I've been asked a number of times why I don't go into a dead hang for pull ups and why I only bring the bar down it to my chin when I overhead press.
This video explains it well.

The best combo of exercises on the planet for torso. Pull-ups/standing overhead presses hit all the upper body muscles.

Do you think it's adequate enough for back thickness (lats, erectors, traps etc) as well? I know with these the OHP hits front & side delts, triceps, upper chest, abs & maybe lower back & chins is; lats, rear delts, bicep, abs & part of the pec. I want to do these 2 lifts for upper body for a minimalist routine with a squat variation. My concern is developing thickness in the back as well as its a weakness. I have very limited time & energy, so trying to get the most bang for buck here.

Just want to say thanx for all you putting out there..has helped me loads and the more I learn from you the more I realize it doesn't have to be so strict as other youtubers would claim that it has to be..you got where you got by taking a more relaxed mindset of things which I'm sure helps a lot of people instead of a rigid training protocol which can be intimidating..Anyway just want to say thanx..

I think being to rigid when it comes to exercises can also cause injuries..You have to be open to the idea that you can adjust an exercise like you have to suit your particular needs and limitations….Awesome stuff brother. 5:02

Thank you very much mate. Yeah adjusting exercises to how your body responds really makes a big difference.

Good stuff! The Spinal extension absolutely kills me in the OHP too. To the point where I haven’t programmed them heavy in a long time.
@LairdRoss

Yeah a lot of people suffer this. To the chin removes this a lot and you will find upper body development continues

What about trap bar /hex bar OHP? No need to move the head
@ThunderbackOG
@ThunderbackOG Год назад
I never had a problem with the OHP causing pain. But I will try the "to the chin" variant, because of possible spine issues developing.

Keep doing it the way you are. If you ever run into issues later on you have a option

Nice. Do you do any other supersets ? I’m doing floorpress with Lat pulldowns but want to do more from different angles

About your bench press video, you recomend 2 days, one heavy and one lighter, both days you perform a type of OHP? Do you keep 100 total reps in each workout? If not, what way would you recomend to program the ohp to help the bench press?
@LairdRoss
@LairdRoss Год назад
On the day I have heavy bench press I usually do db OHP and on the days of light bench press its Barbell OHP

What about trap bar /hex bar OHP? I’m tempted to try it. Neutral grip and no need to move the head or arch lower back

Just want to ask you what you think of doing overhead press with your one leg behind and the other a little in front..basically like the jerk at the end of the clean and jerk stance before standing up straight to help keeping your back from over extenting..ive tried it in the past and it definitely works but not sure of the carry over to other parts of the body. If you can get back to me id appreciate it loads..if it works it could take problems away from a lot of people..

I think it depends on the individual. I wouldn't do it because it wouldn't feel right

You're a big guy and your strong but you'd be stronger if you slowed down did fewer reps and did them with better technique. It hurts your shoulder because you've worked up to a reasonably heavy working set weight with terrible technique and range of motion.
@LairdRoss
@LairdRoss Год назад
You know absolutely nothing at all mate especially when it comes to stability of the shoulder 7nder load. This is absolutely perfect for bench press and shoulder health. This isn't a mobility exercise.

@Garage Gym - Laird Ross I lifted under instruction of an olympic weight lifting coach for 4 years, worked for a gym with many trainers for years, and I lived next to IFBB executive Wayne Demila for have my younger life, meeting guys like Farigno, Roby Robinson, Frank Zane, etc when they stayed in his home visiting for shows and photoshoots. But yeah I could be wrong but the studies also say you increase strength by working through the full range.
