In this episode we're going to get the outhouse built, pull a stump, and live it up amongst the hoards of mosquitoes and deer flies! Great times at the wall tent camp! I also talk about off-grid portable power, and pick some spruce tips for a perfume I want to make. So come along with us, sit around the fire, and enjoy watching someone else work! Haha

Years ago I made a shower out of an old hul-a-hoop. I hung a shower curtain on it and suspended it from a tree limb. I used an inner tube for a water container. It warmed up fast in the sun. The biggest problem I had was it getting to hot. I would just fill it partially and then add cold water after it heated until I got the temperature right. Love your videos. Makes me wish I was 50 years younger. I always dreamed of building a log cabin. The closest I ever got was a 8x8 chicken house made from landscape timbers. By-pass surgery and 2 strokes have made me an armchair participant.

One of the best things to do to keep your outhouse from stinking is to put a lid on the seat and vent it from the hole through the roof with a chimney. It pulls the methane out through the top.

With a pick-nick table you can put one or two mosquito coils under the table. If it's not too windy this creates a kind of cloud that envelopes the people sitting at the table and makes writing, reading, eating, tea and coffee, etc. more manageable and enjoyable. Put a stainless steel or china small plate in the outhouse with a coil a lighter and a pair of small scissors. You can light the coil when you enter and after your business you can cut off the very end of the coil with the scissors. Voila. Keep a long stick outside the door of the outhouse so that when you open it you can check for rattlers. Hanging hooks both outside and inside for jackets, hats, tools, flashlights, etc. Get and keep an umbrella in the house for those trips to the outhouse in the rain. Be safe, be well, be happy.

The required court layout for a game is two stakes fastened securely in the ground 40 feet apart. The stakes should be of iron or soft steel one inch in diameter protruding 15 inches from the ground, each leaning approximately 3 inches ( 12-deg. from vertical) toward the opposite stake. Enjoyed watching! Love the rocking chairs!

Camped on Lake George in NY for about 1971 thru 1998. Never in that time would we put soap in the lake. Totally against the regulations. We bought sun showers at A sports store. We could 2 of us take a hot shower and rinse with a5 gal shower. I have Two of them in my emergency kit for use in hurricanes. While we were camping on LG. A local town shut down their water treatment plant for modifications. They tested the Lake water for bacteria and purity and fed the Bolton Landing NY town needs without treatment. The Lake water was purer than the water from the water treatment plant. Everyone obeyed the “nothing disposed into the Lake”. Regulations. Still clean today. JoeB
@SWAMPHUNTER644
@SWAMPHUNTER644 3 года назад
@@josephburkhalter5105 I agree if it was a water supply lake or a campground. That little bit of soap would have about zero effect on water quality in most lakes. Certainly not much more harm than washing up without soap or swimming and much less than the effect of wildlife. Water quality was my profession for many years. I don't advocate ignoring posted regulations.

OUTHOUSE PRO TIP: Cut the bottom out of a 5-gal. pail and seal it to the hole. Add a vent hole through the back wall and just under the seat deck. Offending odors will rise and find their way to that bent hole while the bucket "chute" will both block odors and prevent urine soaked wood. It also lets you clean down there when needed. I have pictures of mine if I can find an email for you.

Another suggestion for the privy-in a back corner of the seat board,cut a round hole-2" or so and a corresponding, with a piece of pplastic pipe the size of the hole-pipe determines the size of the hole of course hole in the roof, install the pipe as a chimney to the chamber,below with the bottom of the pipe flush with the bottom of the seat board to allow easy venting of fumes(a little raised box for fumes to go kinto ,and rhen upthe chimney might even improve on things(seal where it goes through the roof of course,makes a big difference-where I often camp in the wilderness of the Adirondack mountains,out houses are all there are,and they usually reek-one year someone had made that modification to the privy on my site , -no stink)it also had a regular toilet seat assembly,with tight lid, which kept the fumes below,and flowing up the chimney=what a difference !=later the state discovered the non regulation mods,and undid them(rather than learning and improving the other sites ) and back to the good old stench it was ! ,another thought(gonna sound like a safety Nazi,but oh well...) be carefull of climbing on chairs and such,falls will happen with no warning,and can be surprisingly serious-(I lived through fractures of c-1,c-2, and the connection to skull from an infection rather than a fall,and I can say with surety that pain is nothing you want to try,I'm fine now no pain,no problem ,neck doesn't move much,but a small price to pay to be here-hey my mother used to tease me as a kid that if my head wasn't screwed on I would lose it,were she still with us I could tell her-"No problem now ,it is screwed on -with titainium even !) you probably could do without the 190 k price to get put back together, that process was interesting, but once down that road was quite enough, then 21/2 months in a nursing home for therapy, etc,6months to go-2 year total healing-and I should be as healed as it's going to get, still have the metal ring, and the bolts that were drilled into my head for the halo as keepsakes, to remember the fun.I can say to anyone that might be facing such an installation, that a halo isn't (in my experience) that bad, inconvenient, and clumsy perhaps, but not nearly as bad as they look although I was quite happy when it came off - I want to have a hole drilled into one of the pins(bolts) to wear as a necklace..

I mentioned this on Bushradical, but I have built a total of 1 outhouse and I did think of the dark, so I used a skylight I had as scrap, the pee shield, had a scrap of aluminum flashing. Didn't think of the TP issue but I added dolomite lime in the pit and that keeps the odor down as well as promoted breakdown of the organics. It works for disposal of bodies as well, I read once. A idea I read about for TP disposal was using a lined plastic bin like a tall kitchen trash can with soil in about the bottom 25% with worms in it. You toss the TP in there and the worms make it into more soil. after it fills up you can use the soil where ever you need on your property. The person that suggested this said in their experience after it got going, the can always smelled of fresh dug dirt, not poop.

Hi. Retired soil scientist in the Upper Peninsula. That "hardpan" layer is what is known as ortstein. It is the cemented suboil layer common in UP sandy soils known as spodosols. Very colorful layers due to the leaching of iron, aluminum, manganese and organic matter that accumulates in this layer. Dug thousands of pits in it over my career and never got tired of the cool colors.

Have you considered fogging the area of the tree line just beyond where you are working. Also, if you wrap the chain around several different places the rotten stump will come out faster; but don't do that unless the stumps are rotten. As you are so far back in the woods I would recommend that you have 2 chains in your truck at all times as well a 5-10 ton come-a -long. Should there be a very heavy rain you might need it ti get get out and back home. Another trick is to bring a five gallon plastic bucket and put it by the tent. When ever you find a stone or rock you don't want, put it in the bucket. On the way home stop and empty the bucket in the low spots, when you get home do the same and bring the bucket back. It's surprising how fast the low spots will get filled up with free unwanted rocks or stone.

yes they use to work good, until they banned them here in Canada, i still have mine but you cant buy the product to fill it, in the old days we use to drill an tap the muffler on the lawn mower and hook a copper tube to it and to a small tank, cant remember what we put in the tank back then, but you cant buy it any more, and like any thing else, only worked when no wind

We finally found our piece of property too. Just spent the weekend out there, our first camp overnight, with the bugs, the rain and the dirt. It was heaven. You are so right about an outhouse being a unique building. We’ve never built one so I stopped last week at a builder Amish mans place of business and ordered one, on skids so we can move it as needed. We had to buy metal fire rings because our property has not one rock on it. Lol. Can’t find one anywhere. I’m not big on bug spray or chemicals so I’ve learned over the years that mosquitoes hate flying over ground that you sprinkle granulated garlic on. I buy it in a big pound container at the restaurant food store. Coming home today was bittersweet but that hot shower was the best thing in life! Enjoy.

Girl in the Woods I just watched Dave’s video. I’ve already bought the clear plastic roofing and it’s loaded on the trailer to go to the builder tomorrow. I bought a whole “case” of it for my rabbit hutch, the outhouse and a sheet or two in the chicken coop. I guess I need to go rock picking. 🤗

I hadn't watched all of your previous video and hadn't seen the ending. Very sorry to hear about your brother. I lost my brother almost 2 years ago and just recently found out my other brother needs a double bypass heart surgery. Life is precious. I enjoy yours and Daves channel and use a lot of my favorite off grid channels on here to escape from lifes hardships. I recently bought acteage in Northern Wisconsin and in the middle of building my first little off grid cabin. Thanks for the videos!

I absolutely love how *stoked* you get over the simple things in life! Yeah, you know, like an outhouse and the proper build & use thereof! I grew up with outhouses at summer camps *(one was a three holer) and what you said rang so true! My only additions would be: (1) build in two framed & multi-layered screened air flow spaces - one about a foot above the bottom of the door & one up near the top of the back wall and (2) keep a pail of ashes in there and add a scoop after each dump. Once we did that to ours, it was more comfortable for those longer visits in the heat of summer and the odor was reduced even more. Some of the units never had to be relocated because breakdown occurred better & quicker.

Lived in the UP 1975-1979 at KISawyer AFB. The UP is my favorite place! It’s my happy place. I have video on my phone of the waves coming in. Avon skin so soft is what we used for mosquitoes. They weren’t that bad though back then. It also rarely got above 80F in the summer. Maybe because we were so close to Lake Superior. We lived on fish. Trout and salmon. Thanks for bringing me back up there with you. I live in Texas right now so I need the break!

when in the woods we never ever bring toilet paper, we only use wash clothes and have a bucket to keeo them clean. in joy another thing you might want to try is when you get to the bottom of your hole we always dig sideways hole about 2 feet and then pack dirt at an angle towards the other hole this way everything rolls away. in joy

My family used to buy the pix coils when we went to the drive in movies when I was a kid. They did not work that well and we still got a lot of insect bites. If you don't perspire heavily like I do then you can try Avon Skin So Soft. You can use it in diluted form on the dog too. Mix 50-50 with water. Another method is Walmart sells oil lanterns in the camping department and citronella oil in the garden department. It helps light up the outside areas and the citronella works against mosquitoes. As for Deer Fly they come in and attack in squadron strength. You could try a mist device to try and control them. If you can find citronella plants in your region you can container grow them. Up north they would die from the cold winters unless you have a greenhouse to keep them warm during winter. Stay healthy and stay safe and keep living your dreams.
