Pungo Unit of the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge located in Hyde and Washington Counties in Eastern North Carolina.
I attempted to bag Pungo Lake in a late 2020 visit to this area, but I was unable to arrive at the lake via the refuge roads that come in from the northeast from the Phelps Lake area. So I had to study the maps and form a new plan. In this late November 2021 visit I entered the refuge from the "main" entrance near Union Grove, NC, and found my way to the observation platform on the southern shores of Pungo. Many of the interior roads are closed this time of year to protect migratory birds but I still got a good view of this naturally occurring lake. The Pungo Unit is also well known for its large Black Bear population. Unfortunately no bears were sighted on this blustery late Fall day. Thanks for watching!

Man sorry for the delay in replying for some reason I didnt see this. Yes yes this is a very remote place. I tried to get to this lake last year by coming down from the north. It looked good on the map but I couldn’t get there. So after studying the place I found the right way in and this time I made it. I was disappointed that I didnt see any bears, its loaded with them out there, but the blustery weather probably had them hiding. Thanks so much for watching!

I stopped by there yesterday and was lucky enough to see a family of river otters chowing down whatever they were catching in a canal by the Duck Pen trail. Of course thousands of Tundra Swans too, but no luck seeing any black bear.

Hey thanks for checking out my video. Thats awesome you saw the otters. Lots of wildlife out there. Sadly I didn’t see much on this particular day because it was cold and blustery.

I had no idea bear liked the low land. Great place to explore in the Taco.

Thanks so much for watching, my friend. Oh yes bears love the low country. In Virginia, there are more bears in Dismal Swamp than in any other part of the state.

Thanks, my friend. Yeah I really hoped to see some bears out there but I think they were all hiding from the cold wind that morning. Some of them may have been up in Indiana trying to find That Hiking Guy lol!

These roads are left rough by design. It’s not meant to be a heavily travelled place.

Doesn't look as if those roads are good for passenger cars. That seemed like a fairly big lake. I was hoping you'd show us a bear but great little trip anyway.
@SmellNRoses

Thanks for watching, my friend. For the most part the roads are decent but there were some rough spots. Its very soft and sandy on places. I’d be nervous on a regular passenger car. I was really hoping to see some bears too. I think they were hiding from the brisk wind that morning.

What a beautiful place! Ive been thinking about planning a trip out here but after seeing the roads I am not sure if my vehicle would do well here. Do you think a normal sedan would do okay driving here?
@SmellNRoses
@SmellNRoses Год назад
Thank you! Yes it is a beautiful area. The roads out around Pungo are a little sketchy for a normal car. I suggest checking out nearby Phelps Lake at Pettigrew State Park. I have videos of that place as well. I highly recommend it too. Its easier access and you won’t be disappointed with the views and wildlife, etc.

Nice park. I was hoping you were going to see some bears. I have to say I live in the mountains of Virginia and have seen black bears at my farm in Grayson County and also when I owned a home in Carroll County. They are amazing creatures to observe.

Yes I was disappointed that I didn’t see any bears on this visit. There are so many out there that usually see them. Yes we have plenty in Virginia, I think they are in all regions. We had a large one stroll through my work site just a couple of weeks ago lol

You have to be careful and not walk up nose to nose with a Volkswagen sized bear.
