I miss my therapist. The first time I met him, I thought he wasn't going to be able to help me as he was in his 60's while I was in my late 20's. But after that first appointment, I saw him as a grandfather type figure. He passed away a few years ago and the way I found out was a punch in the face. The staff asked if I went to Dave's, and I said no and wished I could because he retired a few months prior. They informed me they meant his funeral, not to his place. I about bawled and was speechless. RIP Dave. I miss you and just want you to know I'm doing a lot better. I've got a new baby girl due in April and my wife and I are coming up on twenty years together; eleven of those are married. My other daughter loved coming to my appointments with me and I hope you're looking down at me and are proud of what I've done since you've gone home.

The one and only time I went to see a therapist is when I was struggling with intense grief after losing my dog during my last year in college. She had been my support all throughout grade school and would calm me down when I needed it. But now she was gone and I was struggling to find new ways to cope with things in addition to missing her so much it physically hurt. I knew I was in a downward spiral and wanted help because the grief and lack of a coping mechanism was leading me to have suicidal thoughts almost every day. So, I went to see the school therapist. I explained to her that I was there because I am grieving the loss of my dog, but she hardly asked me about that at all. All she did was ask me about my family. When I told her I don't speak to my brother that much, she became hyper focused on that. I tried to tell her that I have literally zero negative feeling surrounding my brother, but she didn't listen and still kept asking me questions about him. I was annoyed and felt like we were not talking about any of the reasons why I had come to see her. I never went back.

Sounds like she shouldn't be a therapist... But, there are good people out there. I was lucky and found a good life coach who is studying to become a therapist. So, if you still need help, I hope you will keep looking. If being with someone doesn't feel right, you can tell them that you both are not a good match and find someone else.

My mom went to multiple therapists when she was a young adult because she had extreme trauma and PTSD, a lot of them turned her away because they genuinely couldn’t help her. Her last one she ever tried told her he would continue to see her for free just because he’s never experienced a patient with so much trauma and was super interested in hearing more about her issues so he could basically form a study 😭 she’s never been to therapy since which is so sad imo bc she truly needs it for her own mental peace.

My therapist validated that I don’t need a group home, that I am capable at being a functional human, I just don’t do it the way everyone else does. For years I had been told that I couldn’t live on my own if I tried, that I’d need a group home, all because I didn’t meet the standards of my parents in terms of cleanliness or how quickly I clean up after myself. But for once, a therapist saw that I am capable, my depression just makes it hard to do the things required of me. We worked on ways for me to get around my depression in order to be functional and while I’m not 100% there yet, I can safely say I’m getting there at a decent pace.

Unfortunately many health professionals and psychologists are attracted to the profession due to their own narcissism and not out of altruism or the feelies it can bring. It's quite common of those who work in the health sector to be fucked up inside usually, either resulting in them having too much or too little empathy if not full on celeberal narcissism or bpd even. An average well adjusted person will realize that there is many avenues you can follow for the betterment of society if your motives are sincere if your drive, discipline and intelligence don't match up with the expectations of a given profession; but that kind of sentiment is abrasive and dystonic to these types, to our detriment they persist. I've met these types, been friends with them and treated by them, sometimes it makes me question who should be wearing the lab coat not the gown

A bit unrelated, but that one at 17:15 really gets me. I had a urologist say this to me when I was 21, after going through lithotripsy to fragment two kidney stones that had grown to the size of quarters. He couldn't really answer where the kidney stones had come from, chalking it up to me drinking too much soda. Before the sugery, I couldn't walk, I couldn't sleep. After the surgery, I couldn't pass the stone fragments on my own, and it was all I could do to chug water to help lessen the pain. He said those exact words: "You'll probably have to deal with pain like this for the rest of your life." Well, as it turns out, it wasn't soda, and the life-altering pain had probably been avoidable. The kidney stones were caused by scar tissue in my ureter that blocked my kidney from draining. I had been born with a faulty ureter on that side, and that urologist hadn't even thought to check if the problem originated there. Ten years later, I'm experiencing kidney-stone-like pain again. My new doctor x-rayed the kidney; very few stones, but my left kidney was twice the size of my right one, swelled with fluid that couldn't pass. After surgery in November (pyeloplasty), my new urologist said: "Yeah, you probably won't have to worry about kidney stones anymore. At least until you need to repair your ureter again when you turn 65 or so." A year or two more, I might have been experienced kidney failure instead, all because my first urologist ten years prior sapped my hope away and didn't ask the right questions. In my honest opinion, if a doctor (therapist or otherwise) ever tells you: "get used to dealing with this for the rest of your life," it's time to get a new doctor.

I'm sorry you had to go through that. My husband had a kidney stone he couldn't pass. His idiot urologist decided to go in after it. The idiot mangled up his ureter. He would have died if another doctor hadn't stepped in and told the idiot my husband needed emergency surgery by a more qualified urologist. He wound up having to have multiple surgeries. Unfortunately, in NC there is an oddly specific law stating a urologist cannot be sued for malpractice unless the patient dies. We couldn't even get compensation from that AH to cover the cost of the surgeries. Yep, kidney problems can wreck your life, but a bad doctor is even worse.
@birdjericho

@@lorisewsstuff1607 That is... incredible. In the worst way possible, wow, I am so sorry (the existence of that law doesn't particularly surprise me, knowing what I know now, though that is 100% bull). At one point, I was even looking up what technology has been developed for replacing ureters if they become damaged. No such thing as a bionic ureter. To be honest, besides the brand-new concept of 3d-printing them, replacements just don't exist. No ureter = no kidney. It's crappy how difficult our plumbing is to replace, much less fix!
@lorisewsstuff1607
@lorisewsstuff1607 Год назад
@@birdjericho actually my husband's ureter was replaced with a section of his small intestine. Sounds great, right? That in it's self caused more problems. His body was like "wtf. That doesn't go there," and started making scar tissue to try to correct the problem. He had 2 surgeries to fix the first ureter. Most of the surgeries were to remove scar tissue that was blocking the new ureter. We did ask a couple times if it wouldn't be better to just remove the kidney on that side. Nobody would do it. They said it was unethical. He's fine now, but for a couple years it was a never ending nightmare. I hope someone comes up with a replacement so nobody else has to go through that. I hope your situation works out. It's not a good way to live.

Me: my parents would often be mad at us for not cleaning their dishes up. *About to go into further detail* Bih therapist interrupting me: do why you don't just clean? You live there. You could just move out or deal with their rules. She stunned me silent and I just left. That was back 2009. On speaking to a new therapist, same clinic I told her about that and she got pissed and demanded to know who was responsible back then. What I wanted to say was that my parents intentionally left dirty dishes around the house and if we missed any my father on particular would kick up a massive fuss, pounding down the doors at like 2 or 3am, calling us nasty b**tches for it.. it was a recurring issue at we had no where to go as they essentially trapped us living with them...

I've had some good but also awfully bad psychologists. One noticeable example was a psychologist I went to for a few months when I was sixteen. I went to him bc I needed a written assessment, which not all psychologists are specialized to give. During his sessions, he'd always look like he would fall asleep any given second. Most were filled with awkward silence, bc I didn't know what he wanted me to say. I ended up asking about his career, family life and asked around three times if he was actually qualified to give this damn assessment, to which I didn't get an answer to this very day. One day, I was a bit early. Now, it's important to know that I don't like making noise when I move, so I'm almost always silent and ppl don't notice me. Just as it happened that day. The door to the building was open and I went in, silently, and sat in the waiting room. Now I _could_ be mistaken about this, but I am pretty sure that the stuff I heard coming from the other room was not meant for juvenile ears, or anyone's ears for that matter. In other words, it sounded like he was watching porn. I sat there for about five minutes and didn't really know what to do, but I recorded the noise just in case I needed something against him at any given point. I decided that it would be suspicious if I just left, so I went out silently and came back in while opening the door with a bang. During the session I told him that this would be the last time he's seeing me and went out. He didn't ever send me the bills for that day, so I'm sure he knows what I heard. And if he likes his reputation and career, he'll better not send it _ever_ .

He started taking them himself and was absolutely convinced that they had made him super strong. This was community mental health when we visited them in their homes, and he would drive the workers out to the high school football field to have brick throwing contest with them to show them how far he could throw the brick now that he’s been taking the supplements. I didn’t have the heart to tell him that he could probably throw the brick so far because he was throwing bricks all the time and just getting really good at it.

In middle school I played cribbage all the time at lunch with the school counselor, and another boy in my grade. We were both mega loners, and then the counselor encouraged us to play just the two of us, and even started a "games club" so kids could play board and card games. Lot of kids who wanted to avoid the bullies outside used it as a way to get away from them and play games with some other folks. Counselor was an amazing dude. That year of middle school was made so much better because of him

My first concussion I didn't have a choice but to go to work the next day (McDonald's). I started having auditory hallucinations without knowing it, so I thought everyone was being a dick. I was straight up like, y'all chill out. I had to take 5 too cool down, take my head set off, just to find out that I wasn't hearing others on there. It was auditory hallucinations. Told my manager I had to go back to the ER. Then I was forced to take a week off. I come back to being demoted and no one bothered to say anything. I stopped going above and beyond. I stopped loving my job (yes I truly loved working at McDonald's, no clue why). Then I got bullied by a manager for until I was fired. She abused her power. One night I had my suicide planned after being fed up with it. A regular talked me out of it, but I knew if I went home (lived with my family at the time) I would be tempted. I talked up the other manager and said that I've gotta go to the ER cuz I'm suicidal. Came for my next shift and was told I was fired. I had all the paperwork for the visit. Job after that was great until my GM started trying to forced me to be Christian. Cut my hours to less than half and could barley afford food. I had panic attacks every single day. I had migraines almost every day. I developed panic disorder. That, and my depression, anxiety, and fibromyalgia allowed me to get on disability, first try, no court, no lawyer, in only 7 months. My second concussion was in April 2020, when COVID was really bad, so I couldn't risk going to the ER. I thought the whole "don't go to bed right after getting a concussion" thing was an old wives tale. Nope. It wasn't as painful and swollen like my first one, but so many more things got mentally fucked up.

About a day into my stay,I have my first meeting with the psychiatrist (breaking news, he’s a c**t) and literally all I said to him was “I want to go home” next day, I was in the back of a police car being driven 2 more hours away from my town. Stayed there for the night was released the next afternoon with a random ass BPD diagnosis. 👁👄👁 yet all this mf had to say was “I don’t think I’ll kill myself” and the docs are like GOOD ENOUGH BYE

My first therapist constantly guilt tripped me for my sensory issues. I started hiding things from everyone in my life. Fourth grade was the lowest point of life so far, and she did nothing but tell me to forgive my bullies, and to stop being gay. We did at home therapy, and one day my mom walked in on one of her rants. She went off on her, and my therapist continued by saying take your daughter to conversion therapy she’s sinning. Jokes on her I have the best mom who doesn’t give a care who I love. I never saw that therapist again, except for when she ran into me at the store and proceeded to verbals berate me before being dragged away by store employees. Can’t believe she was a therapist.

Two stories, I'd been seeing a therapist for years cuz my life sucked and i tended to lash out over it, that got misdiagnosed a few ways but it mostly boiled down to teachers not doing what they said they were doing and tolerating or even encouraging me being bullied. So in addition to this therapist the school psychologist also wanted to see me. we talked and she was the first one to figure out i wasnt actually half as bad as people said (a lot of my reputation was due to me standing up to teachers and calling them out for not doing their job, they didnt like that). So we just basically started hanging out every monday, talking about our weeks and trading baked goods. the one that floored her was when i asked what my actual diagnoses was, she checked my file and said asbergers. she thought a moment and said it didnt seem right though, so we looked up what qualifes u for asbergers. turns out of the seven indicators i had two that werent just easily explained away. Like one was just a big vocabulary, my favorite pasttime was reading and i was finishing books daily, of course i had a big vocabulary. So we were both floored to figure out i didnt actually have a diagnosis despite being labeled with one my whole life. The second was when i told my therapist about the psychologist, she asked what we talked about and i said we discussed baking. she could not stop laughing, said that was not what she expected and we found it funny.

17:45 while I am not a psychologist, I am in the medical field. While it may seem strange, the easiest way to find out if a person is suicidal is to ask them straight up " are you going to kill yourself?". Don't beat around the bush, don't imply anything, just ask straight up.

(I’m Latin American and grew up in Miami so no shade is being thrown, the following is a description not a criticism 😂) she was every exaggerated stereotype of older Cuban women 😂 she did not give a single f*** about my issues 😂 she just wanted to gasp and grab her cheeks (like this emoji 😱) in the most dramatic fashion I’ve ever seen 😂😂😂 she just wanted more details about my ex and his messed up life, so if I derailed and went back to how it made me feel she’d redirect the conversation back to him… woman was insane 😂😂😂 I mean she was nice and actually really funny (and over the top) but not very helpful 😂

The trick with therapy is finding one that suits you. There are some shocking ones out there. I had a really good one who was a social worker who helped me through my initial diagnosis of PTSD, Severe Anxiety and Depression. I had worked through a lot to the point I was able to return back to full time work. Then an incident happened at work that tipped all that work back on it's head and I went to go back to the therapy and she just told me to go back to work. I couldn't sleep, couldn't get out of bed and the suicidal ideation was something i had not had this severe.... So I found a great new therapist that just said, it's OK to take the time to heal. She has helped me a lot. If your not happy with one, try another until you are.

It is crazy when the brain isn't working correctly. It is like a computer glitching out. People walk around, brush their teeth, make dinner or talk. Or at least that is what they think they are doing. How would they know? Their brain isn't working. They think they are having a dialog, talking about different topics, maybe the weather, and in reality they just stand there repeating one single word over and over again.
