Gotcha. With 36 machines, I'm locked into this config unless the upgrade offers a considerable increase in reliability and performance. Having a farm you have to mod all machines, and account for the mod time. I have to ask myself.... is this shiny new widget worth $2,169 and 2 weeks of labor?

Seems like the hotend is truly the Mini's Achilles heel in long-term reliability and i appreciate the light being shone on it. It is something a regular review can't properly cover, only a farmer could. Honestly i'm still attracted to getting a Mini+. Mostly cause i'm an absolute beginner that wants a small printer i can build from kit and has some wiggle-room for modding/"upgrading", but doesn't drag you down a never-ending rabbit hole. Seems like just addressing the hotend alone goes a very long way in improving it to something a printing newbie like me would call: good enough.
@3DPrintedDebris
@3DPrintedDebris Год назад
The hotend and extruder are not suited for high workload use, in my experienced opinion. Ever since making the switch the Mini rack has been an absolute polymer chucking machine. I'll do an update video on that soon.

You can swap it out for E3D's new Revo Micro very easily. Did it on my mini's a few months back and the relibility is night and day - a highly recommended, and very simple upgrade!
@Foxhood
@Foxhood Год назад
@@Rick-vm8bl I know. Now that they finally released the "ObXidian" nozzle and it is appearing to indeed outlast nearly every other nozzles to justify its pricetag, i am very much considering the Revo. Now seems like an excellent hot-end for one with just 1-2 printers that may wish to experiment with different nozzle sizes and materials including exotic wood/stone blends. As i gather. Installation is just printing one part E3D themselves posted to printables. Doubt it is a great choice for farms like 3DPrintedDebris' though. At least economically wise.

Love the comprehensive review! I am looking to mod my mini+ and would like to implement your configuration. However, my heat block is a mess. I've been using the mini+ without a sock for about a year now, so there is build-up. I do clean it every once in a while, but all I do is heat her up and scrape what I can off. Do you think that this will give me issues when installing the all-metal kit you linked? Also, I have never made any modifications to my mini+... is this mod pretty involved? Would you happen to know of any installation guides or instructions I can reference to help me get my mini+ like yours? (I wish you would've made a V6 mod install video when you were upgrading! 💛😁)

Thanks for sharing this information and your upgrades. I have printed your R4 Extruder but am running into a small issue. The parts fan hits the extruder-body chain part when the X-axis is all the way to the right. Did you also run into this on your machines?
@3DPrintedDebris
@3DPrintedDebris 2 года назад
It's a tight fit, and the layer fan does have some rotational play in it. The fan has to be perfectly seated, there can't be any X skew in the rods, and the harness needs to be tightly zip tied.

Thanks for great review. Experience of someone with this amount of printing time on multiple machines is extremely valuable. When I bought MINI+ I was looking for something that would print PLA without any effort on my part and probably print Nylon in enclosure without burning my house down maybe 2 times a month. First part seems to be true. Second part I still have to validate.

I won't be adding any more minis to my army. The mod expense and time commit to mods puts it on par with a unmodified MK3S in terms of cost. The only real benefit I can see is the power consumption. 75W running is pretty impressive.

Thanks for the video! With the upgraded hotend fixing the issue that ultimately led to the stock extruder failure, did you find that the stock extruder setup is inferior to the mk3s style mod? Asking b/c some say the 3-1 geared stock extruder produces a cleaner final print.
@3DPrintedDebris
@3DPrintedDebris 2 года назад
Asked and answered in the video (mechanical failure). It's been around 8 months since I made this, and not one extruder failure attributed to design, and print quality is on par with a Prusa MK3S. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, I am beholden to my now millions of hours of print experience.
@eighties8
@eighties8 2 года назад
@@3DPrintedDebris Hey, thanks for the explanation. My take on the explanation in the video was that your extrusion failure was caused by the faulty heat brake design, not faulty extruder design. I didn't get in the video where you indicated the advantage of modding the extrusion to dual drive mk3s design vs the 3-1 gearing that original mini and bondtech assemblies use. Just asking to educate myself, not to question your judgment.
@3DPrintedDebris
@3DPrintedDebris 2 года назад
@@eighties8 With no escape path for filament debris on the stock extruder, any obstruction at the nozzle will grind filament and ruin that bearing I speak to regardless of the hotend in use. Bed level too low, curling overhangs, or the occasional clogged nozzle all impose resistance to the extruder gear. I have found the dual gear to be more tolerant (pushing through the resistance) vice the single gear slip and grind. Any debris encountered on the MK3S extruder just falls out of the opening in the casing as well.

I've got the Mini+ and, in spite of the + in the branding, Prusa did not make any necessary upgrades to this piece of shit printer. Have experienced the clicking during extrusion mentioned in the video, despite doing constant maintenance on the printer. I understand now why Prusa has steadfastly refused to expand their operations out of the Czech Republic: because it reduces their lawsuit liability over people they've burned with this garbage printer.
@3DPrintedDebris
@3DPrintedDebris 2 года назад
Personally, I think they hit the rocks with the aggressive marketing combined with the price point. Mini users, from what I have observed, are beginners. At this price point, even with Prusa's history and R&D, it's missing those features and mechanical aspects the beginner user is going to need to keep it running. I'm super pissed they marketed it as a "farm" machine, when the downtime/maintenance required as shipped clearly disqualify it for farm use. This is why I ultimately scrapped the hotend and extruder, and rolled in the E3D V6 and MK3S+ parts I know meet my reliability requirements. Bottom line, I couldn't make my required margins with the increased maintenance cost of the Mini as shipped.

@@3DPrintedDebris Right, I bought it specifically because of Prusa's reputation in the industry. It doesn't feel like a $400 printer--more like a $200 printer. I'm glad I found your video, though, because it confirms I'm not just going crazy and this machine has some fundamental flaws. I've been debating doing a v6 hotend upgrade and extruder upgrade but it feels like throwing good money after bad. I've also got an Artillery Genius Pro from a giveaway and that's actually performed better than the Mini, but the non-removable glass bed is so terrible. Fulament makes an aluminum bed system for it, but it's like $200. Feels like more 'good money after bad' to fix it.

@@theglowcloud2215 I can say with confidence the mods I've made are effective, and the 36 minis I have are performing to my satisfaction in terms of reliability and quality. I have about 8 months of performance data, and these fixes turn the mini into the workhorse it was supposed to be.

@@3DPrintedDebris I ordered a Bondtech IFS extruder for my Mini, after some amount of agonizing over the decision, but haven't settled on a hotend yet. I've been looking at the Phaetus Dragon, the regular old E3D v6, and the Slice Mosquito. I then realized the Dragon is a clone of the Mosquito and Slice has been trying to get it pulled off the market for patent infringement. The v6 is much cheaper than the Mosquito, though, so that may be the obvious choice.

Unless you are willng to upgrade the extruder and fiddle with the hotend constantly I would not recommend the Mini for a first printer, look elsewhere unless you like torture

I would tend to agree with you. I had to invest about $4,000 into my 36 to get them performing on par with the MK3S+. I was super pissed to find out the "MINDA" was doped incorrectly, and they sold me an upgrade months later vs. releasing it with good parts to begin with.

I have mine as first printer for about a year and didn't have a single issue yet, so kinda the opposite of torture. Then again I don't use it all day every day, so not comparable to the experience of a print farm scenario. Good to know what to look out for in the future. Nonetheless I wouldn't recommend it either right now simply because the kit costs more than my preassembled Mini + 1kg filament back then. There wasn't even a kit option when I bought it. Not sure whether this is a permanent price or it's just because of shortages.

@@SaHaRaSquad I found they really didn't start becoming a maintenance burden until I scaled past the 4 trial machines.

@andrius anryy It was very sensitive to external temperature variation. 20F was enough to take the range out of the needed first layer height. To make matters worse, there is a 0-2.0mm limit set in software.
