Thank you for that explanation. Also, love German Shepherds and have had several. Now awaiting my Belgian Malinios puppy. Loved the scenery and your dogs….. being happy dogs..
For sure the information is helpful if not only to enlighten those of us who will never participate in the sports with our dogs. I just enjoyed watching your dogs enjoy their off leash freedom in nature! Beautiful scenery...
I dont think PSA or IGP is better then the other. They are simply different and ask for completely different things from the dog and handler. Both have their ups and down.
Very interesting knowledge of the nuances. I think a stable dog is the number one quality to look for. You can’t take an unstable dog anywhere. Therefore they won’t be protecting anyone. Also ruin your whole life!
Yea I'm more interested in knowing which is genetically the strongest or overall best dog on the field. I hardly care who the best trainer is. I think this was the original goal of IGP and it has been pretty close to lost unfortunately. I wonder if PSA + some FH titles is the way to go
Great explanation of the differences between the two(2) disciplines. As well I think you qualified the points that some Snowflakes would criticize your generalities mentioned as specific and just not get it. Those individuals will always be out there. You qualified your position very well. Great job. Thanks Ron
Where do I start!! I want to spend time with my pups and have teachable moments the will pay off later on! Where do I start with my pups? Love your videos and education Thank you!
Hey Haas, are you still taking Deposits for the Q litter? I have a client that is really interested an I referred them to you cause you produce good dogs and you know what you are doing.
Personally I like PSA much better for a few reasons but the biggest things are the suit vs the arm sleeve, meaning I like to see the dog target the “bad guy” and not so much trying to get his toy, the bite sleeve. And another thing I’m not a fan of is watching dogs track, omg can anything be more boring to watch. I’m not trying to take anything away from a good tracking dog but gee’s Louis it’s so not fun to watch.
Find yourself a really good SAR group, especially a wilderness SAR unit. It will totally change your mind as to how “boring” tracking is. I know a former Officer who not only trained urban and wilderness SAR, but also had her dog trained in cadaver dog and water cadaver dog. He could find someone who had drowned in a lake or river. Tracking at those high levels will blow your mind.
I think eventing is a better comparison. It's a 3 part sport - cross country, dressage, and show jumping.....and the riders are all a certain level of crazy and if you are just getting into horses and see one described as a perfect eventing candidate....run.
IGP is fantastic but there is a lack of understanding for the crowd how you get 97 instead of 99. For sport i would go Mondio Ring or Nose sports (this is pretty new and really high standards)for somehow realism and handling and for actual competing Agility
I would love to do IGP but my dog works as a detection dog and the tracking style required of IGP is completely unrealistic compared to real detection work. My dog also is in public a lot and I worry that introducing the protection scenarios would possibly make him a bit hypervigilant while out and about. Does anyone have experience or ability to speak as to the effects of this type of sport on your dog's work? I understand it is a "game" to some but I feel as if my individual dog might take it too seriously for him to think it is just a game, which makes me hesitant to go down this avenue.
I've wondered this question for a long time as well and so far this is the information I've learned: Dogs are incredibly situational, but I think it comes down to the ability of the dog and what your priorities are/what you're willing to risk. Some people make sure to work their dogs only in prey and never tap into defensive drive, but lots of trainers think a dog only worked in prey won't go very far in IGP. No doubt some dogs have the temperament and drive to do both detection work and IGP (I've met several!) but it's important to consider your priorities and be okay with choosing one thing over the other at the end of the day. If you pursue IGP and notice it compromises his detection work, you have to ask yourself if that's a risk you're willing to take!
I think if you complaint the ijp then do the other one but if you are comfortable with the jip stay their untill you think you and your dog is ready I don't know any think about this at all but that my comment
I’m pretty new to IGP about a year in, with my dog who is about a year old lol no titles. in the last year I’ve watched so many IGP vids and they’re cool but one thing I can confidently say…. PSA is waaay more interesting to watch for the average person. It’s got the popcorn factor lol. I watched the nationals for PSA and it was entertaining as hell. They definitely win that battle. Though don’t know if anyone cares about the spectators of dog sports lol 😂
Oh heck at a year in you are just getting started!!!! Your dog is still growing and developing. It is too young to be doing any jumping (for obedience). And it is still growing into its body, learning how to control his physical self much less his emotional self. I have been lucky to know several dogs who have done IGP (and Sch/IPO). It takes years to develop that relationship as well as the actual exercises. Hang in there. It will be a very fun ride!!
Cool video, @ShieldK9DogTraining you offer in class puupy training? Have a 13 week old Coonhound pretty good dog so far but his nose is nutty and would love knowledge on a recall from a trainer like you who's worked with so many dogs. I'm telling you this little hound can smell.
Psa,,was started by guys who could not complete a shutzhund trial. The founder, was caught cheating, with a flat collar, with hidden spikes ,within the first 5 trials.no tracking, no retrieves, no high levels of obedience. Shutzhund is a trainers sport.that evaluates dogs. Psa,, Is frantic,,acting on the part of the decoys. Very low stress other than noises. No real stress. No finesse in the excercises. No guarantee, so no rules. Seemingly, LOTS OF FIXED TRIALS.
I've heard this from many people now, and agree with all your points. I also find it interesting that dogs are only supposed to get a PSA1- most dogs are supposed to stop there. There are a lot of shenanigans at the higher levels. The supposed "stress" and pressure are actually minimal, mostly stuff like water in the face and yelling, but not a lot of real pressure.
Is the answer KNPV? 😊 I'd go with whichever you are willing to do, the dog has the proper genetic predispotion for and just go enjoy yourselves. Lose and laugh is my moto...better than winning and stressing on details
I've heard it said IGP is more a test of the trainer than the dog, and that weak dogs with great trainers often title. I've never competed or even trained in either, but I'd be curious to hear from people who've done both.
You can't title a dog that doesn't have the drive to do the work no matter how good the trainer, it's like asking, which came first the chicken or the egg.
I've been wondering what age should you start PSA? I'm planning on getting a Malinois puppy in a few years for PSA and wanted to know when I should start.
How about a Real World question: How functional are those sports? As what said in another comment NVBK and KNPV blow all of these away and are far more FUNCTIONAL.
@@diang1984 IGP is also supposed to be tool for selecting dogs, but at the end of the day, its all sports... IGP, PSA, anything-ring, knpv, nvbk. You need to learn about lines with defensive and agressive dogs. One thing i came to realized is that sport people dont like defensive dogs, these dogs dont perform so well in sports, but i like them to work as a guard dog(the type of dog that works ALONE, not being 24/4 handled by his owner).
From the video it would depend on you id personally start with IGP as a beginner getting into bite sports from everything he explains IGP is more predictable and sounds like a better option for a beginner unless you feel you can handle the sporadicness of PSA since it has no predictability then go for it! I originally drew towards PSA more before looking into more just seeing videos online but IGP I feel like would suit me more.
Haz, most of the PSA dogs would fail the test you do when you go to import/pick dogs. Most of the PSA 3 dogs fail if they’re not on their own field with their own decoys.
It is a sport, not real life. Like circus. Your dog does the tricks on the field. That is all, folks. It is just show and tell. There are trainers that make the dog look good and there are dogs that make the trainers look good.
I hate to make multiple posts. But in my opinion, the best dog that ever lived is Max van Tiekerhook. Koos had to work with him and almost gave up on him because he was so drivey and took things personally. He was patient and won titles. He wasn't handler hard, but was hard as granite. And Koos has been quiet and had great dogs after Max and never hyped them up. He's a master, and recognizes talent in dogs without trying. Last time I heard from him, he was messing around with Pike sons. But big Pike, little Pike, if you know, you know lol.
IGP is all constant fine-tuning. All these new acronyms drive me crazy. Does anyone else find it absolutely ironic and just plain CRAZY, that Herm Sprenger collars are made in Germany, but, not able to be used there? What is going on with dog training in Europe ???? Pretty soon they will ban leashes!!! Apparently, Snowflakes don't just exist in America 🤔☹
PSA 3 "Yeah, 3 guys are screaming at you, but you can't bite them." PSA produces mostly weak dogs with high prey drive. You'd have to almost tear a tough dog down to get him to allow the disrespect of the decoys. It suits a weak dog who doesn't take things personally. Just like French Ring. NVBK and KNPV are the best 2 programs. Less training, more testing the dog.
I couldn’t disagree more. “Weak dogs with high prey drive” wtf are you smoking. I love the nation we live in , whenever I read/hear a ridiculous comment whether it be political or not. I think about all the young men that died (some very brutally and painfully) and left there wives/mothers and own children fatherless. All that sacrifice, pain and blood so we in the here and now can voice our opinions on all topics political and otherwise, no matter how ridiculous and nefarious they may be. As long as it’s done without violence, of course 😅. 🙏God bless you ✌️
@@joeyprince2910 I've seen a few PSA dogs I really liked. Ricardo is one of my favorite dogs that ever lived. But most are boringly average Malinois. If you experience says otherwise, that's great. Speaking of sacrifices, what sacrifices have you made? What division were you in?
Neither. PSA asks unrealistic crap. IGP doesn't test the dog. Both mainly test the handler. I'll blindly take a Dutch or Belgian dog, GSD or Malinois, before I'll take a pup from a IGP or PSA 3 champ. 🙃
