In this build guide I discuss and showcase an incredibly powerful support build for the Psyker class in Warhammer 40k: Darktide. It focuses on using shields and dishing out stuns and stagger to keep the team alive by controlling the entire battlefield. Make your missions buttery smooth with this very active and fun build!
Darktide recently received Patch 14 which rebalanced a lot of talents and weapons. Any new, current, or returning players who want a viable build to get right to purging, look no further!

Since patch 13 dropped, everybody seemed to ignore the Purgatus. It's still my go to staff exactly for the reason you said. I know a lot of people are about leading the damage boards, but I've saved people many times with its stagger, and like being able to keep a group locked up with it. Like you said, it's the only staff that can properly handle a lot of mobs that are spread out. All the other staffs effectiveness drop significantly in those situations. I'm not quite willing to go the smite route yet though, as when it comes to pugs many times they don't appreciate what I'm doing with it and just run off.

Fair take! I've found that when my teammates eff off on auric shock troop or maelstrom we generally fail regardless of what I'm running, so I've enjoyed running smite to really solidify the pub runs that stand a chance.

@@vgamefaceI play zealot, I guess you could say religiously (I’m trying the other classes but I’m still going back to zealot) and I’m finding that I have to play either: - an idol build so I can quickly boost everyone’s toughness and buy time with the stagger of the pulses ( it really helps when there is a lot of hounds) - a stealth build so I can help up my squads of randoms when they get caught out for straying too far from the group and trying to be a hero. The worst encounter I had recently was a guy charging ahead on the assassination mission right before the elevator. He jumped down ahead of the group that needed to heal and he got downed, we were getting shot from below and hit with waves of poxwalkers so we couldn’t do anything… the guy left when the run wasn’t dead if he waited a minute or two longer we would have him up. It really is a strange awkward dance of trying to babysit players who want to rush ahead and inevitably get themselves in bad situations yet seem to blame the team for not immediately throwing the run in an attempt to save them when the risk isn’t worth it. I think what bothers me the most in situations like this is the game rewards being selfish by splitting off to look for resources and grimoires but will punish the players for not staying together, it’s made worse by the fact when someone runs ahead they get to sit out for a few minutes while the team is punished by having to fight situations intended for a full squad while missing a quarter of the teams strength.

Well with patch 14? Surge staff is bugged, and getting buffs Empowered Psionics and the Smite Perks. It is ridiculous honestly. Clearing groups of elites like nothing else haha. I tried it once and was killing any elites in seconds while stopping them in their tracks. It wasn't fun though. Maybe if I tried playing on the harder difficulties yet I still have teams get wiped on difficulty 3. So yeah... I am only level 27.

I actually like going for all the crit related triggers with Purgatus. When you're blasting an incoming horde you will be critting all the time. Which will give you a nice 15% damage boost basically instantly and constantly recover your toughness. Plus the immunity to ranged attacks which can be pretty hilarious. Had moments where my team just wouldn't kill ranged enemies so I just walked up to an incoming horde and stood there melting them down while tons of bullets kept whistling past me left and right. Pretty badass and fun if a little suicidal when you overdo it.

@@attackmanatee02 Hmm interesting idea. Off the top of my head I'd say a bleed dagger, brain burst, and purgatus staff would all provide dots and cover all the enemy types and situations, including a good ranged option (BB). Infernus on a lasgun as you mentioned would work as well in place of purgatus but you'd lack any meaningful horde-clear without ammo dumping. Either way I'd build out as much crit as possible to proc burns, so sticking to the right of the tree to get the crit aura and 5% crit node. Taking Scrier's Gaze for crit and damage and Empowered Psionics to boost your BB would be where I'd start!

wildfire is not giving you extra soulblaze, all it does is transfer up to 4 soulblaze in total to a random amount of enemies (up to 4 enemies with 1 soulblaze each of them), your purg has a cap of 15 soulblaze stack, so wildfire are not spreading your flame that far since your purg is already spreading more than 4 stacks in a large area around them already

Purgatus with Smite just seems to overlap rolls, it feels like overkill taking both at the same time. Every time you used Purg, I thought Smite would work too, and every time you used Smite I thought Purg would be fine too, not to mention faster quelling since you're using the staff. And 15:15 is where the build really falls apart, when the Monstrosity shows up. That entire skirmish you revived one, pushed a burster, and... that's it, that's all you really could do. That's what happens when you stack 2 close range horde-clearing utilities. If I had Surge staff, sure I'll take Smite to help with horde clear. With Purgatus, I'll take Brain Burst or Assail for the range. But Purgatus with Smite? Over-specialization leads to over-reliance.
@vgameface
@vgameface 11 месяцев назад
Fair enough. But also at that timestamp the squad had no real issue dispatching the monstrosity. Which is sort of the idea behind the build. Most people run builds with crazy damage output but few people run with a lot of defensive capabilities. You running defense for the whole team lets the other 3 dish out maximum damage all of the time. I generally like to run builds that can do at least a little of everything, but I think helping the rest of the team do their jobs better is an undervalued skill. Smite is also pretty bad at horde clear since the damage is so low, but it makes encounters with crushers, maulers, and bulwarks a total joke. And purgatus annihilates hordes but falls short when ogryn and maulers show up. So yeah there's a level of redundancy but they both perform different functions.
@holmesholmes.8784
@holmesholmes.8784 11 месяцев назад
@@vgamefacewith mauler and crusher, i think the smite stunning is great, but its not reducing your chance of killing them, the purg burning and your uncanny sword would do better cleaning them off than smiting them in my opinion
@vgameface
@vgameface 11 месяцев назад
@@holmesholmes.8784 It depends on the situation. 3 crushers in a hallway I'll probably burn and stab them, but 10 crushers in a big room? I'll stunlock them with smite while a TH zealot and a krak vet murder them. If the team is useless I can still alternate stun and burn to whittle them all down.
@MagicHamsta
@MagicHamsta 10 месяцев назад
Have to agree. This build is mediocre due to crippling overspecialization. It's also a win-more build which is inferior to builds that simply delete enemies outright. He would've been doing better with assail and purg. Just dump assail & purg/stagger while waiting for more assail charges. Or voidstrike/trauma & smite.
@itzsn0wyiii909
@itzsn0wyiii909 11 месяцев назад
If you're using smite then the staff feels redundant, voidstaff is so strong that I can do literally everything with low risk. And for the shield bubble is a lot stronger because it covers more area and regens toughness for everyone inside. The stun ability seems nice but if youre playing right then you won't need the wall
@SpliffyHusk
@SpliffyHusk 11 месяцев назад
Voidstaff is great for a cohesive team, but purgatas staff has some of the best mob control. What’s crazy is this wepaon activates a perk where you apply burn stacks to enemies when you kill an enemy with soulblaze stacks, so the dps jumps. You already can apply 4 stacks to a huge horde, so anything you apply is closer to 12. Hordes of maulers and ragers, bulwark, hounds, etc. they all take tick damage and burn quickly once you add more. I’ve saved many teams from overwhelming horde and I barely move from my spot.

The dome is a solid choice, I have nothing bad to say about it! But I mentioned in another comment that: I found that I generally wasn't needing 360 degree protection, and the wall lets you take two charges so you can use it more often and have more uptime. You can also use them to sort of leap frog across large open areas, which can otherwise be hard without ranged options. The repulsion of mutants, hounds, and bursters also helps a lot in super chaotic battles. Also, it's just really damn funny to me to make mutants run face first into a wall. @MrLaz0rz
@MrLaz0rz 11 месяцев назад
The staff generates less peril and kills trash mobs faster but wont stunlock the random elite in the pack, smite generates more peril and does tend to stunlock the elites as well as the horde pack around it, so theyre both situationally different. If you have the armored mauler (2 handed guy) in a trash mob, charging flame staff and letting out a long burst of fire will stun him initially for about a second but he will walk through it and smack your ass down. if you have teammates around, stunlocking the whole group might be better since it lets them choose targets at will, and if its a big trash horde, which you get on much higher difficulties, the flame staff clears them better than smite.

i don't like the changes they made to psykers warp charges, that they automatically get depleted with each ability you use. it's just bad. also i don't think the soulfire charges are necessary since they only apply by killing an elite or specialist mob. which you won't do with smite since it's the lowest dps known to man and if you use purgatus staff you won't be reliant on the extra 20 dmg ticks from that stuff. better to spec into increased damage from all warp sources by up to 20% and 10% extra health. and i don't know why but i feel like the smite and purgatus are just the same in 90% of all situations. also i'd take 5% crit aura and the talent that gives you ranged attack dodge for 1 second. with the 5%crit node and purgatus staff fire up you're nearly immune to ranged damage which i always struggled the most when playing with a purgatus.

Ok so after playing around with this build a few hours I have a question... what does the staff do that lighting can't? I noticed a bunch of times the big Ogryns and shoitgunners just ignored the streams staggger effect. Do you use lightning for those enemies and when in massive fights with loads of maulers, crushers etc and then use the staff for when 'on the move/not in heavy combat' ? Like it so far :)
@vgameface
@vgameface 11 месяцев назад
Essentially! Ogryns don't really stagger in the fire and have a ton of hp to burn down, so either switch to your sword to quickly stab them down, or use smite to stun them while your team kills them. Smite does very little damage, so its best when there are a lot of ogryn or maulers, or just a lot of chaos to quell to give your team a chance to recover. And on bursters, it's essentially a super safe ranged shove. And then use the staff for clearing all the trash and medium stuff, shotgunners included. Don't forget that you can pop clusters of shotgunners or ragers with a few blasts of your short primary that does extreme stagger, then hit them with the full stream while they are recovering. Glad you're enjoying the build!

I feel like the Trauma w/brain burst and Surge w/smite covers the Purgatus role about as well while not sacrificing your ranged capabilities and dealing with specials and elites. Still need to get a proper Trauma staff with Blazing Spirit, but the new True Aim perk sounds pretty nice combo wise to be able to bank a crit. With brain burst and True Aim I found one enemy counts twice to your 5 weakspot hits so it's pretty easy to stockpile a guaranteed crit for burning a horde with Wildfire. The other big part for me at least is the (hopefully) unintentional team trolling Purgatus does. When I'm playing Vet or Zealot I hate Purgatus staffs when they start flash-banging me with quick fires. I understand the stagger benefits, but can't really figure out where that sniper is when all I see is white.

I run assail and the dome; I use to use the final middle talent at the bottom (I’ve forgot it’s name) something empowered, now I use the one on the left to gain warp charges for that extra charge speed and damage output; I’ve been tempted to try this cc build but I can’t pull myself away from the force staff because of its damage output on the secondary attack and assail and the duelling sword cover every enemy I encounter accept monstrosities although the sword can easily keep me standing during a one to one fight with one due to its mobility for dodging and fast damage output due to it’s quick attacks; I couldn’t see what benefit the fire staff has over the force one accept stun locking? And assail can easily do this to majority of enemies on first contact

Which staff are you using now? They're all force staves so I'm not sure which one you're talking about. Purgatus staff is the best crowd control staff hands down so it just depends on what you want your weapons to do.

Gonna go a bead and guess they mean void strike. I feel like flame staff and smite gives you a massive weakness to enemies at range while having double cc options… Changing out either to something else seems like it would be better. Smite can CC absolutely everything, can kill large ammounts of small enemies with some effort, so you just need some big enemy priority damage from your ranged option. Purgatus seems like it would pair very well with brain burst IMO, you can CC/Kill almost everything short of a crusher/Mauler and monstrosities with some fire, so brain burst and empowered psionics would let you quickly pop those scary targets and also have a ranged snipe availible for gunner/snipers if needed All that to say, this looks fun and viable, Just a bit over specialized in a way that’s hard to use all at once with two large peril dumps in the build that do very similar things

Nothing quite like perma-stunning 10 crushers that would have wiped the group.

Pretty much Copied this build. It simply doesn't work. Died Faster than whatever build that I made up. Lesson learned kids. Don't copy and paste anything that you're not sure of. Best to Discover things on your own. It's more rewarding that way.

Sorry it didn't work for you. I guarantee it does work, my win ratio with it is quite high, it just won't be for everyone. Case in point, Helbore rifles on the Veteran and zoomy dagger builds on the Zealot are both super popular meta builds everyone loves, and I simply cannot play them and do not enjoy them at all. Luckily there are tons of options. I agree it's a ton of fun to experiment and find your own builds. Honestly I hope people copy my builds and then change them up to be just right for their own preferences and playstyles.
