Think you’ve nailed it Dennis. I see no advantage to extra holes in the feeder. The openness of the unit allows the ground bait/ feed to melt , diffuse quickly and efficiently. Testing on the bank will be all you need! Look forward with interest to the field testing. I might drive up for a look! MIck L

You could Epoxy/Wedge a small piece of thin flat Fridge Magnet to keep the hook inside the feeder until the fish takes it out - The magnets are quite weak, but strong enough to retain the hook & a fish will easily take it out. Or even Epoxy it to one side or somewhere on the top rim??

Wonderful design, nice idea having a "dinner plate" design to retain the particle bait, perhaps are a couple of small holes in that section would assist ejecting the bait when the fish are feeding, if thats the idea.. and for bolt rig effect you could attach a tulip bead with a swivel at the bottom of the stemp and also i would like to place an order for a dozen of "Den Method Feeder's" please! 😀 Cant wait for the field test!! Just watched the other video, i see what you mean now. It makes a lot of sense now actually, explains what i been experiencing when fishing.. the fish seem to be going for the feed not just the hookbait! These underwater footages are what we need more off!

Thanks Khaursar. Holes in the bowl seem to be a popular idea. It's definitely something I will try on the next version, but first I have to test the current version, hopefully with an underwater camera. It looks like this could involve a few different versions mate.😃👍

A thoughtful design. I like Khausar Sanullah's idea of holes at the bottom of the circular section. How do you think increasing the height of the circular section would affect the feeder landing on the bottom in a lighter version? The increased weight of groundbait/pellets might cause the feeder to turn over on the cast or on hitting the water. I would be tempted to reduce the height of that section. Having watched Joe's video on the Preston site and the way the carp took the bait I wonder if putting a base of sweetcorn in the feeder serves any purpose except as an attraction for subsequent casts. An interesting and original variation on a theme, however, and one certainly worth developing.
@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen 3 года назад
Thanks for your comments William. The holes at the base of the circular section is a popular theme, so I will incorporate them into the next version. The height of the centre circle is a bit more difficult. I have definitely considered raising it, but, the points you raised about the negative effects were very valid. it looks like there may be a number of variations to the feeder before I finish it.😃👍

Very interesting & very cleverly thought out. As with everyone else who’s commented, some small slots in the side of the bait holding area of the feeder can aid the breakdown of the groundbait/pellets. Also, about your ‘live testing’ scenario on the river/lake with the underwater filming ~ instead of casting out in front of you, have you considered casting towards the next peg? Although you wouldn’t get the main flow of the river or the depths/water movement of a lake, it would certainly make it easier to set up the camera/filming, and by casting to the next peg, it would also give you the impact of a fully loaded feeder in a moderate depth of water? (Hope I have made myself clear in what I’m suggesting?) I’m really looking forward to your next stage developements of this idea. Well done Den, & here’s hoping you may catch a decent fish whilst live testing ~ that would certainly prove the design as ‘water tight’ (excuse the lousy pun🙄😂)🎣🎣👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Hi Ken. Thanks for your comments. I have an underwater camera called a Water Wolf which I may be able to attach in line with the feeder and then do a short cast to fairly shallow water. It's going to make the rig really heavy, but it would hopefully show how the feeder falls and then sits on the bottom.😃👍
@kennyscouse3388
@kennyscouse3388 3 года назад
@@FishingwithDen If it’s attached to the feeder/line, won’t that give a false representation? - as you wouldn’t normally have that weight on the line/feeder🤔Just a thought, if you want to have an accurate testing scenario.👍🏻

@@kennyscouse3388 It probably won't be perfect Ken, but if I keep it some way up the main line, hopefully, it won't affect the way the feeder lands. I will only know once I've tried it mate, but that's for the next video. 😃👍

1. Is the circle not to high? 2. Is the V notch bottem circle not to small and to sharp for the hooklink. I don't know if you can give it an fillit in tinkercad. 3. It may need some holes in the circle. I will not be surprised it the groundbait will stick to much. 4. You may be able to fit a elasticated stem from brand in it. 5. You may be able to test cast in on a grass field. If it will fly and land bottom down big change it will land bottom down on the bottom. At least I guess. Could be that shape and water resistant will still flip it.

Point 5 doesn't work although it sounds good there is bounce and added friction that doesn't come into play in water also the slower fall in water would likely give it time to right itself

With the flat bottom, when tossed into deep water, I wonder how much it's going to 'flutter' on the way down? Thinking being a 'flutter' action may wash your ground bait away before it gets to the bottom. But that's just a spitball guess. Need a friend with a swimming pool to get a good depth for testing. :) Maybe a keel shape to the bottom would help. Look forward to more on this! And I think you should call it a "Den-jo" (Kinda looks like a Banjo with a guitar back attached to it)
@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen 3 года назад
Hi Bert. I hadn't thought of a keel mate. If it does flutter down, that might definitely help. With regard to the groundbait though, I'm not concerned about it coming off on the descent. I just need to mix it to the right consistency so that it takes say 30 seconds before it starts to break up. We will know more after the river tests.😃👍
@wingnutbert9685
@wingnutbert9685 3 года назад
@@FishingwithDen I guess it depends on how big the flutter is as to whether it throws the bait. I would guess the shape of the bottom part would affect it as well. Your 'guitar' shape vs a round vs a square, etc. Kinda like trolling flashers. Some wag back and forth just a bit, others make wider swings. It'll be neat to see how it is casting it out with some mustard behind it and how it does with a longer descent.

Superb idea Den, personally small holes around the circumference of the circle would help push the loose corn out. For me though corn isn't the bait I would use for this. It's ideal for hard 4mils with ball of ground bait or micros around it. The mircors would sit lovely like a parcel and those fish would dig for the hard 4mils. I'd love to see if you could put a ball of paste in the circle surround it with groundbait and see how that performs as paste is deadly and you may have found a way to fish it at range. Personally I would make the lead match the shape of the tear drop it would fly better in the cast. All in all this looks a great idea can't wait to see it on the bank Den👍👍👍👍 Plus if they work I'll gladly pay for some and for the extortionate p&p 🤣🤣
@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen 3 года назад
Thanks Stephen. The holes will be incorporated into the next version mate. As for the bait, I agree that pellets may be a better idea. I will also try some softer groundbait in the hole instead. I can then pack a harder shell of groundbait around the whole feeder to allow me to get it out further and combat the effects of the river current as it sinks. When it hits the bottom and the outer shell breaks away, the hookbait and softer groundbait will be on show. To some extent, this might simulate a soft paste approach. The lead will also conform to the shape of the feeder over time. I just did it this way for simplicity for the first tests. I'll be out doing the first proper tests over the next few days.😃👍

Hi Den…really good idea to produce your own Feeders, given the lack of their availability in Oz. Your experiment with the corn/groundbait, was interesting regarding the value of the corn remaining “wedged” in the Feeder. Given that the hook bait was no longer in the Feeder, I’m not sure that whole corn would be of any value? If you wanted to “match the hatch” perhaps ground corn/maize would work better. The video that Joe/Preston produced for their new ICS Banjo XR Feeder range focused on retaining the hook bait in the optimal position in the Feeder. They came to the conclusion that the hook bait should be under the groundbait (i.e. if using a mould the groundbait goes in first with the hook bait last), rather that the generally accepted hook bait first. To keep the hook bait in the Feeder, you could make a line clip (Guru have this feature) which would reduce the hook length and also give you a “bolt” effect. I think that keeping the hook bait within the Feeder is crucial, otherwise you may as well use a cage Feeder.
@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen 3 года назад
Hi Stephen. I agree entirely that the hookbait needs to be inside the bowl and some form of clip may be required. I wasn't aware of another feeder with a line clip though, so I will definitely do a bit of research on this. Thanks for your comments.😃👍

@@stephenmanuel4815 Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Stephen. I'm in 2 minds about using the Guru style clip. It does have some benefits, but I'm not sure about how well it would release. This product appears to have been around for a while now, but there aren't many videos about it. There were also some comments about a clip like this contravening some fishery rules about free running feeders. I'm wondering if a largish shot (No4?) on the hooklength might serve the purpose of keeping it inside the bowl a bit better. It might also allow the hookbait to travel further before it reaches the end of it's tether.
