When we start talking about pecan trees and pruning, it is very crucial in North Carolina that
we prune our trees properly. This video shows what you need to consider when it is time to prune your trees.

This is the best video I've seen on pruning pecan trees. I appreciate the great explanations and the multiple examples as well.

What a helpful video! I’m watching from Texas. I don’t have a pecan tree farm, just one in my backyard but I want to take care of it properly. I see now I have 2 branches that need to be cut. Agree with the other commenter that the examples shown were helpful too. Thank you.

That was a great help to me! Thanks for doing that Mike and crew!!! I started a pecan tree farm about 10 years ago; hopefully I can now go prep some of my 5 year old trees for a better future.

Very helpful information and I can see how it would apply to walnut or maybe hickory. I know I have a young walnut that is very prone to the crows foot way of growing. The last pruning on the largest tree seemed very drastic and kind of ruined the appearance unfortunately. It truly is best if people just start pruning their trees when they are small. All people need to learn these things.

I got three Kiowa pecans and one Desirable, planning on starting an orchard at my great grandfather's old farm. I'm trying to learn as much as I can from these videos. I was scared to cut these young branches back thinking I would hurt the tree.

What's your rule of thumb when determining whether a branch is "competing" or not? More than 45-degree crotch angle? Taller than the leader? Starts out lateral and then turns upwards to more than 45-degrees?

I have a planted pecan tree eight years old. Is it to late to prune this? And if not how much is cut off?

I have 2 pecan trees growing from the seed in a pot and getting ready to plant themon the floor already. noticed you said in another video on "planting bare root pecan trees" that is not a good I idea to grow then from the seed. Can you plz explain what cons am I going to face and what I should do to alleviate the problem? And you also mentioned that they are cross pollinators, can you also explain that just to clarify what I "think" I know that word means? Lol plz.

anytime you plant a bare root tree you know what to expect if you plant a seed it may not be the same type that you planted do to root stock that produced that pecan or grafting as the case my be this can happen any time you plant a seed

If you make a small cut on the opposite side of the main cut it will stop the bark from peeling down the branch/ trunk.
@bpj1805
@bpj1805 Год назад
It also helps to not goof the back cut by making it too shallow or failing to ensure that its kerf edge is parallel with that of the main cut. I think the latter is what happened here, when our presenter was in an awkward position and failed to make the cut edges parallel, so there was still a triangular prism of uninterrupted wood left when the stump came down. This uncut prism is what gave way by tearing away from the rest of the wood.

I’m trying to keep my pecan tree from growing too tall. If I cut the upright central leader every year, will it keep my tree from growing too tall? I’m not trying for a high yield of pecans. I just want to keep the tree from growing too tall.
@jonathangerwitz1429
@jonathangerwitz1429 2 года назад
Lop off the top every year. Cut it shorter than you want it to be during the summer. If you want a 15' tree then cut it to 10'. It will grow vigorously in the spring.

It will always try to grow up. You will have to trim it every year.

Camera should focus more on the tree, where the pruning cuts are being made, no?

I want to start growing my pecan tree in my back yard. I want to do the pruning process exactly as you showed in the video. My question is because I’m trying to grow the pecan tree in my back yard how to I keep the tree short??? Do I can avoid problems with my Home Owners Association. I really need to keep my pecan tree short in height and in width. Thanks for the great video
@ArbitraryLifestyle

How short are we talking? Do you want to produce pecans eventually?

Look up ‘espaliers’ ... This is the practice of pruning and tying selected branches to a lateral line (pole, wire, etc,). This design is most often used with flowering fruit trees. Production is often very high and keeps tree growth at a manageable height to pick fruit. With a Pecan tree, I would guess one would need to allow plenty of lateral growth to be absorbed/contained. I’ve thought about trying this as I have a large city lot... but don’t want to shade my apple and peach tread.

Is this method good for any fruit tree?
@lindaburns7477

Some of the general principles apply, but there are significant differences between pruning a pecan and other fruit trees. For one thing, pecans are so much larger than other fruit trees so the approach is somewhat different. Peach trees, in particular, are not grown with a central leader as pecans and other fruit trees are. Dr Parker has some excellent videos on pruning peach trees on the NCSU Peach Portal (peaches.ces.ncsu.edu). There is also a very good publication on pruning fruit trees (content.ces.ncsu.edu/training-and-pruning-fruit-trees-in-north-carolina) which can help you with pruning as well. I hope that helps!
