I have an original HK 91 bought in the mid 70s that is all new HK. Additionally, I have managed to acquire dirt cheap magazines in quantity. I came upon a deal with another gun with a second german scope mount, a 22 conversion kit, two cases, another 8 magazines and a bayonet and mount etc for $ 1000.00. I sold the gun, kept all the accessories. I had the dealer that I sold the second HK 91 to order me an HK 94, which was still available. The HK 94 served as a host gun to be married to a legally registered auto sear. S&H Arms pieced all of this together and did the work to create an HK MP 5 that I owned for 10 years. I also had them include a AWC MK 9 suppressor. This gun shot fantastic but eventually I sold that since I thought that I was moving to a non NFA state
I purchased my GIRail a few weeks ago. First thing I noticed were the very high quality tig welds. Never seen a firearm with that many welds. So far accuracy is good, have only shot 200m. No malfunctions at all. Thanks for the thorough review.
Thanks man, just took mine out again last weekend. shot about 200 surplus rounds. worked like a top again. im over 1000 rounds and still only that one malfunction so far.
This was a great review. I had no idea about the name change of the GI model. Regarding the wide handguard, yeah it can be a pain (probably almost impossible just going off internet pics) to find a matching shade of green for the buttstock you have. I will say that with the wide handguard you're never going to have to worry about your hands getting burned or the handguard getting too hot to hold like with the slim handguard. One other thing you mention that I found interesting--how the rifle you have is noticeably harder to cock than some of the other PTRs you've handled. Although how "hard" or how "easy" it is to cock these guns can be a subjective thing, I wonder if part of the reason is due to the older style surplus metal cocking handle on the gun? The reason I mention this is that years ago I had installed one of those older steel cocking handles on a rifle with wood furniture after removing the green plastic handle that was on there. I remember having a notably harder time unfolding the handle and cocking the bolt back now that the steel cocking handle was on there. I'd say it might have been my imagination, but I do remember when I put the green plastic charging handle back on again, the rifle was definitely easier to cock again. I'm led to believe that there is probably something about the shape or contour of the older steel cocking handle that probably is less comfortable or ergonomic for the average person compared to the green plastic or black rubber handles that came later (even though the steel handles admittedly are stronger than the plastic ones). Anyway, I don't know that the handle by itself is necessarily what is making the rifle harder to cock than it should be, or that you'd be interested in swapping out the steel handle on your rifle with one of the plastic or rubber surplus ones anyway, but I thought my past experience might be helpful. Take care.
Yeah i actually have a wide hand guard now, did a follow video on it. The difference is night and day honestly. And your assessment seems to be correct, but ive even messed with rubber ones that werent any easier to cock as well. It seems to be all over the place. But i will probably swap it out for a rubber one eventually. Thanks for the input and watching.
FYI, you don't need the sight tool to change between the drum sight presets. Just twist. The sight tool is for adjusting the elevation for sighting in.
MFI makes some good "bolt-on" rails. But I've had numerous issues with the top of my 2012 PTR-91GI made in CT on the old machinery and has the poly lower. The top of my receiver where the bolt-on rail attaches is warped or tilted slightly on mine. I had to "glue" the MFI rail to the receiver to keep the screws from loosening as I shoot. You're right, the steel rail welded on top is a more convenient option if you feel the need for optics. The claw locks are high-buck. And I've HEARD the individual feet need to be filed down to custom fit the stamped steel bumps in the rifle's receiver. This seems plausible since I did have to alter the feet of the first MFI rail (long version)I mounted and had issues with. It ended up being twisted permanently. I sent it back. The second MFI rail I got was their short low-profile and isnt really suitable for anything that uses a larger mount foot or multiple scope rings. And There really arent any dots/scopes I've located that will co-witness perfectly with the G3 irons. The Sig Romeo5 with the low mount is fairly close and deletes the high-rise mount, so your dot isn't so high.
I was gonna get a claw mount at some point, but the price made me weary, and i was unaware of the need to file down the feet thanks for mentioning that. I bought the gun keeping in mind it probably wouldn't be easy to mount anything modern sight wise on it. I probably never will mount anything on it honestly, other than maybe the claw. Was unaware of bolt on rails for it though. i guess ultimately if you want to mount something on it, getting a different ptr with the rail already attached is the best way to go.
Yep. there are options, but not many good ones. Really, the king of easy customization is the AR...been in active duty use for 50 years. But I still love the PTR/HK91 rifles.
Keep feeding it, the action will loosen up over time. I have one and it is a bad ass rifle once you break it in. Put a good optic on it and wear battle gloves.
Hey James, I have about 300 rounds through mine and it hasn't loosened up at all. About how many rounds did yours take? What do you use to lube the bolt and other parts? Thanks.
Guns and Games honestly as someone who has an A3S you don’t want the collapsible stock. It looks cool, but it beats up your shoulder if you’re actually going to shoot it.
@@scooter4849 4 months later and I still haven't shot it yet. I bought 3 boxes of ammo awhile ago but I haven't been able to find anymore. But it did go through some changes. First I wanted to make it kinda tactical So I put a midwest handgaurd on it and a claw mount but I honestly didn't like it like that. So I decided I was gonna make it look like a g3a4. I found a wide handgaurd last month but now all that's left is a retractable stock but that appears to be unobtanium at the moment
@@scooter4849 They are very antigun. There are also policies against linking to websites that sell most firearms and many other things. Probably shouldn't even say the website during the video. I recommend looking up the YT firearms rules. A quick search should find it.
@@scooter4849 The way I read it, can't even say the name of website, because it prohibits "promoting" these sites. Good video BTW. I have a PTR 91 and a couple c308s. I got the C308s when they were blowing them out and after rebate I paid 350 each for them. I had to tweak one of them to get it to function properly.
I have about 300 rounds through mine and it hasn't loosened up at all either. About how many rounds did yours take? What do you use to lube the bolt and other parts? Thanks.
Is the lower steel or polymer? You said it was surplus, so I assume it's steel, but I just want to make sure. Also, was the color listed as "parkerized" or "parkerized grey"? I'm interested in getting one and putting wood furniture on it, but I feel like that would match better with black instead of grey.
@@scooter4849 Wow, thanks for the quick reply. Good to know. I've been looking around and some sites say they have it in black, or just parkerized. Either way I suppose I could send it out to be painted. Anyway, thanks again and great review.
