapered heels that wore too fast. So I did as many British guys did, and had a local cobbler add metal plates to my boots' heels. It was very common to hear the loud clicking when walking in the streets, and slipping was very common too.

Enjoyed your video! I have the “toe wear” problem on many of my shoes and talked with my local cobbler who installed very thin, but very durable sole savers on a new pair of Fifth Avenue AEs for me. I’m impressed with the shoe’s stability (especially on wet floors). More importantly, it’s now heaven driving my manual 6-speed transmission car in dress shoes-life is good!

I go for Sole Guards because they are the most practical for me. I live in a tropical country. Despite the dress shoes meant for office and events whereby I'm indoors most of the time, can't escape the wet pavements. I've started to favour dress shoes that come with Dainite soles too, for this reason of being more practical.

Excellent excellent Preston👌🏼 I’ve got to to say I personally think the best option would be getting JR soles (Double) then put a nice Magna Sole Protector and heel guard or get the Dainite Soles and just add a heel guard too. Best way to preserve any shoe, I did this on my prior Ferragamos and made them last 16 years with me wearing them everyday. The click clack of a leather sole is nice, but a quality shoe is an investment. 🤝

I personally prefer the metal toe plates. They work even better on shoes with chiseled toe design, as the toe area of the sole drags more against the pavement. I had lulu tips put on after a resole done by Trenton&Heath and another ones on Magnanni resole where I had Steve Douduklian remove all rubber soles and put on JRs. I’d do it on any resole going forward. I don’t personally like the sole savers, as the leather sole allows better breathability of the shoe while wearing in dry warm weather. Great video!
@paddyotoole2058
@paddyotoole2058 7 месяцев назад
This is all completely in your head and a total fantasy. Your shoe is not “breathing” through its sole. Putting a sole saver on will not have any effect on the internal shoe environment of the shoe.

regarding the sole guards you showed, i have vibram sole guards on several pairs of shoes i own. they're different from the ones you showed because they're vibram soles, and barely add any height to the shoes. also, the cobbler did a good job of sanding down enough of the entire sole area where the sole guard fits into to just to ensure that there's no extra height formation

A lot of people are using iPad screen protectors to cover the bottoms of their Christian louboutin red bottoms and it works so well. The entire bottoms look perfect after many many uses. And it helps with grip because of the rubbery/plastic of the screen protector. Obviously it’s to keep the red from scraping off. But I noticed it Keeps the flat bottoms nice. Maybe it would work for you.

Nice informative video. I would find it difficult to consider toe plates when a Dainite Sole can protect against wear (on all shoe areas) and increase durability in the same step 😎. It seems leather soles would take more wear in a shorter time scale in comparison to rubber soles. Plus, a shoe can be resoled from leather to Dainite. Once again, your videos are very relaxing, please keep uploading!!

You introduced me to French tips as well as Allen Edmonds, I’ve worn Stacy Adams my whole life with a Kenneth Cole here and there but that’s about it. When I was a teen over forty years ago, I used to use metal taps on heel and toe but they where definitely slippery but we enjoyed the sound of them clacking and scraping when we walked. I have been for the last thirty years using sole savers but they are unattractive and I add the cheap nail on taps to the toe as well to help them last but they are ugly underneath. I do like the French tips and wonder if the brass nails in the heels are for looks or add a little life to the heels

I seem to wear my heels abnormally fast. I had my local cobbler add heel protectors to all 3 pair of AEs I own(ed-I picked up and restored the uppers on some ebay 5ths ave since, I'm now at 4!). I was a little disappointed to see them be the plastic nail-in type. Nice guy, real nice in fact, but I was a little miffed that he buffed my mirror shine toe caps off with a wheel. So I may look further out. Love the look of the brass inserts as well as the promise of greater sole life.

Hey, Robert! Thanks disappointing to hear! A lot of fantastic cobblers have never heard of artisan restoration items like JR soles and metal toe plates. Look around until you find a good one or even mail them to a good cobbler.

I love those Triumph toe plates. The only shoe cobbler in New York that offers JR resoles and toe plate service is Columbus Park Shoe Service. I have yet to check him out but will after this pandemic stops.

Hey, rssin23 It’s called an airbrush gun. It uses compressed air and paint together. You can buy them anywhere.

Those are amazing, they look wonderful. I'm new to the channel, so glad I found it. Have you ever reviewed Beckett Simonon, I heard about their shoes, and were wondering if they were worth the money.

So excited to get into Allen Edmonds. I’m going to resole the dalton in dark chili in some red or black dainite soles. Got the saphir products in the mail for the uppers. Where are the meet ups? I’m in Orange County. I’ve collected boots for 1 whole year now, but about 80% work boots. Now I’m getting into dress boots and shoes.

Hi Preston, wondering what your opinion is on plastic or rubber, nail on heel guards? Also, do you prefer toe plates or sole savers more?

I may have to move to protect my toes, now! I wondered about the Dainite soles, of which I have a few. It makes you really respect how little worn some of the shoes on Ebay are. I check those spots very carefully before buying used.

When you add on toe plates and they are installed correctly, do they make a noticeable sound when you walk on a hard surface? Are they at all slippery? Do you have to get used to walking a different way with the plates installed?

Brings back basic training flashbacks where MTI's had metal tips on the heel of their boots so you'd hear every step of their marching. Those are not happy memories 😆
