We are back to work on the 2017 GMC Terrain Denali this week. We are going to straighten the center post or B-pillar but even though we get everything lined up and fitting, we will have to replace it. The parts car will come in handy for more than just parts and a place to hoard parts....

I just rewatched this installment of the Terrain. I’ve always been impressed with Scott’s abilities. To me he has taken the purpose of his channel to a new level. All of his work & tireless measuring has him at a machine shop quality level. He does with a frame rack, hammers, tape measures, and his measuring “trammel points” I’ll call it what a highly trained machinist does. I dare say his builds are as close to factory level as humanly possible. I am a broken record, but once again, I’d buy any of his builds sight unseen. He is an amazing craftsman with an eye for detail that many try to achieve over their careers. Scott defines integrity & character. See you on your next installment of whatever project you are working on.

@Channel-gz9hm
@Channel-gz9hm 2 года назад
@@ShainAndrews It's not the delusion that he's the only one that can do anything, it's the fantasy/desire of knowing who's working on your stuff knows what they're doing. The alternative is hoping the person doing the work isn't a scumbag and does know what they're doing so you don't waste vast sums of money and time on a moron. The issue is most people are scumbags and most people don't know what they're doing in any given profession. Put it together and that's the car repair industry.
@vehcor
@vehcor 2 года назад
Sadly the some of the big name shops do the worst work and that is what the industry gets judged by. I see the best work from small independent shops that actually care about the work. Many people just don’t care about anything but how much money and how little work can they do to get it, anymore and it is true about all industries. I’m not special, the world has just lowered the bar so low that doing the right thing makes you look special.
@calholli

@@vehcor meh.. It's just a matter of diminishing returns. You're taking a car with a bent B pillar and turning it into a car that now has a cut up and patched and welded roof, where it didn't even have that problem before-- all just because the new pillar has a few less wrinkles.... Maybe I'm wrong and you're going to magic that thing in there without cutting the roof-- but IMO, there's a point when "fixing it" is no longer about repair and is more of a 'restoration. Neither one is wrong-- I just don't care about things being completely restored. If it's functional and still looks great, then I'm sold. A few scars under the surface don't bother me. We all just have different opinions on what is necessary. Maybe I would think differently if I did this work for a living.

Wow! A panelbeater / car resurrection expert that does not cut corners.....unless they are in the way or he needs them for another project. For that alone, my friend, you should be well rewarded. I have a hobby restoring older cars and have seen some horrors lurking under pretty paintwork, behind interior trim and up inside wheel wells where people do not usually look. The worst filler thickness I have come across to date is nine-sixteenths (14-15mm) and was the reason why the driver's window would not wind all the way down. Ok, the body filler itself wasn't, but the dent it was filling was. It took me more time to strip the bog off the door than it did to fix the dent properly! It's also a constant amazement as to why someone would weld good steel over bad, use three small overlapping patches instead of one butt-jointed panel or just not bother sorting out a wrinkled, warped and stretched inner panel because the outer panel, suspension and underseal disguises it......or just fills in A / B /-C pillars with fibreglass and / or bog, throws a coat of paint at it and calls it done. In some cases these things have been there for may years and in all cases, one decent thump at speed in the right (or wrong - depending on your perspective) place would prove just how weak these points are. As you say, there are reasons why things must be done the RIGHT way and my conscience will not let me put someone's life at risk to save a few bucks. If I would not let one of my kids ride in it (and they BOTH drive now), then it cannot stay bent. So, it's awesome to see the effort you go to in order to make sure anyone is safe in what you repair. With the way cars are put together nowadays with the likes of the windscreen being an integral part of the car's overall strength and rigidity, it certainly makes it a bit trickier..... Enjoying your channel as always and truly appreciate the witty repartee. All the best.

I used to use a die grinder with a carbide bit to grind out spot welds...that way there is never any through hole on the structural panels underneath the panel you are replacing, and the panel you are removing pops off very easily . Of course...it is wise to have a guard on your die grinder, eye protection...and a magnet to get those fine shards of metal ...because boy do they like your fingers!

I've seen another channel take the shortcut that you mentioned with cutting that high strength steel and replacing only part of that section, The only way to do repairs is the right way, like you are doing. That way, in case the vehicle is in another collision, it's factory standard. If I lived in the US and wanted I to buy a car, I know I could buy any of your repaired vehicles with total confidence. It will be interesting seeing the rest of the repair. All the best from Queensland Australia.

The end of this video is fairly relevant at the moment, fixing a car at work (not body work, just mechanical stuff), it's a Jeep so not overly common around here, so I had my nice pile going because the owner supplied a bunch of his own replacement parts. The new guy took over the job, and asked me what the pile was, so I told him it was all the old parts and he asked me why they were there, in a pile. Then I think he threw them out, I don't think he will need any of it, but I don't know, and it's his problem now, so that's nice
