Bosko Video was a video company formed by animation buff Dave Butler (1944-2014) around 1989. He strove to present high-quality transfers (from 16mm prints) of the Superman, Private Snafu, and early Warner Brothers cartoons, along with other public domain titles, offering an alternative to the atrocious-quality collections that you entertainingly detailed in your video. At the time, the Bosko releases were appreciated by serious cartoon aficionados but the comparatively high prices for the tapes limited their appeal to the general public. Consumers seemed content to pick up the much cheaper mass-produced collections, regardless of how sloppy the video quality and the packaging designs were. I think many of these cheapie tapes were purchased as gifts for children, so I suppose adults felt that the novelty of watching cartoons on video was good enough to satisfy kids, regardless of how wildly inappropriate the material may have been. I can imagine the jaw-dropping reactions from unsuspecting parents who decided to show ALL THIS AND RABBIT STEW at a children's birthday party.

@@71.218-westshed honestly unsure, I had thought about that. However what makes it seem odd is it’s just that audio without any changes for quite a while and it happens after a long amount of time on a silent blue screen. I feel like if it was just audio from another short then you would at least hear the music change or a sound effect or something in there. It’s a mystery I guess 🤷🏻‍♂️

Great channel and video man. Here in the UK we used to get loads of tapes like this, often sold in baskets at supermarkets. My brother and I (now in our 40's) had a 3 hour tape that had a complete random mix of cartoons on it from transformers (the first episode!) to betty boop and a random Halloween cartoon. True classic time. Subbed

Also that tape is absolutely wild, I can’t believe they got away with just a whole transformers episode on there, there is no way that was anywhere near public domain back then. That Elmer Fudd tape you grew up with is Pirated because it contains An Itch in Time which is still copyrighted.

What I came for are the lies on the VHS Covers, being the “Superior” Quality part. I prefer cartoon restorations from official DVDs better than Public Domain Cartoon VHS tapes and DVDs.

As someone who collects these tapes, this was a great watch! 10:10 That is what we VHS collectors call a "Strange VHS Ending", these public domain tapes (and sometimes official licensed tapes) tend to have weird crap like that at the end of the tape that ISN'T just a plain quiet static screen. 11:45 If you thought that looks bad, there's another Porky Pig VHS tape from the same company that looks as bad! In the other release, Porky looks like a bootleg Piggly Wiggly wearing a hat and holding a pitch fork LMAO🤣 13:05 I used to have a copy of that tape that also was written in Sharpie and had the painter's tape also (but mine didn't have the bigger reels like yours). I have two other tapes from the same company that actually steals the tape master from other companies (yes I uploaded them haha)! 15:52 That tape looks like it got taped over after you bought it (the content looks newer than the tape itself). The reason is that most of these companies forget to remove the recording tab and thus making us accidentally taping over them. To cure my OCD, I remove every single one I have.

I think that Bugs Bunny with the blocks is from Canada, and Heckle and Jeckle is from Star Classics from California. I have a tape from them called the Jackie Robinson Story, and they are also known for putting out tapes in big cardboard cases.

Oh I remember watching those VHS compilations in the 90s! I don't even know if they were legit or pirate copies, but most of them had cartoons which were very much not public domain, like the Chuck Jones era of Looney Tunes. And I don't think we ever had the reused tapes thing in my country, let alone the adult film thing. The worst case scenario was to buy or rent a cartoon with some godawful bootleg dub!

19:16 HOLY SHIT I own this DVD still..I believe it was a gift from a friend of my parents?? I never really watched it unless there wasnt anything to watch or at least halfway through before I got bored. It def wasn't my first choice but it was entertaining depending on the day. It ended up living between DVDs as like you said wasn't a proper DVD case more like an envelope.

The first 2 are clips from Hanna Barbera’s Johnny Quest, and 2:06 is one of the Superman cartoons by Fleischer studios “the mummy strikes” from 1943. Also, thank you SO much! I’m happy to hear you enjoyed the video, much appreciated!
