Protecting Classic 911's from Rust - Part 1

Among their rivals of the seventies, 911's have solid rust protection. But that doesn't mean you're save. Here's my take on what to do - using paint, body sealant, stone guard and cavity sealing (Fluidfilm).
Together with • Porsche 911 1976: Whee... , this film covers the areas in front of the front bulk head. Two more videos about the rockers and the rear of the car will follow within a year's time.

This video and others on this channel are a gold mine (and curiously relaxing to watch). Invaluable. Only 'problem' is that it makes me ponder taking my car off the road and immediately work perhaps overdue inspection & repair/upgrade in many areas. In any case, thank you!!

Your method of using a hot degreaser makes every bit of sense. I have never seen this done before.

Yeah, I actually started doing this to not freeze in my winter cold workshop, when I realised how much more effective it is.

have you looked at acf50 or the likes ,,, also a drop of tape or paint about four inches from the end of the hose would let you know when to stop pulling the trigger.

Thanks, Pete. Im not sure about this. I suppose it must be true for the cars of a certain year of construction, but I’d validate with a RAL table before placing an order.

Again a very instructive video! I too am obsessed with rust, and all tips are appreciated! For the bracket, you mention “contact rust”. Never heard that. What is that? Just the rust forming between two parts? Also: “liquid rubber”? I know liquid rubber for roofing, some exterior flooring or gutters… same thing?

Thanks! Contact corrosion results from noble touching less noble metals with some electrolyte between them like saltwater. The less noble material will donate its electrons and simply vanish. I talk about it quite extensively in the series of videos about the red Carrera. Liquid rubber is a paint-like material that cures to a rather durable, rubber-like layer.

@@GreasyFingers Good to know! I always thought aluminum/brass/copper were the way to go whenever it's possible, not thinking that it could cause...anything... when put against steel! The liquid rubber is a super cool trick. I'll add it to my list in the future. Thanks!

I actually do, if the product makes a different. When I say eg „synthetic rubber based stone guard“ it means „buy what ever brand you want they’re all the same“. Hope that helps.

@@fiskarflugen Thanks, Alex. Please recommend the channel to friends. As a primer I use Mipa EP-100 (two component). As a stone guard till now I used the nr. 73250 Petec from the rattle can, but these days I’m switching to a cartridge based product which however I haven’t tested yet.

Hey Manuel. Thanks for the feedback. The product is just standard industry degreaser with a high concentration (3 parts water, 1 part degreaser) and a high temperature (50 degrees). The brand name is „Dr. Koch Chemie“.
