What are proteins? Proteins are an essential part of the human diet. They are found in a variety of foods like eggs, dairy, seafood, legumes, meats, nuts, and seeds. Regardless of the source, the protein that we eat gets broken down and reformed into new proteins in our bodies. Find our full video library only on Osmosis: osms.it/more.

One thing that you do need to take in to consideration about dietary needs is that there is actually studies done on efficiency of the take up op proteins from different sources. so certain animal protein like egg whites have almost 100% conversion where something like peanuts our body only use about 40 - 50% of what you take in. So more of certain plants have to be taking in to get same protein. I am watching this as review because I studied this in 2014, however I still remember from our textbooks back then. So great video, but I do think this is an important piece of knowledge to take into consideration for people who want to follow a plant based diet to see how efficient the protein take up is and then calculate how much you need a day

When you are comparing 64g of protein for veg and non veg people. Why the carb contents are ignored which is present in lentils, rice, bread, peanut butter?

I enjoy the scientific part and cringe when listening to ideology-based advice such as you could be vegan and have a great nutritional profile. Not sure why this part is added. I would emphasise the only foods with 100% bioavailable amino-acids profile are humble eggs.

@Iyoha Frank well, not that sure but I'll give it a shot. Proteins are a very significant component of the cell membrane of the eukaryotic cells(well, we're totally made of those) and they act as receptors on our cells too and helps us identify any dangerous foreign material or toxins in the body and therefore allow us to take action against it before it gets worse. Our hormones and enzymes present in our body( enzymes- which help us with cellular respiration which is essential for us to survive and digestion and many more activities...) are nothing but proteins. Now, this really shows how crucial they are for us. Proteins also provide us with energy through cellular respiration.

As a food scientist, for me the most impressive thing about proteins is that their main core (not the side chains) can react both as an acid and a base. That's mind-blowing 😮 That's why proteins are the main structure of our body 😮

That comparison between amount of protein in plant and animal foods is obviously set up to be cherry-picked and misleading. You don't even compare the same quantities of food! A fairer comparison would be % of calories in each food that come from protein, which is generally far higher in animal foods than plant foods.

Is there a video less dumbed down but still not a university lecture about this ? E.g talking about the exact way proteins are brocken down what the peptides holding the amino acids, why we need each amino acid etc Also I think it's misleading to say that 1 gram of protein e.g in red meat is the same as 1 gram of protein in peanut butter EXACTLY because it lacks in the amount of each amino acid and even combining it with other lower quality protein sources e.g lentils won't change the "scale" either ...

I like this channel. I've heard that protein pool is just the amount our bodies recycle daily, not related to the ingested amount. You should classify benefits of protein according to macro and micro nutrient benefits. Animal foods not just provide macro, but also micronutrients like cholesterol to make hormones and B12 for the conditionally essential methyl transfer requirements.
