It was, actually...have you read his first autobiography, "No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs", by any chance? He regularly mentions his Irish roots in the book & mentions this song & its origins within it, as well as his love of the NHS - as he wouldn't have survived from severe case of spinal meningitis when he was just a kid - & Arsenal FC, which is also my lifelong football club!! An amazing guy is Mr Lydon, although he can occasionally be a tad contradictory & very inflammatory...once again, just like me!

"He has this song 'Rise' which I used to show my clients all the time when I was starting an assertiveness training with them. I'd put on Johny Rotten's 'Rise', and the line in there is 'Anger is an Energy', and he's got these unbelievably intense eyes... He could channel that like almost no one I've ever seen. He'd get that anger built up inside him, and then it was completely under control. And he expressed it in his music. It was absolutely captivating. Unbelievably charismatic. I really liked his music. Raw anger." - JBP

When John Lydon was seven years old, he contracted spinal meningitis which put him in hospital for a year, left him in a coma that totally wiped his memory and damaged his vision, leaving him with his trademark stare. When he was well enough to go home, the doctor told his parents that he should not be allowed to relax or become lethargic and that they should constantly annoy him and make him angry all the time. When they questioned the reasoning behind this advice, the doctor replied, "Anger is an energy."

well said, funny how many of those who stood against him back then love him now and claim they always have. There's a title for those people, I call them hypocrites. Rude and irreverent they called him, truthful and genuine, I'd say. Just look into his eyes during the lines "I could be right I could be wrong" He was always right, roflmao, he's just humble and clever enough to offer the possibility of an alternate opinion. So make your own minds up...arrogant or moral, anti-establishment or pro democracy? I love him now as much as back then in a Tom MacDonald vibe. I'd much rather they were schooling our kids than any politician you could name alive today, cos they'd learn morals good ethics, open-minded thought and decent values instead of greed, number one first and selfish "I'm all right Jack" doctrine.

The Pistols were great, PiL less great .. but this song was maybe the best thing Lydon ever recorded. As a record it was more accessible to most people. Ginger Baker played the percussion, Steve Vai did the guitar parts (worth noting 'cos it's such a great sounding record). Terrific production too.
@btisdall
@btisdall 7 лет назад
Oooh I disagree totally. The Pistols were good but their place in history is as much to do with being at the forefront of an explosive cultural revolution as their music. PiL were *far* more interesting sonically from the get-go.

Andrew, I was reflecting how beautifully arranged the track is when I read your comment - to hear Ginger Baker was involved - wow! Now there is a master of his trade. Have you watched Beware of Mr Baker? It's mind blowing. Thanks for sharing the info bud.

SAME. I remember when he stated in an interview that this stare of his stems from the year-long, almost fatal case of spinal meningitis from which he suffered when he was only 7, the result of having consumed dirty water...it left him with permanently damaged eyesight & curvature of the spine...but I have also heard him, in at least one interview, mention this stare as his means of looking deep within the eyes of others, in order to try to see whether or not they were/are being honest with him, as he was so incredibly sick & helpless during his illness & he found that this "stare" worked at such times...strange but true!
