Honestly, and this is not hype, this video is more helpful than my tractor manufacturer's videos AND manuals combined! All I can figure is John Deere must have a business plan that relies on new tractor owners like myself to fail at my required maintenance and then need to buy more expensive JD parts. You have saved my rear in more ways than one. Thank you!

Hi, What a great video, very informative and excellent presentation, I am a little embarrassed to say that I have about 400 hours on my Kioti CK 35 and have up until now only greased the zerks, that I can see. I probably over grease the tractor and Walker mower, have thought should I be doing something else, now I will try to do the right thing by the pto shaft as well. Thank you very much for taking the time to create this video, and as Tim Sawyer said “Thank you sir, for your service to the tractor community in Australia”. Hopefully I haven’t damaged anything because of my ignorance. Have a great weekend.

Have learned that a rag with a bit of diesel helps to remove all grease within the U-joint area: and also cleaning up the two half of the PTO shaft. The the shaft are ready for lubrication. For the slip collar they are prone to getting misshape when dropped onto the tow bar. Yup they do slip from our hands at time. A large snap ring holds the collar in place. It is my winter repair project. Keeping the spring loaded collar sprayed with PB Blaster on a regular basis helps reduce the effort to make the connection. Some may not like the idea of diesel to clean these but after many products falling short of their advertisement, it works for me. I simply let the rags dry out over time outside and reuse them until it's time for disposal at your local auto shop or wherever they can be disposed of. Thanks for the demo.....well done illustrating the two kinds.

Those are the exact words I used (@#!$%) while trying to remove my own green PTO shaft shield. So much so, I thought, surely there must have been a recall and a replacement part issued. Instead the dealer (I’m pretty sure we have the same chipper) referred me to your video! I had tried everything: Just as you did, I tried rotating it working one screwdriver; inserting 3 separate screwdrivers while working one and pulling on the shield with the other; ditto, but this time twisting instead of turning; enlisting my wife to “man” the other two screwdrivers with me on the 3rd and pulling; then her pulling…. The result? The (@#!$%) thing has been sitting on my workbench for two weeks, shielded and undefeated. Every couple of days I get up enough confidence to try again, only to be vanquished from my own workshop! If you weren’t half a continent away I’d ask if you made house calls. However, armed with your video and the knowledge those end shields indeed do come off, and by way of a pulling force and not twisting motion, I’ll try again. (Gulp.) Finally, like another viewer noted, thank you for mentioning the needle attachment for grease gun. I had never heard of such a thing and just assumed the plastic “nipples” were further evidence of Chinese engineering prowess…. Best. Joe

Hi,I've been subscribed for a while now, and have a question. But first off I want to say how much I love details in your videos ie the high quality sound and the music. You must be a musician or in the entertainment world. My question is about the pin on my pto coupler fell out and I can't figure out how to get it back in. Should I just buy another coupler end?
@DIYMyWay
@DIYMyWay 2 года назад
Hi Gary! Thank you for be a subscriber and for the encouraging words. While I do play guitar and piano, I’m not a professional musician or in the entertainment world. I’m assuming you are talking about the pin you push to release the coupler from the PTO shaft. If so, there should have been a spring that went with it. If you don’t have the spring for it then you might as well buy a replacement coupler end. If you do have the spring then it’s a matter of finding out how the pin is retained. Could be a spring clip or another pin that goes in perpendicularly to the release pin. I’d really have to see it to figure it out. I’m elsewhere on the planet right now and can’t look at mine to be of further help. When I get home I’ll try to remember to check mine to see I if I can help. Thanks for watching!

Perfect instructions; my PTO shaft is now clean and happy. Question for you--my PTO shaft does not appear to have shear bolts. It does have split pins at each end, connecting the U-joint to the shaft. Are those split pins possibly designed to function as shear pins? Thanks much!
@DIYMyWay
@DIYMyWay 2 года назад
Glad to hear it, Bianca! No, from your description those pins aren’t shear pins. If this shaft is for your flail mower, it may not have a shear pin because your flail mower may have a slip clutch or has a belt drive that can supply the slippage needed to protect your tractor’s PTO.

@@DIYMyWay that makes perfect sense. Yes, it is for my flail mower, which has a belt drive. Thank you!

My post hole digger has those roll pins, and they keep the shaft from coming off in case the shear pin fails.

Great video! My issue is I cannot get the pot shaft yoke on my 47" snowblower to release and lock on to the tractor's drive shaft. I've lubed it, cleaned it, hit it with a rubber hammer, nothing. The collar retracted when I took it off the tractor's pto stub but now I cannot get it to lock back on when trying to put it back on. Any advice?

Thanks! Those collars can be a pain for sure. Make sure you have the front ring of the collar pulled all the way back while sliding it on. Good luck!

What are your thoughts on using silicone or graphite spray on the telescoping parts of the shaft instead of Lucas grease? Thanks!

I have never heard of anything other than grease used for lubricating PTO shafts so I’m sticking with grease. Thanks for watching!

Great video, I kept shearing Grade 2 bolts like crazy. Went Grade 5 no issues. John Deere salesman said the 5 would still shear without really doing any damage as did the lead service tech. Just my opinion. To each their own. Grade 2 just too weak
@DIYMyWay
@DIYMyWay Год назад
Thanks! After five years, I’m still on the original sheer bolt and don’t know whether is a grade 2 or grade 5.

Any tricks for removing the transmission PTO protective cap on new kubota 4060?

Hi Eric! I’m not familiar with the 4060, but I can tell you that my PTO came with a rubber cover that slides off and I keep it greased to make sure it comes off easily. Thanks for watching!

My BUSHHOG PTO shaft has been sticking in cold weather so I have trouble extending it to hook up to the PTO. I pulled it apart and will clean and grease per your video. What grease do you recommend for freezing temps. Also, how do I clean the inside of the female shaft? Ed
@DIYMyWay
@DIYMyWay Год назад
Hi Ed! Sorry to hear that! Since I live in a warm climate, I have not researched cold weather grease, but I'm sure you can Google it and find one. As for cleaning the inside of the female shaft section, Id use a gun cleaning rod with the biggest brush you can find, like for a 10 gauge shotgun. Soak it with Kerosene or diesel fuel. Good luck!

@@DIYMyWay Great thought! I will do that next Time. I was able to clean the outside of the male portion with deisel fuel and pour a little into the female half while turning it. That worked well. Thanks again.

Any idea why on a compact tiller the shaft rear safety tube s hook has bent and came loose twice? Hasn't broke plastic eye on tube and rotating by hand in neutral there is no binding
@DIYMyWay
@DIYMyWay 2 года назад
Hi 002! That is a mystery indeed! The only thing I can think of is part of the chain might have gotten caught by the universal joint of the shaft and yanked the s hook out. BTW, just 005 more and you’ll be 007!

What type of grease? And what kind of oil and oil dispenser did you use? Took tractor over for an Ill family member so I know it’s a rookie question

I used Lucas Red N Tacky grease. The oil was a light weight machine oil like 3-in-1 and the dispenser was my dad’s old oiler dating back to the 50’s or 60’s. Thanks for watching!

Hi there , I have 2018 John Deere 2025R tractor . I have the brush hog driveline stuck on my PTO shaft . Does anybody have an idea how to get driveshaft off ? I tried spraying WD40 into quick release yoke I think there’s 3 ball bearings that might be rusted . Still stuck please any ideas will be appreciated .
@1925sk
@1925sk Год назад
Yep, that happened to a couple of mine from letting them sit out in the weather. Fortunately they were off the tractor. You might try diesel fuel or something stronger than WD40.
