This is a preview of the program "Pullman Rail Journeys: Rebirth of an American Legend."
Iowa Pacific, in coordination with Amtrak, is bringing back the Pullman name as they relaunch first class railroad passenger service. In October, 2013, we filmed a round from Chicago to New Orleans and return aboard P.R.J.'s inaugural route, coupled to the rear of Amtrak's City of New Orleans.
Along the way we visit the yard in Chicago and the platforms of Union Station, and see the sights and meet the people of Pullman during the course of the journey. They explain the operation, as well as telling a bit about themselves and their thoughts about being part of the relaunching of an American tradition.
We also see meets with other trains, preserved Illinois Central landmarks, the scenery of the regions the train passes through, and visit some of the locations along the line. We also make a side trip to Vaughn, Mississippi, now nearly a ghost town and the site of the wreck of John Luther "Casey" Jones in 1900.
Part travel program, part history documentary, and part railfan video, this show is sure to entertain anyone who enjoys passenger trains and the old Illinois Central.

My grandpa owned one of these pullman cars many years ago. He had an office at union Station in Denver for many years and my father worked for amtrak.

I just love the Art Deco style of these Pullmans. I was fortunate enough to enjoy a Pullman sleeping can back in the early 80's. On 1 trip we were two couples with a joining rooms. They opened the room divider and it became quite spacious. It was still real 1st class back then. We had our own porter and several nice perks included with the services.

Amtrak should add a second section to the Laje Shore Limited and call it tge 21st Century Limited, using original New York Central livery and make it all luxury, even use restored Pullman cars. Could be a money maker.

I live in Rantoul. I don't recall ever seeing an old Pullman on an Amtrack train.

Unfortunately, Pullman Rail Journeys did not last. Passenger loads did not reach a profitable level, and the contract with Amtrak was not renewed. The cars quit running in 2014 or 2015 (I forget exactly when). However, when shooting this program I did shoot the Rantoul station from the vestibule of "Ponchartrain Club." That shot is in the program.

That's too bad. Its a interesting and exciting concept,Pullman cars on Amtrac. Ive been thinking all day about how to incorporate that into a family adventure.

Anyone interested in Pullman the man should take the walking tour through the old industrial town of Pullman (the alleged utopian town George Pullman built for his workers on the far south side of Chicago in the latter part of the 1800's). Pullman employees were required to live in the town of Pullman and were heavily governed by rules set up by their employer George Pullman. Congregating in parks was not allowed and neither was drinking in the one bar in town that sold liquor. He increased work hours but cut wages and raised rents and when citizens formed a committee to complain, George Pullman had them all fired.

Good video. By the way it's Illinois, and not "Ellenois."

Does it still pass through Kankakee?

The City of New Orleans does, of course, but Pullman Rail Journeys did not prove financially viable. The planned expansion to other routes never happened, and the cars came off the City less than two years after it started.

I would like to ride it.

Unfortunately, Pullman Rail Journeys was unable to make a go of it. Rather than expanding, the service came to an end about a year after this DVD was made.

Why does it back in and out of Union Station? Is there only one way to get onto the air line?

Slater Rickson it dose it because of it pulled out locomotive first it would run the whole line backwards

They usually pull in forward upon arrival. After passengers are all let off and baggage, packages and mail unloaded, a switcher pulls the train out and takes it to the service facility for cleaning, resupply and needed repairs. When that is all done, they back them in to the station and then the assigned locomotives are attached. Trains usually pull out forward on to their destinations. In the case of this train it probably pulled forward into the station, was loaded, then backed out onto a WYE (a "Y"-shaped track used for changing the direction of the train) to face it forward, then it went forward on its merry way. Since it crossed the St. Charles Airline bridge going backward, this makes sense, because there is a WYE located near there for turning it around. That's my theory.
