Sounds like it only takes a few minutes then, awesome ! I was thinking that the pin had to be driven out and I was worried about damaging the charging tube. Thanks for the info brother.
I went a different route and if you're not a stickler for keeping the original look I find it changes the charging handle performance like night and day. Like you my hands would slip off when I actuated the cam on the charging handle. So I made a handle from a pvc dowel and cut the bottom square so it would fit in the top of the charging handle and then put a screw in the bottom so it wouldn't come lose. My description sucks.
I've seen 3 different types. The wide handguard in this video has a slot and retainer in the front of it to hold a bipod. The legs nest in the grooves on the side. Here is a link. www.robertrtg.com/store/pc/HK-BIPOD-30p1.htm I've seen a different style for the slim handguards that clamps over the trunnion behind the handguard. Then I've seen people adapt Harris style bipods themselves. Google "G3 Bipod" plenty of results.
Cont. But I can PM pics if you're interested in what I did. Charging from prone is also much easier (as in actually possible). It's definitely a function over form mod but the piece of mind that I won't fumble the charging handle is worth it. Plus your fabrication skills may produce more pleasing results aesthetically.
