BACKSTORY: ROMANCING THE STONE
(2002 / Van Ness/ FoxStar/ AMC / 21 mins. total)
Ex. Prod. - Kevin Burns
Dir. & Prod. by - Stacey Dowdy
Narr. by - Rino Romano
One of the most popular episodes of AMCs old BACKSTORY series takes a look at one of the greatest filmic success stories of the 1980s, ROMANCING THE STONE was a dream come true for all involved: from first time screenwriter Diane Thomas, to producer Michael Douglas (taking on the role of action hero actor for the first time), and director Robert Zemeckis (who years before BACK TO FUTURE, ROGER RABBIT and FLIGHT) was considered a long shot commercially unviable film maker.

I watched it when I was a kid in the late 80s or early 90s and just watched it again. It stuck in my head in certain ways and over the years I've occasionally remembered parts and always wanted to revisit it. I never noticed the adult content and humor back then though

I used to watch this on cable all the time. Such a classic. Turner was so pretty. I feel bad that her arthritis & the steroids killed her looks. I loved how Joan was a scared little hermit romance writer than gets into a great adventure & changes into a more outgoing woman & meets a man like in her novels. Wasnt this a career making role for devito? B4 that he had bit parts in couckos nest & terns of endearment for film & of course on taxi. He stole the show in this & started starring in films twins war of the Rose's jewel of the Nile a strange little film with billy crystal dont throw momma from the train. Etc. Zemeckis thank god this film did well bc we got back to the future the next year . An all time classic.

Everyone likes to say that this is an Indiana Jones rip off or that Indy inspired Romancing the Stone and Jewel of the Nile because those films came out 3 and 4 years after Raiders of the Lost Ark and Romancing came out the same year as Temple of Doom, but in actual fact, the script was basically a done deal in the late 1970s and Michael Douglas himself had spent years trying to get the movie made, so it just happened to come out a few years later. I also really like Jewel of the Nile in a fun kind of way, despite the awkward, stereotypic depictions of Middle Eastern and North African people. It's more rewatchable to me than Romancing, but I acknowledge that Romancing is indeed the superior film. Part of the problem with the sequel was that Robert Zemeckis was busy working on Back To the Future and couldn't do Jewel of the Nile, so there's a bit of tonal inconsistency. Jewel is a straight action comedy with a bit of romance thrown in, where the romance and characterization is more front and centre in the first film. I would have liked to see these characters again, even in 2022, but that's not going to happen.

First time screenwriter, Diane Thomas, died in a car accident a year after this movie came out. She died in the Porche that Michael Douglas purchased for her after the success of Romancing The Stone.

Oh I heard that she had died after the film came out but I didn’t know it involved a car that Douglas had bought for her. What a sad and tragic footnote to this beloved movie.

Clint Eastwood and Barbara Streisand? There was that chemistry between Streisand and Redford in "the Way We Were" that maybe they were thinking of banking on. I think I might have liked to see her give it a try, but not Eastwood.

Used Cars was pretty funny. I give it at least three stars out of five. 1941 was insanely funny. And both of these movies bombed ? Nonsense !

Sly Stallone was offered two "Stone" movies back in 1983. One was Romancing the Stone. And the other was Rhinestone. I guess he thought a flat out comedy would be better for his career. Of course, hindsight being what it is, he made the wrong choice. After that debacle, he stopped flipping coins when choosing screenplays and decided he would now pick scripts using "Eenie, meenie, minie, moe" which explains Oscar, Stop or My Mom Will Shoot and Over The Top! Actually, nothing explains Stop or Mom Will Shoot. (The real reason he did "Stop" is better than my crummy joke. He was tricked into it by none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger who began to notice around town that a jealous Sly was going after scripts Arnold said he wanted to do. So Arnold hatched a plan. After reading "Stop or My Mom Will Shoot" and realizing it was the WORST script he EVER read, he would let it be known around town that Stop will be his next big summer blockbuster. Sly's agent caught one whiff of this and "stole" the screenplay out from under Arnold's nose. And Arnold laughed and laughed and laughed).
