You can if you wish, but it is not necessary for the exam. Every patient will be different. These videos demonstrate what is required for the Florida state exam, but you can certainly go above and beyond...that observation shows you will be a great caregiver! Best of luck!

Yes, the bed control and curtain are not clean, so you will want to wash your hands after touching these items before gathering your clean supplies (only clean hands should touch clean supplies). This is a good infection control practice.

The bed is already at its lowest position as it was not raised for this skill. It is not necessary to raise the entire bed to a comfortable working height for the exam (some settings do not have adjustable beds, like home care) but if you DO raise it, you MUST lower it at the end of the skill. Please visit our website 4yourcna (dot org) and consider buying me a cup of coffee if this was helpful! Thanks!

@agi2281 For the Florida exam, you are not required to ask about cuts or sores, but as a CNA, you are supposed to observe for patient changes and abnormalities and report them to the nurse (including sores and cuts). There are specific infection control reasons that each cleaning and storing step addresses. Please consider purchasing our online program for greater understanding of these infection control processes. I cannot provide comprehensive training in this reply box. Thank you.

For the exam, you are not even required to disinfect, just rinse. It does not matter which way you disinfect, both are correct for the exam. There are many ways to perform the skills, as long as they comply with safety, patient rights and infection control procedures, they will be acceptable for the exam.

Yes, this is ok for the test. You just washed your hands before leaving the last patient. Touching the bed controls and pillow after washing your hands will contaminate your hands before brushing the patient's teeth. Either way is ok for the test. In a clinical setting, you cannot have a perfect environment with no contamination, the key is to minimize contamination and the method shown in the video is the most effective at doing that. Good luck!

The care plan will provide your specific assignments. It will indicate that you are to do mouth care on a patient with teeth or mouth care on a patient with dentures. Follow the care plan exactly. In a clinical setting, the care plan provides specific instructions on the tasks each patient will require and how to perform those tasks for that specific patient, as each patient is an individual and will have different needs. The test is the same way - your care plan will tell you the tasks to do.

What about lowering the bed? Not the head part, but the level of the bed. I thought it had to be set it its lowest setting after every skill?

Good video only correction I would make as an RDH is the brushing technique. Our teeth do not grow side ways the method you use that is correct is as follows place brush at 45 degrees to gum line do a gentle giggle then sweep the brush in the direction they grow. So for the top you would giggle and then seep the brush downward on the bottom you would jiggle sweep the brush upwards.

The head of the bed must be raised for safety at the beginning of the skill, but you should position it however the patient wishes after the skill is over (this is a comfort issue and part of patient''s rights). Always give them the choice.

You don't let them rinse their mouth out before you brush their teeth?
@agi2281

Don't you ask the patient about cut or sore in the mouth? Also why don't you remove gloves and wash hands before you leave bathroom placing the basin on a clean papertowel (barrier)?

shouldnt she wash hands first before pulling curtain and contaminating it?
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 8 лет назад
+Sean McNamara The curtain is dirty. It has been touched by patients and visitors with unwashed hands. It has been touched by contaminated gloves. They are rarely (usually only once per year) taken down and physically laundered. Touching the curtain after washing your hands contaminates your hands prior to patient contact. It is important to knock, address the patient by name, introduce yourself by name and title, describe your skill, obtain permission and THEN close the curtain and wash your hands. Washing your hands as soon as you enter the room is presumptuous since the patient doesn't know who you are and you haven't gotten permission to do anything. The method demonstrated in this video is correct according to current state standards. Thank you for your comment.

she never checked the gloves for holes and when she removed the gloves she did it wrong
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 7 лет назад
That is not a graded checkpoint on the exam. Hands are always washed after glove removal. So, even if there were a breech in the integrity of the glove, the procedure would be the same - wash your hands. So, this is not a graded checkpoint on the exam, and in reality it would not affect anything even if you did notice a hole. You will wash your hands regardless. Hope this helps!
