If you let bullies stop you from expressing yourself, they control you. Instead of suppressing yourself, respond with grace, dignity and a peaceful heart. Here's how I responded to a viewer's negative, mildly threatening comment on my last video.

Great video Laurie. I was badly shamed by one of my parents when I was 5 and this feeling of shame, blame & guilt has never left me. I am 44 now. It's true what you say: If we don't deal with these memories & patterns, they are going to rule our lives. Sending love, Anne xx 🥰❤️

Thank you, Anne. Those early experiences never really leave us, do they? Even when the emotional impact is lessened, that first cut runs deep. The key is recognizing when we're responding out of those old patterns instead of who we are now. That's why dealing with those memories and patterns is so important, as you said. I'm sending love right back at you! xo 💞

Hi Laurie! I always remember this line cuz it’s so true, “Hurt people hurt people”. Sending best wishes 🥰.

Thank you - that's a good line to remember. It really is true, and it increases compassion and empathy.

Ugh, I'm so sorry someone did that to you! I've never understood why people need to shame others for the choices they make. Honestly, if I watch a video and don't like the content, I just stop watching and move along. You cannot possibly please everyone, and every video won't resonate with every person - that's ok! You keep doing you and talking about what is important to you - you have such good wisdom to share. And btw, as a woman over 50, that last video was really interesting. Hugs!

Agreed. If I'm not into someone's video/movie/store/perspective, I move along. And perhaps create something I DO want to get into! I'm still grateful for this guy's comment, though - I have to learn to accept all types of feedback. Put my big girl panties on and deal with it 😊

So many things hang on us as we walk through life. Some are harder than others to shake off. Thanks for sharing.

Yes. Ever since I learned that our body holds on to trauma even when our brains don't remember, I pay much closer attention to my emotional reactions to events and people. There IS a logic to my responses even when I don't recognize it! In the same way, there is a logic to the responses of others. The guy who criticized me has his reasons. Of course, this doesn't mean we can insult or cast shadows on people we find offensive. What it means to me is that he's just another wounded foot solider doing the best he can to make his way through the world. It is SO freeing to see us all this way! I love it. 💗

The hardest thing for kind people to do is realize that u don’t want him to follow u! You want him to unfollow u! Accept it! And yes u have the right to delete it! Anyway I’m glad u grew from this. Im a lot like u and it triggers me when I see people being cruel to others. God bless ❤

The world is made up of so many kind folks, and then there are those who slip through the crack and are just mad at the world. A few negative comments can't hurt, and as you say, can be a learning experience, but when ONE person keeps making negative comments, they now become trolls, and there's no place in this world for trolls. Delete them and get on with your walk, literally and figuratively.

I love this video. I so badly want to succeed on RU-vid, but I'm held back by fear of being publicly humiliated. I'm going to sit with your message for a while. I think it will really help me, so thank you.

Thank you for your honesty! I'm curious - what does "succeed on RU-vid" mean to you? How will you know if you've succeeded? It's important to have realistic expectations, and to focus on your reason for making videos. It's hard to stay focused on being true to you - every time I upload a video, I remind myself I'm doing this for me and my personal and professional growth. Not to attract likes or subscribers, but to share what I'm learning. I'm currently measuring my success by my ability NOT edit my words, sentences and thoughts while I'm recording a video. I have a very bad habit of starting a sentence, fearing it'll be confusing or dumb, then starting over. Later when I'm editing the video I find that those "false starts" were actually better than when I re-started the sentence! So to me success is getting through a complete sentence while filming 🙂 That's a goal I'm failing at, and that I can easily see if/when I do succeed. My current goal is also completely independent of the actions of others, which means that comments like the one I referred to in this video are meaningless. Sure, they'll probably still sting. They may trigger shame and humiliation. But every time I work through my shame and humiliation, I get stronger, wiser and more compassionate. Autistic Traveller, may you face your fears and make videos anyway. May your experiences with disgruntled viewers be few and far between. And above all, may you decide what success means to you without relying on what others are doing on RU-vid! With love, Laurie

This is such a good and helpful video. I think as RU-vidrs we need to be prepared ahead of time for haters. Because we know there are people out there who don’t seem to have anything better to do than be nasty to people online. It’s not really about us it’s just them and their own issues.

You’re being honest in your videos and you have a right to free speech,, hurting anybody wasn’t your intention, you were explaining how you felt about your relationship and sex as a middle aged woman, sounds like he needs to lighten up and stop telling others what to do ,, best wishes, Lisa

I am so sorry I did not comment on your last video on intimacy. It brought up many truths that most are uncomfortable to look at more closely. I wish I had watched this video on shame many years ago; it would have enriched my life. I will rewatch; thank you.

Thank you for your sweet comment. You didn't feel led to comment on my last video, and that's cool! We can only do what feels right and true to us in that moment. Sometimes it's hard to know what to say or how to say it - I totally get it. No worries, angel. I'm glad you're here 💞
