As a kid growing into an adult, i would always tell people my favorite video game ever was psychonauts, but most people had no idea what game i was talking about. I'm so stoked about this. oh man.
Seeing comments like this nearly bring tears to my eyes bc I always thought that psychonauts would never have this sort of popularity. It makes me feel valid knowing others also grew up sounding crazy trying to explain the game to people who would never care.
Just seeing the characters and styles in this video is sending me back to middle school and high school when I played the first game once a year. It will always be one of my all time favorites. I have faith that double fine will deliver another amazing experience.
I am glad that Tim Schafer returned as director and co-writer. He was the creative genius of the first one. Also returning as co-writer is Eric Wolpaw. He also was a writer for the Portal games and the Half-life 2 episodes.
this is by far the best game of 2021. I have played for 5 hours straight and I normally fckn hate this genre. This is how you make a game. Truly a beautiful masterpiece. Definetely buy and support developers.
Agreed. This isn't the sort of game I usually take to but its currently on course to be the first game I finish this year. I tried the original recently when it came to gamepass and couldn't get into it. Psychonauts 2, however, I feel obliged to see through until the end. Creative design along with an intelligently written plot. Can see it if featuring heavily in game of the year awards in a few months time.
The original Psychonauts was such a wonderfully unique game back in the day, one of which I still play to this day. Im looking forward to playing this one!
I never got to play it back then. In fact the only reason I even know about it now is because of all the hype around the sequel finally coming out lol. I just got the original on Steam though so I'll definitely be checking it out. Do you think it still holds up now?
Where is it at though? I keep seeing it on multiple platforms yet only see Xbox SX DIGITAL ? It's very confusing to me cause it's being reviewed and compared by creators yet I ain't seeing it.
@@justin0613 It's not I just found out it's XBOX SX only for the release. Im so disappointed 😞 If I'm wrong and I can get on my ps4 or Xbox one that's great BUT physical copies are not happening anytime soon.
The original Psychonauts was one of the greatest games on Playstation 2. That shit was incredibly designed, incredibly written--amazing fucking art, and I can't express how damn happy I am that this review isn't calling it a shitty letdown. Fuck yes The noir/darkness in how the original explored mental illness, and just the darker parts/presentation of the human psyche was and still is one of a kind. Playing it as a kid/teen, I was as disturbed as I was emotionally gripped. What's said and what wasn't said...highly advise that everyone plays these damn games
I played it on Xbox and it was my favorite game on the system back in the day. I really wish MS would port the Xbox version to modern hardware and do a physical release I would so buy it again!
This game is phenomenal, one of my all-time favorites!!! I didn't play part 1 yet jumping to 2 didn't seem like I was withdrawn from information or anything, the recap at the beginning of the game set the tone and from there I was instantly hooked. I haven't played a game this fun in years.
My siblings recently chipped in and bought me an Xbox XS w/ a subscription/game pass thingy. Just in time before yet another lockdown. And I had heard one or two things about Psychonauts, but wrote it off immediately because the look of the main character made me assume it was a Ratchet & Clank sorta game (which I enjoyed as a younger teen, but it's not my jive now as an adult). My brother mentioned this just came out and strongly recommended I play it - he said it was the same makers as Grim Fandago or something, and I thought meh might as well got nothing else to do. Downloaded it, played it and thought it was pretty sweet. Then I kept playing, and when you think it can't get any weirder, it does. You think the opening area is the expanse of the worlds, and that when you're close to finishing that'll be it. But no, it opens up into a much larger world a few times. I was gobsmacked by the incredible detail of practically every level and how much content there was. The imagination and creativity that went into this, as well as the varying gameplay to keep things interesting is incredible. Every boss battle felt vastly different, the challenges in levels changed and the environments were unique. I found myself playing for entire days (and I haven't done that since I was a teen, as an adult I've lost a bit of interest in games). I was excited for every new area and level, and wanted to explore everything thoroughly. The enemies and the items are so well thought out and logical in regards to place in the Psychonaut universe. The dialogue is funny and cutscenes are interesting to watch (I always skip cutscenes cos I'm lazy but on this I didn't). By far and large I am incredibly perfect this game is. I feel like I haven't come across a game that has felt this well rounded in both gameplay and story since maybe Bloodborne or Hollow Knight (two of my other favourite games). It's been refreshing playing something like this, as I've felt a lot of games of late - just like movies - have been kinda rushed, or have lots of bugs or issues, ideas haven't been roughed out properly, or they're obvious copies of something else. 100% recommend this game to anyone, you can tell the people who made it enjoy making games - it really shows.
This game was my childhood! Just played the OG a few months ago on PS4, I'm so hyped to come back to this world in HD. There aren't many games I'm picking up on day 1,but that's an exception 😁
I guess this is the perfect bookend From leaving Lucas Arts to joining Microsoft. The history of Double Fine is an interesting one, was glad they finally were able to gain access to their old Lucas Art creations after Disney acquired Lucas films. Hope Microsoft lets them stray true to themselves
I've played Rhombus of Ruin after discovering they were making a sequel. It was a pretty good game, the story was cohesive, and they used the mechanics of VR very well. Remember, you can truly understand the perception of "Size" in VR
I can’t wait to start it up today! Remembering the vibrant palates? Of the original such as the Spanish matadors mind and others just gets me hyped on what they can do with an actual budget this time!
I've had this game pre ordered for a little while now. Started playing the original for the first time a couple of days ago cause it was $1 on steam and its really good! Definitely excited to play this in a couple of days!
I just watched a Gameranx video from 6 years ago. Jake. Your voice sounds so much cooler now. More gravelly. More...adult. You're the shit, dude. I never buy a game without your recommendation and YOU'VE NEVER BEEN WRONG. Thank you, guys! Keep em coming!
This game is amazing. I started on it last night and it's SO MUCH FUN! Giving me that pure fun and wonderment vibes a lot of old platformers used to have!
@@KidsWithGuns1992 All of them? Can't recall any particular one, all of them felt pretty much the same that's why you can't even name one. You were just mezmerized by the effects but it's ok, you were probably not even around when the first game came out. Quality has dropped drastically.
I personally liked hopping back into brains later to grab collectables, if only to have a proper look at the level design again. Also helps that the dialogue changes on subsequent visits. Great game.
I gotta say after playing it a couple days I absolutely love it, though I do think the combat and collecting weighs it down just a bit. However, the level design is absolutely genius and we really need more games with this kinda charm 9/10 for me
Looks like a solid fun game and I loved the neon surfing level. Definitely has that 2000s game but updated. Hopefully now we can get part 3 within 2 or years.
Oh my god, Jake! Dude I had no idea you worked with these guys. You may not remember me.. we knew each other many years ago when I was LevelSave. Great to see you still in the industry.
Love this universe. Became a fan in a month and played both games. Maybe this 2nd game feels a bit old here and there on the game structure but man... The story is AMAZING
Yeah I just finished Rhombus of Ruin after re-completing Psychonauts 1 and it’s an awesome experience in VR. I only wish it were longer. Hope to see another VR Psychonauts in the future… but now on to Psychonauts 2!
I really want to play the first one, I always wanted it but so many good games where coming out on ps2 it slipped my mind, now I really want to find a copy I only do physical copies, I still have all my ps2 games. Dark cloud 1..2..Jak and Dexter 1,2,3 and they did a racing one also..there where so many cartoonish games back then it was crazy, good times tho. I preordered it so happy I did...
@@monocleduck1115 Definitely, I started it yesterday and it really olds up well against the test of time, the witty humor is great, and the graphics are not bad on pc, only when the cutscenes hit, I'm hooked on it
@@blindsunn yeah cutscenes feel a little bit weird with that grainy filter over them, but gameplay is really enjoyable and level design is really fucking good
My dad downloaded on his Xbox game pass and I must say… this game is being coma’d on. It’s soo good, and I have barely scratched the surface. I have about 8 hours in but this is what I have found: Refined combat experience from the first makes everything feel, flow, and easy to use all simultaneously. You lock on, click, and flick away The level design has improved. From the first Game, the levels and environments you used to explore in that ps2 game feel contained. While they did the most they had, you can tell they were limited by technology alone… this however is what I feel is Psychonauts 2 biggest strength: the scope. You don’t understand how big and how much of a game you have until you start loading the area and then you realize you have maps, ya know with an S, verticality, a massive lack of invisible walls making it a guided free roam experience just like the first. I have visited only 3 brains and they all feel exclusive from each other. 1 mind can feel almost completely different from itself which is amazing in its own right but when you experience the PTSD ridden brain of Ford Cruller, you begin to realize just how creative the game is and how masterful it crafted its storytelling experiences… this is all without talking about perhaps the strongest part of the first and 2nd game: Dialogue + characters+ story The story has some crazy twist and turns, but the dialogue will make you love this game if you pay attention to what’s going on. Like Oleanders explosive Diarrhea causing massive amounts of damage to the Jets lavatory… Raz thinking his mom and dads “Quality alone time” is the name of a drink… or my favorite so far: Oleander straight up dropping The acronym : Fubar( Fucked up beyond all Repair!) in a E for everyone. It’s both grown up , childish and often bust the 4th wall. You can tell some of the lines were off script but kept cause it was just too damn funny.
I can't wait i feel like it's gonna be awsome not only bc it's a direct sequal to an AWSOME IP but a through back to those early to mid 2000s action adventure games like Rachet and Clank
I'm still playing this one. I only get a couple hours after work. So far, I'm loving it. Psychonauts is one of my top beloved games. I think this sequel is lacking a bit of charm and whimsy that the first brought but this game is still ridiculously fun and unique. It's about time! ❤
Lacking charm are you for real this game is outstanding all the work that they put in the whole thing is amazing better than the old graphics one this is by far better than the original version
Also, man! All the levels shown in this are the opening/basic levels. Once you get further... they get so insane. Definitely give this a go if you appereciate attention to detail/really incredible visuals.
I played when i was like 8-9, the only thing i remember that some puzzles and bosses were really hard, not like new games you have to repeat a level several times in order to get through the game.
@@mog_3825 just do u mate , it’s just a form of entertainment until we inevitably die 😂. it’s fine to not enjoy it and it’s fine for other people to love it , but commenting on people’s post who have an opinion on it , don’t u think your wasting your time 🤷🏻♂️?
@@mog_3825 Oh boy you're really upset and sour over something. It's definitely not a kids game - I made the same assumption as you, but once I gave it a go. Dude, it's really good. Has very adult humour in it, and is definitely more of an adult game than a kids game. You should stop that negative/nasty attitude and putting down other people for enjoying things. Maybe you'll feel a little less depressed/shitty about life :)
I just finished the game last night, and all I can say is this….I am sooo glad I preordered this. I was a fan of the original and I am very pleased with this game. The story is great and funny, the controller layout I had to get use to due to some Changes (but that wasn’t hard), and the Replayability is just as good as the original. 5 out of 5. I hope they make a 3rd game showing us how they go from Juniors to full fledged agents.
I need to finish the original quick! It’s a classic and I can’t wait to play the sequel once I’m done. It looks amazing! Thanks for this review! These are always the most honest reviews on RU-vid
Was that mr pokey loke I saw??? I really hope so he was one of my faves tbh! Lol I hope some of the campers show up at some point too! I just am so excited for the second one! Its downloading now! Lol
like many other older gamers I bought the 1st on at release. it was an amazing experience. never thought of see a sequel. let alone an outstanding one. I'm only 1hr on on Xbox one gamepass beta. beautiful looking. smooth. not a bit of lag. I'm already in love.
I first entered Psychonauts with the VR game. I really liked it. I thought "hey, this is a little bit like Monkey Island", without realising Tim Schafer was a common factor. It seems to me the VR game got pretty mixed reviews, but I felt like the psychic powers were well suited to VR, and easier to control. I have now started Psychonauts 2 and it is great. If I have time I will go back and check out the original once I am done with this one.
I just want to take a moment to say that Psychonauts 2 is the best, most heart felt game that I've played in a very long time. The amount of love and soul that was put into this game is absolutely incredible and I believe that every single person out there stands to actually learn something from it that can be applied to every day life.
This video is so great And I really like psychonauts but will this be on the ps4? Because this is without a doubt one of the games I really want to play.
Never played the VR game but I loved the original. Glad to hear that they did it justice. I think my favorite level in the original was dropping into the game board to play that wargame with Napoleon’s descendant (Fred?)
I like games like this with such humour and charm. Same with ones like grim fandango, Beyond good and evil, Oscar (on Amiga 1200)... games with their own distinctive look and feel. This does look undeniably psychonautsy, so I'm quite excited about it
Kind of surprised you made no mention of the TK ball, and how limited it was, compared to the first game. If it was mentioned, and I missed it, apologies
I’m playing Psychonauts 1 for the first time and the only criticism I have of it is the dates controls, so with that fixed for the sequel I can’t wait to finish 1 and move onto 2
If you buy this; Keep playing til the end even if you’re sceptic! I’m currently at the end scenes and for the last 8 hours my mind’s been shattered and my eyes have been drooling. Can’t recommend it enough
The first Psychonauts is available for only $4 on the PlayStation store But that’s only good until September 30 three more days from now I’m going to buy it for only four dollars
I'm 26 years old. I never played the first one. This sequel literally reminds of why I fell in love with gaming. What a beautiful, well written and just all around fun game.
