Over two days in June 2024 I captured footage along the world famous Puffing Billy Railway, located east of Melbourne in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges.
This narrow gauge line runs from Belgrave to Gembrook traversing steep hilly terrain, crossing many bridges and curves through native forest as well as passing through several small settlements. Over the days I was there trains ran as far as Lakeside from Belgrave, with three return trips a day.
Locomotives featured in this video were regauged South African Garratt NG129 and Victorian Railways NA classes 12A and 7A. Due to a loco shortage 7A was put into service despite its unpainted appearance. On the second day NG129 wore a headboard in preparation for the night lights excursions which ran nightly from Lakeside to Gembrook.
Sit back and relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of the Puffing Billy Railway on a couple of cold winter days!
