With the PS5 receiving a new update (currently in Beta at time of writing) one of the biggest and most requested features that has now finally been enabled is the M.2 NVMe SSD upgrade slot. It's been more than half a year since the launch of the PS5 and one of the biggest complaints from users (aside from stock levels being painfully low) is that the storage available in the default model is rather small. This new update and the ability to add additional storage has been met with mixed responses, as it has now become clear to many SSD buyers that the type of storage required for PS5 is much more advanced in architecture than the SATA hard drives and SSDs of previous generations. This, combined with an increased understanding on subjects like PCIe connectivity, Heatsinks and wrapping their heads why this new SSD tech is more expensive has certainly led to a fair share of raised voices! I have already discussed why I think PS5 using PCIe Gen 4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSDs is a very good thing previously, but today I want to help you choose the right SSD for your PS5.

How could you not.. we all experience loading times for like ever! It all get worser and worser over the years, the tech is a true revolution in our systems, finally not half of the cpu and memory speed get wasted on waiting on the HDD to move its arm, wait for the disc to be in position and read 4 bytes.. and then move the arm to another location, wait, wait, wait and finally load a bit of more data.. Ssd’s be like just ask me the data you want😎 then it will keep throwing the data you asked for without any delay, their might be some useless data loaded because ssd’s read complete blocks of data instead of a small part you actually needed.. this results in loading big blocks for a lot of small files, which can be solved by ordering the files the right way..

@@tonilaficara you can solder one directly to the motherboard! No ofc not.. The only way I see is a sata to m.2 drive conversion, but speeds would not be optimal and any other ssd will be faster them the crap HDD the ps4 (pro) runs at.

Love the channel man!! Thank you for your SSD and heatsink guides. After watching your videos, I begrudgingly went with the WD Black SN850, even though I was really tempted by the Sabrent Rocket 4 and that chonky heatsink, instead I rather went with the MHQJRH 2280 heatsink, as it looks like a good all around heatsink with a solid build quality.

There are so many videos on RU-vid about this subject, but you are the first person to definitely say yes use a heatsink on your SSD. I don't have a PS5, but I do use a M.2 drive for my PC. I did buy a full enclosure heatsink for my SSD, but I haven't used it because people go back and forth about heatsinks. It's either yes use one, or no don't use one, or even just only use a heatsink on the controller chip only. After watching this I'm going to install my full enclosure heatsink on my SSD and enjoy the benefits of the improved temps.

Another excellent video, NAS. The question I would still like answered is are the NVMe models that come with a heatsink going to both fit inside the PS5 and be sufficient to cool those drives OR do you still recommend buying on separately? I’ve got my eye on Seagate’s Firecuda with Heatsink and I certainly hope that’s good enough because it seems to smash every other metric that matters.

I’m going to start calling you the SSD Guru. I mean I thought I studied SSDs & storage a lot. LOL!! You take the cake my dude. I do feel bad for those people who do not buy Heatsinks. I figure it should be a no brainer. But I forget that some people don’t take apart & build PCs or repair consoles like myself. But for the PC people most Motherboards come with SSD heatsinks already attached to them. For people with a PS5 that want to upgrade, please listen to him. Not only will your performance suffer & throttle. But you can also do damage to your SSD shortening it’s lifespan/endurance. Keep up the great work. Love the vids.✌🏻

Very helpful information, thanks. Which direction does the air flow over the nvme in the ps5? Seems the fins would work best in the correct direction. Someone could make a plate that would fit over the larger heat sink if it works better with the plate.

Sony's head of thermal design for PS5 said to keep the ssd bay cover on because of the two vents that help the fan remove hot air via negative pressure. Their chief engineer is definitely more of an authority on this issue than you. Please buy a heatsink that allows the cover to be screwed back on and disregard what this guy said. Edit: guy

You, for whatever reason, believe Sony didn't test this and you're going to disregard the advice from someone that was intricately involved in PS5's thermal design because armchair engineering degree? Also would the heat from the heatsink not potentially damage the removable shell, which was also mentioned by Otori-san. Can't wait for the assholes that do this and then rant on the internet about how Sony didn't make it clear enough after something that's easily avoidable happens.

What you're saying is very correct I do own a high-end gaming computer with two m.2 nvme drives. Samsung Evo 970 Plus I also have a Western digital black nvme me both run between mid-thirties to forty degrees Celsius under load. If the nand or the memory controllers get hot then the read and write speeds do decrease in performance great informative video 👍🏽. They actually make some heat sinks with a built-in fan definitely recommend it the only thing would be trying to figure out a custom solution to power it. Maybe a BEC step down to 6 or 12 volts from the power supply

Is there any difference between heat spreader and heat sink ? Some SSDs like XPG s70 blade uses head spreader and not heat sink. Wondering if those heat spreaders are sufficient enough for cooling ?

One of my friends keeps telling me that I don’t need a heat sink and it’s stupid for me to get one because he’s telling me I need a fan to keep them cool… so the question is do I need a fan pointing directly at my PS5 to keep the heat sink cool ???

Great video mate. I have a couple of Samsung 970 Pros for my PC. One is beneath the built in heatsink on the motherboard, the other I fitted a heatsink to. For what these drives cost and what a heatsink costs, you’d be crazy not to get a heatsink! I’ll be going with a Samsung 980 Pro with a heatsink for my PS5, but I’ll be waiting until more games are available.

A word of caution about the MHQJRH heatsink. I have installed this heatsink on a Firecuda 530 in my PS5, and it almost completely blocks the 2 exhaust vents on the side of the drive bay. If you use this heatsink you may want to leave the cover off or drill some holes in the cover to allow the hot air to escape.

PS5 engineer says otherwise QUOTE(from PS5 Sony Engineer) Mr Otori: There are two exhaust holes for the SSD slot for expansion. Since the expansion slot is near the intake fan, it has a structure that sucks heat from the exhaust hole with negative pressure. The plate is ther for a reason

I wouldn’t risk using a heat sink that wouldn’t properly fit in the bay. There is a reason why Sony stated the drive with a heat sink must not exceed a certain size.

You said you have ordered the heat sink model. So it should be fully assembled with the heat sink attached. Remember the heat sink usually surrounds the nvme drive. So for you it should be pug play and enjoy.

Also worth noting to update the firmware on your SSDs. The firmware on this 980 pro is 1Bxxxx and it's really old because it was updated to 2Bxxxxx around December last year and current version is 3B2QGXA7.

dont ever remove the copper label of your ssd. it also acts as a little heatsink.

My ssd came with a small heatsink. It doesn't use rubber bands just sticks on top. Is that okay? If not, how do you take the ssd out? Do you just take it out and it won't be corrupted?

just get the water cooled heatsink and make your own costum cooling build for your ssd. But You either have to drill holes in the cover or just don't use the cover :D

I bought the sn850 1tb and put my own heatsink on it the black one that everyone gets for it. And when playing ghost of tsushima legends the tempatures read 130 Fahrenheit and my character froze for 10 seconds and sound was cutting out I don't know if this was do to bad connection to legends or if it was getting way to hot because this is the first time this happened also my ps5 fans are very quit I must have got the good quit fans but the ps5 does get hot. Is this normal?

@@CH-bn7qb it states in Sony’s own site that outlines what the m.2 nvme drive must be in order to work.. it must not exceed 2.25 mm beneath and 8mm above. I’m sure the plate does play a part in the cooling of the bay.. while the person in the video does do a good service by stressing on how important a heatsink is, I think he is wrong to suggest using a heatsink that wouldn’t fit.

i have SSD 970 evo Plus 1TB gen 3 at normal is 42 c and after pass 300 MB/sec transfer rate start to heat up to 52 c and when you download a game it goes to 59, i have order a heatshink and wait to get my order

I get the “ps5 is too hot” prompt every once in awhile. My room is kinda hot. Would this help it regulate its internal temperature better?

Its weird how we need them for gen4 when people always said on PC with gen3 that they were pointless. I wish the new Sabrant cover heatsink was already out. Just found a great deal on a 980pro 1tb but need a heatsink of course.
