what's so funny is that i've seen that movie like 10 times and never even realized we don't actually see inside the briefcase? like i just assumed it was hella gold and it was just a stylistic choice to show the actors faces with the yellow shine instead.

The McGuffin explanation was always the one in my head.. it simply doesn`t matter what`s in the case, it`s obviously something incredible but isn`t necessarily something specific, Tarantino just loves movies and making something meta like that is definitely his style

Tim Roth’s character says “is that what I think it is”.. meaning its something tangible and well known. It has value beyond belief. It’s most likely natural to give off such a glow. Something scientific.

I was actually on set handling the lighting for this scene.. so I know exactly what was in that case.. it was Marcellus’s dirty laundry.. a gold set of his and hers thongs.. they were being taken by Jules and Vincent to get cleaned..

When the briefcase opens up, LEDs mounted in the inside wall of the briefcase (which are connected to a battery) turn on. The light emitting diodes help illuminate the solid gold bricks inside the case: creating an obvious golden glow.

It’s definitely an artefact of some kind, as Tim Roth’s character said “it’s beautiful”. It’s gotta be something like that

The golden glow was a clean glow meaning it was reflecting a smooth same surface like 2 gold bars w a gold mace in middle[ ie not a cluster of glowing golden nuggety or diamondy stuff which would show a fragmented glow etc.

I think what you see in the case can help you expand on what the entire movie is actually about. That’s the beauty. Your perception of the story and the outcome can be decided by the contents of the case

Pulp Fiction is my favorite movie and to be fairly honest, i don't really care whats in the briefcase! Tarantino himself also stated that its whatever we'd like it to be. So for my eyes it should be something related with the Devil.

I have a personal theory for this: it can be anything. Let me explain: it can be anything. A fancy weapon, a lot of money or something of good value, the soul of Marcelus, or even the result of the robbery that the gang of Reservoir Dogs achieved. And that's the purpose of the briefcase. Making you imagine what's inside and building theories of what's inside. If anybody discovers what is in there, all the interest on the briefcase (and its purpose) will be lost, and it will be from now then just a boring briefcase.

What’s in the briefcase depends on what someone thinks is in it, so it can technically be whatever you want. But what was REALLY in that briefcase was just sum lightbulbs & a battery

Nothing...it was always meant to be a mystery maguffin so any conjecture is purely speculative. There is not supposed to be a definitive answer, choose your own adventure like the fade to black in the Sopranos finale.

From the starting of the movie till its end I thought that it contained blocks of Gold hence the yellow shine. I am startled to see why this video contains conspiracy about a soul but blocks of gold inside it.

There was another macguffin in the movie. It worked as a foil for Marsellus's own briefcase to the point that it led to Butch's eventual triumph over a fictional Los Angeles underworld. Notably, it was described as an uncomfortable hunk of metal. It's meaning, however, was thoroughly explained... in great detail.

I always thought that Jules should have had a spin-off movie.

So when I say Kill Bill in theaters the scene where the bride tells Vivca a fox's character how they would be square a dotted square appears like in Pulp Fiction but every other version I've seen is missing the box. Did any one else see the dotted box in kill bill?

To me it was always just gold. The characters that look into it are ultimately greedy, criminal individuals. Vincent stands in silence contemplating whether or not to take this life-changing amount of money, while Ringo thinks he just became unbelievably rich.

I love how people say they never thought about it but as soon as I realised they wouldn't show the briefcase in the movie I went nuts.

There's an episode of I Was There Too with the guy who played Marvin. He was told by Tarantino that the briefcase contains the most valuable thing the person viewing it can imagine. in reality, there was just a little light inside.

I remember getting a college email during the early days of the internet regarding Pulp Fiction trivia (1996). It supported the first theory here, that Wallace's soul is in the briefcase

In an attempt to get true surprised reactions from the characters it. Was gold foil around the edges along with LED lights over it with a PlayBoy magazine opened to the center fold in the middle.

I swear, I just finally saw this film, and cannot tell if I liked the film or hated it. It was good, yet odd. That said, I'd definitely watch it again. Haha damn it Quintin you've done it again

What if in the case is the Maltese falcon ?

Note that only Vincent and Ringo looked in the briefcase on screen. Vincent was clearly affected by what he saw, and that tells me it's something more than gold or diamonds, because Vincent I imagine would be used to seeing stuff like that in his line of work, and Ringo described it as 'beautiful', like he's seen God as opposed to something that's worth a lot of money. And that same glow is shown when Vincent and Jules shoot Brett down. So I think whatever it was, it saw into Vincent's soul and started testing his morality, hence the "divine intervention" dropping hints that Vincent should stop. The big theme in the movie is about redemption, but also the whole thing was a moral test for Vincent that was set in motion once he looked in the briefcase, but he ultimately failed when he didn't stop his life of crime, picked a fight with Butch, used heroin (hence he's always in the bathroom and almost leads to Mia's death), kills Marvin and is tempted by Mia, which all led to his death. Jules clearly knew what was in case and knew what would happen if Ringo looked in it, hence his reluctance to open it, so after the movie ends, Ringo is on the same moral test as Vincent and Jules must have passed. So in a nutshell, I don't think it was Marsellus's soul, but something divine that Marsellus uses to test people. The three guys (not including Marvin) in the apartment must have looked in it, and they all got killed for however they screwed Marsellus over. Jules was basically leading Vincent to this moral test, and him "trying real hard to be the shepherd". The three people killed in the movie who didn't look in the briefcase (at least in my theory) were either killed by Butch, who never looked in the case, hence he got out alive, or Vincent who carelessly shot Marvin and didn't show any remorse for it, hence he suffers the consequences. But Butch doesn't die despite being just as remorseless for killing Floyd, because he was never being tested.

There's already a lot of connections that tie Tarantino's movies into the same universe, but what's really cool to think about is if it's the diamonds from Reservoir Dogs.

I love Pulp Fiction but I've never been able to work out what it's actually about.

I think it meant to be GOLD. The light projection and color would match and the look on the characters faces reminds me to the astonishment like in Kelly's Heroes as they uncover the gold in the bank.

Someone else mentioned the Holy Grail. Yep. That's it. In some versions the Grail can provide whatever sustenance one desires-- which is pretty close to "whatever you want it to be". Briefcase as Holy Grail, Wolfe as Merlin, the master of illusion, Vince & Lancelot as Lancelot and Guinevere, Marcellus as Arthur, Butch with his sword... Pulp Fiction (on one level) is a set of Arthurian legends set in a crime context, inviting us to relate the glorified violence of classic heroes to that in more modern settings. Knights of the Round Table were hired thugs? Crime kingpins share the valour of Arthur? Up to you... Google "Arthurian legends Pulp Fiction"-- as I'm not the only one to take a high fallutin' view of Tarentino's gem. (Watching a movie like you have to write an English essay on it can be fun ;-)

I still think the briefcase contained something supernatural..The three 6's was the code to open it and whatever was in it could've been what stopped the bullits hitting Jules & Vincent...Maybe Tarantino was going to link the story somehow to the "miracle" but then realized it would be cooler to keep the briefcase mysterious.

Ringo has an awareness of what the item in the briefcase is. It’s not something unrecognisable or otherworldly

Since everyone who saw it immediately recognized it and was in awe of it, i must logically assume that it is something like King Tuts mask. Nobody would have any idea what a soul looks like.
