I was out cutting the grass today and had the very experience you described of having some of my long Muscadine vines grabbed by the lawnmower. It got me thinking about whether or not I could prune the vines in summer. That question led me to a Google search, which led me to your site. Based on your comments, it seems like summer pruning is fine. I’m hoping it will lead to bigger fruit as well as fewer lawnmower issues. My plan is to prune the vines soon ( hopefully on a somewhat cool day, which may be hard in Mississippi in July) and to use a hedge trimmer to do the job a little faster.

Great videos, very well done! Dallas, GA here. Found you by looking for if it's OK to prune back muscadines in summer before harvest to be able to walk through and mow grass in the rows and pick easier. I have Ison and one Albemarle which UGA says is iffy here, but it's a large, beautiful, sweet, firm berry for eating. All my vines are absolutely loaded this year. Fertilized in spring and used calcium nitrate a few weeks ago when grapes were about small marble sized. Hope my wires and posts are strong enough. I've had problems with deer and raccoons in the last few years cleaning me out seemingly overnight when things get ripe. Do you have any ideas for that? Thanks. Mike.
@KinfolkFarmofGeorgia
@KinfolkFarmofGeorgia 2 года назад
Yep, set traps now for raccoons and I bought some solar motion activated alarms to hang around my rows. I guess they work never really had a big problem with deer. But we hunt them to. I thought about getting some wind chimes to put out there. Good luck this year we are loaded to

Hey Shane- newbie here- thanks for all your excellent videos. Question: late this past Winter, I pruned all my vines for first time (first planted the spring before 8' apart) to train them to grow up our chain link fence and across top 4' both directions, keeping a spur every 4", etc. I've had lush growth this summer but no grapes! Is this normal for first year after pruning? Or should I have trimmed back the vines this summer to force growth of grapes? any guidance appreciated. Thanks again for all your great content.
@KinfolkFarmofGeorgia
@KinfolkFarmofGeorgia 11 месяцев назад
Trimming in summer want force grapes to grow. 2nd yr plants sometimes want put on. We have some Black Beauty that was 4th yr. Just depends on. The variety. Keep up the work on them and don't give up. Prune in February. Fertilize with 10 10 10 April 1st and May June and July and the 15th of those months use Calcium Nitrate. I. The spring you should see tiny clusters of little pollen sacks that will turn into your grapes. I hope you have a self fertle amongst the 2 that would help a ton. Female plants will struggle without one. Good luck and keep me posted

We probably will have 50% of the grapes we had last year. Beetles are the worst I have ever seen so maybe that is having an impact. We haven't finished bottling all the wine we put up last year, 48 gallons, so less grapes this year won't be too bad. Some of the grapes I got from Ison's this year are almost down the wire and some haven't even reached the wire. It doesn't seem to be a varietal issue other than all the Carlos plants are doing well. That's just farming.
