This rebuilt Terrain looked bad on the surface but what is underneath is worse

If you thought the surface looked bad on this Terrain wait until we find out what is lurking beneath all that body filler, under the carpet and behind the trim panels. The rebuild industry has certainly changed over the years. Work like this is becoming far too common. It will add a little time to the build but we can get it all fixed and back to good condition, safe and reliable once again.

Love watching the door latch vibrating around at 13:40, shows how well it was fixed! I wonder if the people who's car it was for the newest crash have seen this and realised what deathtrap they were driving round in, few more mph in the crash, bit more force, and that rear could have severely collapsed in, as it had already lost most of it's structural strength due to the folds in the floor and panels and the lovely 'rebuilt' bits, nice job, with lots of zippies, wheeee! Did worry the pile might reject, and throw back, some of the more embarrassingly bodged bits!

Saving my car from the crusher long enough for it to get me to work and the grocery store long enough to continue making the payments and rent for a while is an unqualified successful repair. You fanboys on this site drool over this term "rebuild" like it came out of the mouth of your interior designer "husband" thing. I have never heard of a repair shop doing an auto-body "rebuild". Insurance approved body shop usually means a cheap repair. Someone threw diluted paint on my freshly painted car. My friend who has a shop was able to buff it off the body but said the vinyl roof would need repainting and gave the $800 estimate to the appraiser. He rejected it even though it was less than the actual price. The appraiser said to take it to "their shop" and the estimate was $400, or about 1/3 what it would cost at my friend's shop. I went there, asked him if he could do it all for $400 and after he stopped laughing he asked me if I was on drugs as it would be at minimum $1600. Showed him the appraisal from the adjuster and he thought the guy was out of his mind.

@@vehcor My girlfriend drives a 2012 Malibu with the 2.4 LE5. She got it new and It's been a pretty bad experience. (The edits are because I'm having to remember everything I've replaced or fixed). I change the oil when the computer says 30% because that's usually around 4,000 miles and 6 months. The computer let the first oil change go 6,000 miles in about 10 months. Despite that, one of the nylon timing guides snapped in half where the fastener passes through at 60,000 miles. Luckily I was driving and heard the clatter in time to save the engine. It was squeaky clean in there when I opened it up to clean out the broken up nylon, replace the chain, guides, and tensioner. Shortly thereafter, the exhaust manifold cracked in half. Then the flange broke off the exhaust above the catalyst at the weld. Both rear brake calipers have developed slow leaks and left the car stranded with no brake fluid and they destroyed the clear-coated alloy wheel in the process. The variable cam solenoids have both died, once each. The parking brake pedal ratchet lock mechanism has worn out twice, making it so you can't set the parking brake. One front wheel bearing has failed. All the speakers have died at least once, and replacing the power mirror switch is a yearly thing. Also, all the hard plastic interior panels like the a pillar, steering wheel center cover, sail panels, etc. have leached their plasticizers and become irreversibly sticky and gross, so they're perpetually caked in dust, hair, pollen, polyester fibers, etc. and can't really be cleaned. I've never had a car kick me in the balls constantly like this one has. I can't wait to see it go. I definitely won't own another GM product if I can help it.

that's the kind of work you get when you take your car to your insurance's preferred body shop.

Yep! Years ago I did that after my car was recovered after being stolen. The shop that “fixed” it couldn’t even manage to use a matching interior door panel - and this wasn’t some exotic antique, it was a 4 year old Nissan!

Of all the so called car builders on YT, I’d actually buy a car that you rebuilt.

I am certain it was in a wreck but from the looks of it, it was worse the first time and no one likes a second unless its a grandma cookie. Glad that you do this as it opens my eye to what some repairs do as a after effect in the events of accidents an life jeopardy

An old friend used to run a salvage yard and body shop. Saved them a ton of money since so many parts were sourced in-house. Another guy I knew rebuilt Impalas like Scott rebuilds Grand Ams. He had 10+ in a warehouse so most parts were almost free.

I’m really enjoying this. It’s a shame about the previous “repairs” as it gives your whole industry a bad name. It doesn’t help that insurance companies keep screwing the prices they pay to panel shops. All the insurance companies are interested in is that it looks good and that the customer doesn’t complain. I found a reputable company locally that I took my car to. They told me that I could come by at anytime unannounced and look at the repairs they were doing. I explained that I was concerned about how the body sealant would look and they showed me a box of nozzles to suit various manufacturers. I called in a couple of time and was very happy with what I saw and when I got the car back you really couldn’t tell it had been repaired. There wasn’t even any tell tale over spay to be seen anywhere. Unfortunately I’ve had to go to them several times over the years and their work is always excellent. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺

Thanks for the lessons in contemporary auto anatomy. I come from one generation of cars back... when you could get a good car for 1/10 the price. But, they weren't as safe. And you show how structural bondo use, bad welds, and missing air bags could actually result in criminal problems... I hate to admit it, but energy absorption designed into the crushable steel structure is one of the great safety improvements built into (many) modern cars... and structural bondo and bad welds do not give the same results as standard steel. If the accident investigators catch on, hack shops may face criminal (and/or civil) action. Then, your style of repair -- properly -- will become the standard. Again, thanks for your excellent work.
