Yes I agree with everything you said and I might add the people are not receptive to new people. A couple of people that train with me went to the WDA’s this year and the first thing they said, these people are arrogant and rude.
@@mikestogsdill7353 I hate to agree with that, but it is so true. I have been into SchH since 1993 or so and the one complaint I always hear from the new people is that IGP people are not very welcoming to them. - Tracey
I knew exactly what the reason was as soon as I saw the title. It's getting more and more difficult. Even Outside of Sport dogs 80% of pet dogs are out control because no one is allowed to correct a dog anymore
It’s actually because of the woke liberal morons who hate everything and will go to war to make their way the way even when they are 5% of the population or less. They are the loudest and they are backed by the mainstream media and corporate owned politicians.
I tried to explain “pressure” to someone equating it to a Mama dog correcting their puppy. Puppy behaves, Mama stops the corrections. You’d have thought I was explaining the theory of relativity😂. So I demoed it with my dog- a little collar pop, she stopped and I rewarded. That evolved into almost an hour conversation and multiple demonstrations. But I was able to get them to understand.
Funny , I took all 3 of my dogs ( 2 Large) and one Malinois to the vet, They behaved quite well , I took their leashes off as we waited for our turn . Any how! Upon leaving ( leashes on ) as I was paying my 650.00 bucks ! I had to correct with ecollar I was immediately told off by an old mean lady and stared at by almost all in the darn room! lol
So right, problem is, here in Belgium most people in working dog sport are over 55 and not so much into social media. Not enough young guys in the sport.
From Germany: yes this is correct. The leaders of German SV and IGP training clubs do not understand Lobby work at all. They are professional in their training competences but they have low expertise in lobby work. In addition, whenever IGP is shown in social media, it mainly showcases the biting part, which is then perceived as „dangerous“ / „aggressive“, and that reduces IGP to biting dogs - as a perception. - If the obedience part would stand out more in public, the perception would be more positive I guess. Also a phenomenom is that most of the SV / IGP people are less visible in public than pet dog owners. If all these well trained dogs would be visible 3x a day in citys or forests on daily walks, the perception would change. So it is correct, that unfortunately, these well trained dogs and their owners live a bit in the hidden. In addition, German Shepards and these SV Clubs have a dated image. A shame.
Part of the problem (I believe) is that it appears they are trying to completely phase out police dogs as well. A sad situation all around. Glad you are speaking out!
@@1packatak and this shows where the failure is in modern pet dog ownership…so few owners are willing to even train dogs in the Absolute Basics, let alone anything more interesting for themselves or their dog!
There's actually quite a few trained dogs that fill shelters (at least in the US), but that's usually because of their owners being unable to care for them (getting too old, suddenly dying, financial changes, etc.). But they aren't usually puppies or young dogs, they're 4+ years dogs. It's actually interesting looking at the shelter statistics and seeing why dogs end up in shelters, but it's usually something wrong with the human than the animal
My current narcotics detection dog has helped save numerous lives within our jail by helping eradicate dangerous contraband. My K9 was a mondioring dog that was specifically bred for Mondioring but thanks to the genetics and the sport community he has become great detection dog. "Sport dogs save lives"
Totally agree 100% with what you’re saying. You don’t find IGP dogs in the shelters & rescues … especially those they call aggressive, which are probably just not trained. For example, Kevin would not have faired well with positive reinforcement … he needed a decent training to connect with him to show what is and is not acceptable behaviour. When he left your facility he was manageable and not a danger to society. Frankly all dogs should undergo the training at the obedience level that you do there, so they don’t end up in dog shelters or rescues … or become a danger to society. I agree not all breeds are suitable for IGP … but I would think all breeds are suitable for the obedience level of your training.
As far as Malinois', you never know what you'll find in a shelter, pure breed rescue or on a rehoming site, in my almost one year of looking I have seen almost everything. I'm training my shelter Malinois for her French Ring Brevet, she has the drive.
This tickles me the right way, we need to get this out in the public! When I needed more expertise for my reactive GSD, I finally started looking into IGP and real dog training. (Watching Haz religiously) Now people are always surprised to see my GSD being friendly and focused on me, no attention for other dogs. Society isn't used to seeing these working breeds anymore! The true character of these dogs and what they are made for. Goose is my favorite topic to talk about nowadays and I never thought to be this confident of a person, but my GSD showed me how to be a confident leader, instead of an anxious leader. As a 25 yo female I dream of a better world for dogs. Equal treatment for breeds and their sport. And for the people thinking they will stop a real biting dog with a sausage, I applaud their confidence!
I'm Spanish, here they've already banned crates, e-collars, prong collars, and off leash dogs.... I have a 6mo Malinois, I'm training her to be neutral to other dogs and the thing is that most ppl here have little fluffy untrained dogs on harneses and letting the dog decide where they are going.. And all of em look at me like I'm mentally ill for tryng to keep my dog at least 3-4 feet away of any other dog, I only let her meet trained dogs from friends so we can hang out together. And all of em get amazed when I tell my puppy "Couché!" and she lays down like its efin magic, ppl is lazy and stupid ngl
Right on, it's heart breaking I havent had a chance to enjoy IGP and its gonna die before I get my dog. Robert Cabral is one of the few standing up for us and more people need to take part in the fight
Thank you for continuing to bring to the forefront the problems that the animal rights activists are causing. It is such a small minority of people, and they are ruining it for everyone. I want to add that only dogs who can’t handle pressure bite indiscriminately!
Never knew IGP existed until watching you. Now i love seeing your results. I know i'll never be at that level but your videos have gotten my dog off leash and she is loving the freedom. Never in my wildest dreams did i think i could walk 3 miles through the woods off leash with my dog. Thank you. Horrible to see whats happening in Europe and abroad . Love to see you sit down with Ivan and talk dogs and igp.
Great call to action. Love how passionate you are about this. Imo there is still too much defense being played whilst the force free have been playing aggressive offense. There needs to be documenting and showcasing what THEIR methods do to dogs and breeding. Putting it out there in the form of documentaries how THEIR training gets many dogs euthanized. Have owners who drank the Kool-aid and then saw the flaws and dangers of the R+, recount their experiences. Break the illusion they have created of them being "the protector of the furry angels." Start lobbying the way they have been doing, and so on.
“If you don’t tell your story, someone else will”. Oh you’re so right on the money with that statement Haz! Fight for your passion and continue to use your voice and action to protect this unique sport.
I love that you show your sport and share your passion. Until I found Shield K9, I didn't even know IGP existed and now I can't wait until new videos of your dogs competing are released. The dogs are impressive, the training is impressive, and the sport is impressive. As a person who was involved with reptiles, I know exactly how you feel. Animal Rights Activists have been coming at reptiles for 20+ years, trying to ban all of our beloved pets and our shows. I consider those folks Animal Rights Terrorists because they truly have no idea what is good for the animals, just what's good for themselves. Keep doing what you're doing as I think you're on the right path. I will continue to support!
Same. A year ago I didn’t know IGP existed or anything. I then got a GSD (a puppy) so was looking for good training videos and came across Shield K9. I’ve learned so much and I have a better trained dog for it.
As someone who’s pretty new to the sport and live in a country where IGP is barely legal (Norway) I am scared that all the work I am putting into my 1 year old is something I won’t be able to show even next year or the next. Truly devastating that people who have no clue what they are talking about gets to make these choices. Just talking with people and they asking me what we do, they automatically assume I am training my dog to be an attack dog and that he’s dangerous. We, who train IGP need to spread correct information about the sport! Talk about it with anyone who’ll listen
💯 % agree. Keep up your good work. It’s inspiring to a non-competitive dog owner to get out and do basic obedience training and treeing work with my sporty running hound type dog. Dogs like people like having purpose.
When they watered it down so much and changed the rules so much as to make it so easy that any pet dog can do it now, it's dying because of that. And Haz, you're spot on with what you've said. It's because the leadership has appeased the masses by doing these rule changes. When they stop doing that, IGP will survive. Until then, it's done. And is why people in America are leaving IGP and going to other complex dog sports such as Ringsport, PSA, etc.
A problem in getting a wider exposure of IGP is that there are simply not that many opportunities to learn how to train. As far as I have been able to find out there is only one training club in my area and it has no openings for new handlers to join.
Admire your public speaking as much as your training. They've been watering down Schutzhund for years. Changing the name, going from reed stick to padded stick, trying to eliminate the long bite. Trying to eliminate defensive drive and work the dog in prey only. Police dogs used to compete in Schutzhund. Now people will say that dog is too aggressive or serious for the sport. Well, tape your tennis balls to the sleeve and bring out your Golden Retrievers.
Its sad because I feel like with social media now the sport is set to really start taking off. I’m currently training my first IGP dog, can’t wait to get my BH then my IGP 1. I love having something to work towards
Exactly. Dealing with shelter surrenders, abandoned and or abused working breeds from backyard breeders or people who got dogs simply based on the look of power with no commitment or knowledge, and mishandled them, having IGP-level type obedience and tracking and even “protection” with toy control at a minimum is essential to getting these rehab dogs to be able to function and maintain their animal mental health in the human society that basically made them (rehab cases that is). I choose Mals and GSDs, Dobies, Hovawarts etc any day. We need these dogs in real world applications and specialized jobs to protect human beings from other human beings, or from animals, etc. Plus dog sports are still team sports, and who doesn’t love team sports? Or love working with a canine partner that loves the sport too? Summer Olympics are cherished worldwide, equestrian eventing is a very interesting sport, this is no different. Maybe they should look at the role of rollkur or effects of girth placement in dressage instead of whether dogs should participate in a controlled aggression sport that aims to ensure propagation of stable minded and physically sound dogs in breeding programs. Great video!
I'm 20 years old and about to get my first certificate soon in 2 weeks. As a young guy who loves dogs training. There's barely anything related to dog sports here. The only way I found out about it was from Instagram. Doesn't help that I live in Puerto Rico but we're pretty much state 51 😭🤣
Very good video. Excellent presentation. So much has changed since I was first introduced to Schutzhund while I was stationed in Germany back in 1973. The wackos are on an unrelenting mission to abolish the dog sports that many of us enjoy, unfortunately.
Very nice video. Thanks for this. I have two Malinois my 2 yo is trained to IGP he has his level 1. My younger dog 10 months old I switched to French Ring. I fully feel your frustration as I love all dog sports.
Oh yeah, remember the AR people got a lot of protection videos purged off youtube some years back (during the GSD forum days this happened). We talked about their negative influence on media platforms. Then FB cracked down on selling animals. I disagree with AR people, for sure, but strategically they were thinking ahead when they bought up shares of media companies so they could control policies. 100% the AR people are a BIG problem, but there are grassroots problems with IGP as well. It has a bad reputation of being elitist and "snobby" while PSA is growing by leaps and bounds. I think PSA and Ring sports will grow in popularity because they don't require tracking, the time involved and access to fields to practice tracking is a problem. Many farmers won't allow it because they are worried about liability and law suits. IGP has an article search option, StP, perhaps that should be offered as more common alternative, especially to those who live in more urban areas. Just some thoughts, but it is good that you are sounding the alarm on the whole.
This is excellent!!! Thank u for speaking the truth. Thank u for standing on your convictions & principles. More people need to speak out. I believe that’s why the American Schuetzen was formed !
Did a Facebook post on my page and included a petition you can sign to stop this getting banned in South Australia, as well as a video of dog trainer Robert Cabral discussing this as well. Please sign this if you are passionate about fighting for this sport. Thanks heaps. You go Haz. Loving all your courses. Worth every cent!!
the sport dogs are at a much higher level than police dogs. the sport dogs provide trickle down benefits to the military and police. the Schutzhund dogs are among the happiest and well adjusted (doing what they enjoy and fulfilling their genetic potential)
There is a larger problem that is often overlooked. There are 325 million people in this country. Only a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of U.S. citizens are participating in this sport. A word of mouth campaign with each active participant reaching out to 100 people will still be a fraction of one percent of the population. More needs to be done in congressional outreach to protect dog sport as an additional source of dogs for law enforcement. Domestic production becomes more and more important with human and animal endemics, as well as natural disasters, global political instability, and socioeconomic impacts on importing dogs.
I agree 110% with you. The powers to be, and the top influencers need to push back on the naysayers 10 times harder. The naysayers don’t like the hard push back.
Everyone please like the video so we can get it spread. We are fighting against the ban here in Australia but there are so many brain washed fools it's like talking to a brick wall!
From a Pet dog trainer from France: Oh gosh where do I start... First sorry for my poor writing skills... I was taught this Job by competitors, IGP, and obedience, my teachers agree with this and continue to promote dog sport and education over legislation... But it's so far gone now, and 99% of pet dog owner just don't care about it, for theme working dog should not exist too, only slow and soft dogs, the ones that give "force free/positive only training" the ability to be "legit" because they changed the game, they chose super easy and most of the time barely breed dogs to show that their technique work! It's all a giant scam and people are loving this because it's so positive, so cute etc.... It's really hard to make it as a trainer for pet dogs, some of the force free community are violent with anyone who disagrees with them. Some other trainers I know and respect in France have been assaulted, physically or their working place was trashed, canceled on social media, banned from radio stations where they had some "podcast".... i've posted this vidéo on social media in groups that are about dog training, over 2 500 people can see that... 3 people cared enough to answer. I live in a place where there is not a single k9 club who does bitework, i have to drive over 500km to find a good one! the few clubs arround me with some bitework are not competent enough most. It's a scary time for common sense, and for dogs, and people just donc care about it. i could tell you more and more about dogs in France, i can talk about it for days, and it's getting worse every day...
I think we also need to talk about the inconsistency in judging. Those titles loose value when small clubs find a judge to work with them and award titles to dogs/handlers that arguably should not have gotten them. The helper putting no pressure on these dogs, and lack of focus in obedience. I was so repulsed by one trial that I watched, that I am tempted to switch to American Schutzhund. Bonus: it doesn’t fall under the control of Europe.
EVERYBODY needs to see this and understand the importance of dog sports, the importance = NOT how it makes you feel personally... leave your personal emotions at home.
But the problem it's precisely rooted in the fact that in this day and age pressure and stress is being portrayed as something that needs to be completely ruled out, and we only need to take a look to the way that kids are raised now, everything has to be mild, soft, sugarcoated, to show the kids a fantastic world that doesn't really exist, they fall apart even when the slightest setback comes into play, and all this bunch of "modern" psichologists and educators have to say to justify themselves is that reprimands (let alone punishment) are outdated and old school and shouldn't be applied anymore even when are needed sometimes, because "there are better ways, bla, bla, bla", and don't say that we should try to apply better ways, but there are instances when it's not possible. And with dogs it's pretty much the same, since these morons have come into play everything but giving the dogs hot dogs, praise, etc needs to be eliminated, the dog needs to dwell in a world where there are no boundsries, where everything is perfect and there are no consequences even when their dogs are messing up and misbehaving and any idiot thinks to have the right to scold you when you are correcting the dog because they see abuse in everything. But what are you gonna do, cry babies and woke culture in on command, we better brace ourselves!
You are very right some people should not have a dig to begin that that has nothing to do with the training for Schutz Hund people that are truly training there dogs caring more about their dogs and make them safe then if they just keep a dog and do nothing with them that is in my eyes make dogs that are unpredictable and dangerous and unhappy!!!!!
Almost impossible to find a IGP club in United Kingdom. They don't reply back, they seem like relics, branch secretaries don't reply. As a young corso owner trying to do IGP1 without a community it's certainly difficult and seems near impossible now.
lol, Cheryl , My Malinois has been attacked by tiny dogs 6 times now!! They just run out of every where ! And to top it off usually there is some lady screaming “ my dog is getting attacked “🤷🏻♀️😊 on leash or of leash , I had to work work extra on him because of these lil buggers! Now he ignores them on or off leash . I started with a prong collar, That didn’t last long ( work work😊) Now just loose leash or no leash at all , wich is more the case. I do keep his ecollar on for insurance when out , just in case. I didn’t say anything to the stupid lady lol.. not my dogs that are going nuts on the leashes in the office! Ha! I Live in Idaho , I’m originally from Ca😊
So I have a working line female GS in Romania. I needed to participate in a beauty contest to be able to breed her I needed at least 2nd place I got 1st but there are judges that don't recognize her as a GS because she is not the show line color. Unfortunately its more rotten then just animal rights here. Example: If you are a breeder of GS and you organize a contest you will get podium for sure no matter the dogs quality or training .....
They would rather put these dogs down than modify their thinking because that would be an admission that they are wrong and their ego won't allow that.
I saw this looking into suitable dog sports for my black mouth cur. She loves to hunt squirrels rats nutria. There is a barn hunt sport where u search for rats in a protective tube hidden in a course. But in the rules, they state u get points for dog enthusiasm. But lose points if they touch the cage or try to get the rat?? Talk about conflicting messages to a dog. I would be fine if they state u must be able to call your dog off the rat so they dont get banged up. But the way its worded, you just see the judges have an ostrich mentality about dogs, prey drive, and why dogs work.
They’ve dumbed down barn hunt from terrier trials to “everyone can play”. I have working terriers and I have a hard time building interest in this sport now because of this. It’s a terrier and hunting dog game, not a golden retriever, lab, border collie etc.etc. game.
I hear you haz. Im not in igp yet, dont have the dog yet and there isnt anywhere locally i can go so haveto really travel! Maybein a couple years, if its still around! I have searched for trials and even world championship videos are not the best quality. It would be more popular for sure if it was more open to thenpublic eye andmore attainable too!
It’s not just the sv…the dogs and owning them has gotten very expensive, helpers are now few and far between and now have monetized their skill and the sport is far too challenging to a generation raised on instant results…..I started in 88, society was very different back then…
The most difficult sport to train for ? Surely KNPV would be “more difficult “ ? Anyway don’t think the level of difficulty really matters , would be a shame to see it disappear.
Great video, i love how Haz is unafraid to voice his truths and stand up for his passion of dog sport, so many snowflakes out there who hide behind others and daren't rock the boat!
And because its dying...many people who don't have travel money or alot of time simply can't get into it. Every club near me for example is full and an hour or more away.
Great video. I don't know much about IGP but I agree the image is currently negative in mainstream people. It would benefit from more exposure and educational view. I believe every dog sport is beneficial for dogs if done properly whether it is IGP or dog dancing. Playing with your dog is never bad and different dogs have different type of play. I would really enjoy seeing videos on how you are achieving such level of obedience and control. Ill watch your videos for a bit. However, here are a few things you may want to think (point of view from a mainstream dog lover outside your sport.) 1 - Get rid of stranglers, shock colars and armspringers. You ll never win a positive image with those and if you are competent trainers you'll find other solutions. 2 - When you say your sports in a stocking breeds grounds for milatary and police, this is damaging your images. Shelters are full of these dogs simply because the poor dog ended in the wrong hands. People education could help here! Think more about how IGP can keep dogs out of shelters or how shelter dogs can benefit from it. 3 - You said that the top trainers in this sport are probably the amongs the best trainers in the world. That's probably true. But there a clean up that needs to be done in. There are a lot of dog abusers and I think a sport like IGP must clean its own back yard as much as possible and takes public stances against dog abuse. Leave alone the "Animal rights activist" battle. I agree with you they have the high ground of virtue. Concentrate on showing white hands on dogs abuse and show the benefit of your sport for dogs to all!
You don't even know what you write about. No, we will not abandon shock (as YOU call it) collars, or prong collars, etc. BECAUSE WE ARE CAPABLE TRAINERS, AND WE ADMIT THAT WE USE IT, BECAUSE THEY ARE EFFICIENT. If you would know IGP sport, you would also know, how it compares to everyday life full of competing motivations and stressors of life of an average urban dog, which can adapt to it through these already proven forms of training. And here we come to behavour therapy also. It is not coincidence that IGP or schutzhund trainers are the best proven behaviour therapists also.
ABSOLUTELY! YOU SAID WHAT I WOULD HAVE SAID IF I HAD THAT PERSON FACE-TO-FACE!!! STAY💪🏼STRONG, STAY🇺🇲FREE! (WHICH EVER FLAG YOU FLY!)(😊JUST STAY FREE!) (KEEP ON TRAINING YOUR) (DOGS 💯% AT ALL TIMES!!)
The most difficult sport? Come on man, I was so excited to watch the video. Anyway, nicely said, I’m with you with the rest, but let’s be honest with ourselves and our dogs and what any other sport is. You talked about the level of complexity where there’s literally mondioring which is nothing but complexity, where there’s French ring where the decoy is a crazy skilled maniac who can dodge your dog at any given time. JUST because we love the sport we train DOESNT mean that it’s the best, for us yes maybe it is BUT that’s an opinion of the person, the level of difficulty is a fact, and for me IGP definitely is not the most difficult and complicated. I’m not losing the topic here, again, I’m with you, dog sport trainers are the best of the whole world and all the positive only trainers can’t do anything admirable in sports and they only destroy the breeds and their purposes, but I HAD to tell you that about the difficulty man. Sorry I just had to.
"If you don't tell your story someone else will" Your sport is on trial in the court of public opinion. One side will bring facts, one will bring emotional stories. The one who tells the better story will win.
Perhaps you could join forces with Steve Stoops and a few other top trainers in the field, and establish a new regulatory council. There are western nations that will be legislative holdouts.
