This was literally taking place outside of my office window. Occupy Wall Street spontaneous march through downtown NYC. No permits or permissions. The police were respectful, more so than they needed to be. The protesters made a lot of noise, both literally and figuratively. This took place Wed October 26, 2011.

Would be nice to have a little bit of background, not having seen this at the time and watching this 5 years later I had no idea what it was about. Only by reading the description I found out it was Occupy WS. Yet I still have no idea of the motives of the people walking in the protest. He asked nobody questions about why/what they were protesting. But this all might be because it's assumed I already know these things from watching the news. (Or following the NYC scene in Oct 2011.)

I really liked this video, because of how unbiased it is. You didn't try to make the the cops or the protestors look bad, you just showed it how it was. News channels should take a page out of your book and try it sometime.

Very unbiased labeling them as a mob throughout the video implying they were seeking some sort of justice through the use of force and violence , praising the police for being "more respectful than they should be" (what exactly does that mean? How respectful should they have been?).
@rihamy2nd
@rihamy2nd 6 лет назад
Alex Chew Look up the definition for the word “mob.” Its use was completely accurate. And as far as the police showing the protesters respect, yes, they definitely did considering the fact that the protesters were in violation of the law by walking down the middle of the streets and blocking vehicular traffic. The police were quite lenient.

The police weren't reacting since it was a protest against police brutality- the occupation was almost something akin of Martin Luther King where he'd march almost for the purpose of getting attacked, in order to increase recognition of his cause.
@joshuahill6153
@joshuahill6153 4 года назад
New Zealand lets this happen, they have permits to shut down the chaotic parts of the biggest city in NZ called Auckland. When the police don't do anything the protest happens and no one is hurt.
@realSethMeyers
@realSethMeyers 10 лет назад
What a bunch of sheeple. "Occupy" never accomplished or changed anything, besides ruining plenty of people's day. Most, if not all, never knew quite what they were protesting, or what they aimed to accomplish. In the end, everybody went back where they came from, having improved nothing.
@daveciaramella
@daveciaramella 10 лет назад
Shut up you moron. It's better to be out there doing something about the inequalities and injustice in the world than sat on your fat arse doing sweet fuck all. It's time for change.
@realSethMeyers
@realSethMeyers 10 лет назад
David Ciaramella Can you give me an example of something they've accomplished with their marching, their pounding of drums, their chanting, and their signs? Something they've changed for the better? Perhaps an injustice or a grave inequality in the world that they have eradicated with their efforts.
@daveciaramella
@daveciaramella 10 лет назад
Ah, please. THEIR marching and pounding of drums? Maybe not so far but history is littered with examples of normal people rising up and demanding change - and succeeding! Quit being so narrow-minded and content with a system that gets more greedy and corrupt year-on-year.
@realSethMeyers
@realSethMeyers 10 лет назад
David Ciaramella I never claimed to be content with the system. I volunteer my time in legitimate, effective endeavors such as working on political campaigns, community service, etc. Essentially you've admitted that so far, they have accomplished nothing. But maybe in the future something good might come of it? That's a pretty idealist, pie-in-the-sky way of looking at things, which is not grounded in realism. What they have accomplished is causing cities to lose inordinate amounts of money. The protests in Philadelphia cost at least $13 million all told. That money wasn't spent on public welfare programs. Or public transit. Or the improvement of roads and other public services. It was spent repairing damaged and destroyed public and private property, cleaning up massive amounts of litter, paying police overtime to keep the crowd under control, and all the other costs involved when you have a mob of unruly people overtaking a public space. Then you have New York City, which had to spend at least $17 million on police overtime alone. All of this and we're still waiting to find out what they've changed for the better. The Occupy mob is comparable to a small child, angry that he's not getting what he wants. So he crawls to the middle of the floor and throws a tantrum. He screams and shouts and cries and pounds the floor. All his parents have to do is walk into the other room to escape his protests. In the end, the child wears himself out and accomplishes nothing. The parents may be a corrupt system, but sitting on the floor screaming is not the way to change a corrupt system.
@holocenemammal882
@holocenemammal882 10 лет назад
Seth Meyers So you are dreaming of people behaving nice? Doing a polite political campaign that doesn't cost a thing? That improves welfare in the US? Well if you are so interested in cost-effectiveness look at this: the last election campaign in the us cost 6 billion $. People making use of their right are much cheaper. More than 120 billion $, does that sum ring a bell? It's the money spent in 2012 for waging war in afghanistan and iraq. You could easily save that money and improve the "worlds biggest democracy". Change won't be done by nice, well adapted us-citiziens, it will be done by those with courage and passion and a vision of a change that is overdue since the murder of JFK.

ChilloutSessionZ We don't live in a democracy we live in a republic... Thus regardless of what your opinion of democracy is, if you have never lived in a democratic country, where you have been personally and directly given power amongst a group of peers for a limited time, to make decisions regarding all life in that country, then your current view of democracy isn't as true as it could be. Id love to invite you to such a country but seeing as population density has grown to its current proportion i'd have to inform you that that is impossible to do.

Most people on the force are nice kind hearted people who understand the struggle others may have and respect that (as seen in this video) its when the protest against violence become violent by the protesters themselves to try and prove a point. This group handled everything very well! Made their point loud and clear without damaging other people's property and I respect that. (I was in NY with my family when this happened, was absolutely insane but from what I saw both the protesters and the police where kind about one another. The cops seemed to only be there to protect bystanders just in case.)

As a hard workinng 99%'er, I can't help but wonder how much of our tax money will go towards repairing damaged public property and police overtime instead of public assistance, etc. I'm all for change, but am very aware that quitting our jobs to protest the fact that there are no jobs does not create change. Sometimes making a point just to make a point can cause a steeper hill to climb.

I completely agree with the NYPD in this situation. These protesters we're blocking traffic, and not only hurt businesses that rely of quick deliveries, but also created a huge safety hazard as no ambulances, or other emergency vehicles would be able to get down the street.

What are the point of protestors I never got the whole "let's block off all the streets" I dosent change anything
@nonchalantd

As far I know, there are two things protests accomplish: they bring awareness and make some people who would not take action take do so because they now have some cost to bear, e.g., obstructed traffic would cause the police and people on those roads to react. The greater the costs of the protests, the more leverage the protesters have.

If you don't think protesting changes anything, then you were not paying attention to what happened in Libya and Egypt. Just because something doesn't work once, doesn't mean it will never work. The Civil Rights Movement didn't acccomplish its goals with a single protest. It took a sustained and organized effort that lasted years.

Majority of those people had no idea why they were there and were lamelessly following. Brutality? What about brutality between your own people?
