Proterosuchidae is an early, possibly paraphyletic, assemblage of basal Archosauriformes whose fossils are known from the Latest Permian to the Early Triassic. Surviving the End Permian mass extinction, these animals quickly became the dominant apex predators during the Early Triassic. Members of the group were superficially crocodile-like, with distinctive notches at the tip of their upper jaws. The group sits at the base of Archosauriformes, with related forms going on produce the lineages that led to Crocodilians, Pterosaurs and Dinosaurs.
