I put a pair of Epiphone DOT pickups in my Epiphone Special GT and I love them. To my ear the guitar sounds like a Les Paul should. This is my go to guitar now. It sets up well and is easy to play.
If you put any gigging musician in a room surrounded by all the best overdrives in the world, by the end of the day….they would all be playing the Daily Driver….by itself or on all the time with any other drive you want. Shnobel Tone makes wonderful stuff. Thanks for caring so much about quality and tone…shout out from Arizona.
Wow! IMO you really made the right choice! Great editing in this video Roman. I think this because in other shootout-style videos either it's one type of pickups in all positions and then the next, so there's no way to directly compare. In other cases, the individual clips are too long so your ear becomes accustomed to the first iteration and then the second just sounds wrong.
Hi Roman,... it certainly seems that the Ibby 58's shifted the eq curve down a notch and warmed things up nicely without sacrificing note clarity and separation.... the harmonic complexity and content of the warmer mids in the 58's really are very musical and pleasant .... great choice... I have a 2006 Custom 22 with Dragon ii's and I like them more than anything Paul is making today... I certainly prefer the older earlier PRS guitars and electronics... :-) thank you for a great video and comparison !!
I always thought the low turn variants were a little too vintage sounding. Loved the clarity and extended high end, but missed the bass and low mids of 90s prs pups i was used to. Maybe swapping the alnico 2 with a stronger magnet would give me the best of both.
The Super 58 is the best PAF ever made!!LOTS of fakes out there though unfortunately. Good choice and they sound far better. The stock pups were too thin sounding. Now you have a guitar that plays, looks and sounds better than a Les Paul.
PRS pickups make you sound like you know what you are doing :-) Ibanez are great - but the presence boost comes at a price. Ibanez doesn't sound "intimate", "magic" or "thick" like the PRS. The consistency of the the individual notes are way off and sounds very "individual" without consistency nor coherency. PRS way to go!
I personally don't like the super 58's. Even in my two JSM 10 and my JSM 100. I find them to bright. Especially the high E string sounds unbearable and pops out too much. I was only able to fatten up the sound by putting on 13 Chrome flat wounds. I had an Ibanez AS200 in the late seventies with super 58 pups; but they sounded much much warmer than the new ones. Eventually I will replace them all with lower output pick ups. Especially the Neck pick up; as I play Jazz and fusion. I don't use the bridge pick at all. I think the new 58's sound shit.
