Restoring the 911 Seats

The ideal of a car interior, in the eighties that was a black cave. Chrome was the most uncool thing imaginable.
The interior of my 87 Carrera was beginning to show some wear and tear - with little time left to react to protect it from further decay. I repaired some holes and broken seams, touched up the leather and sealed it all for the years to come, seat rails and brackets were repainted.
ColourLock products such as Liquid Leather ("Flüssigleder") and Colour Fresh were instrumental to get the job done.

@@GreasyFingers My pleasure! Again, I envy you... the 70's/80's model Porsche 911 is the car of my dreams. Now, they're too expensive to purchase a restored model outright, and I have neither the time nor the skills to find an old one and do it myself as excellent as you have obviously done. I'm a perfectionist... so anything less than perfectly restored would not even remotely be an option for me. Anyway, congrats... and by all means... ENJOY! 🙂

Love your practical approach. You inspired me to look for an oldtimer cooperative...or maybe found one myself. Ah, the perfect guys club: one has a wooden Dragon sloop, the other an AN-2, the next guy a Porsche 356 or 911 and so on. Membership gets you four days a year with each! Don´t even have time for more...

@@GreasyFingers already joined an oldtimer club where I live (an hour north of Frankfurt am Main). Am still mulling over whether to go with a 356 or a 911. I´m 66 years old and finally have time and money. The cooperative idea came to mind because so many of my acquaintances have one or the other but have their toys locked up...what a shame! A heated barn with a level concrete floor is what I `m looking for now to set up shop. Keep your fingers crossed!

Great vid. I don't have to do any of this to the reddish seats on my 1984 Carrera Cabrio yet BUt very useful info. I hate the plastic seat back release catches on the side of the upright seat squab. They are a push fit with small metal sprimg clips but the plastic is weak.

Great vid. To get the grain of the leather "putty" just take a scrap piece of leather, or even vinyl that has a leather grain, and press it in to the soft putty before it dries and it will leave the grain in it when it dries.

Thanks, Roy. Removing the seats is almost too easy to mention. Just loosen four screws and you’re done. Note that the Carreras don’t have simple nuts to keep the seats in place, but small steel bars with threads, I suppose as a measure of crash safety.

When I originally bought my '83 sc I treated my dry, brown leather seats with bees wax and now find the leather has become quite stiff. I have since purchased a reputable leather treatment but it won't absorb into the leather because of the wax. Is there a solution to this problem?
@GreasyFingers
