I'm old Santa Fe guy, steam buff and former longtime employee, and while ATSF's big engines also had real pretty, fascinating whistles, I've always considered PRR's chime whistles, by far, the most hauntingly beautiful and melodic. I could listen to that all day.
its, kinda scary. that whistle just reminds me of how man operated these machines. it could lead to disaster in just a blink of an eye. dahm do i love the RR
there's an engine in my story called Fenix Pacific 5883. originally she was gonna be a dash 8 but after hearing this and researching the J1 i think i found something better than a diesel
Geez Pennsylvania railroad J1's are massive locomotives imagine the PRR J1 and big boy in a strength Contest to see who's stronger and pull heavier freight trains.
Popular theory is since they weren't a PRR original design the PRR didn't bother considering any for preservation. Least that's what I heard. It'd make sense. There's rumors 1 is buried near a former PRR yard (now NS owned) but pretty sure it's a farse.
