This is the first time I've ever heard a Punky Meadows interview. He was very candid and sounded really down to earth. I always thought his guitar solos were done very tastefully. From the interview, it sounds like they really started from the bottom and worked their way up. Way to go Punky. The guy is really a survivor from that era.
I love what Punky had to say about these people who start out playing guitar and they play as if they're only trying to impress you. They're not playing from the heart.
Punky.....Seattle 1979 Paramount theater....best concert I've ever seen....I still listen to the 1st 3 Angel albums quite often. Angel still remains one of my top 10 rock groups. Thank you.
I saw Angel warm up for Styx. It blew our minds when they did the “magic show” appearance on stage. The music started and stage hands brought out cube boxes and stacked them up. Than the band just walked out of these stacks. To top that! The angel face up behind the stage became animated. Holy Crap! And even better.. their music is incredible.
Fabulous interview with Punky Meadows. He has always understood how to look and act like a star onstage - the best makeup, hair and clothes! Yet he is so down to earth and honest. He looks great.
Punky deserves respect. He has a humble attitude, was able to make fun of himself and be a good sport back in the days of "Punky's Whips". Great player on top of that!
Always loved Angel. Got a chance to see Punky perform with his new band at B.B. Kings a few years ago (with other early Angel member Felix Robinson who played a few tunes on bass, and also on bass, Randy Gregg). It was incredible. Punky is not only an amazing talent, but has the sharp stage moves too; really puts on the rock show. Hearing/seeing "Tower" live, it was like, "I can't believe what I just saw!" Wish I saw Angel back in the day, but this B.B. Kings gig was super cool. After the show Punky and Felix were nice to take photos with my husband and I. Great interview, thanks Rock Scene.
I was fortunate enough to see Angel back in the day when, as Punky mentioned in this interview, they opened up for Styx, at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix, Arizona. This was in December 1979 when Styx were on tour supporting their "Cornerstone" album and Angel were supporting their "Sinful" album. Although I thought for the longest time that it was the year before in 1978 when Styx were supporting their "Pieces Of Eight" album and Angel were supporting their "White Hot" album. Either way, both bands were awesome that night.
Angel is one of the most under rated bands. They had such an original and great sound on their albums. Punky has licks that I've never heard any other guitarists do. He has a style all his own. Barry Brandt was my second drum hero when I was around 12. First was Peter Criss, only because Kiss was the first rock band I ever heard at my age back then. But when I learned of Angel and got to see them in concert in '79, it was awesome. As a musician today still, at 60 years old, I still site Angel as a big influence on me. I often reference their earlier albums for songs I compose.
@@hellin69 I always wondered if black was his natural hair color. He's always had exotic looks. I was a little young in the 70s to get into their music but I liked Punky. Now as an adult I notice Frank DiMino looks good. He's aged very well too.
I was a kid wen i got My first Ángel album i'm 52 i must being around 10 years old .ir was the live album i listen to ir on the dark late at night un litle Town in México dreaming of a live concert,it was magical!!!
I was a kid and had White Hot....played it and Broken Heart by the BABYS late in the dark....I just saw Angel in 2019 and met Punky and Frank! Dream Come True!
I just purchased "Fallen Angel" on CD last week. I would have got it sooner but I didn't know about it until I listened to this interview. It's one of the best rock albums I have ever heard. No bulkshit. The writing is solid. The group is tight. Punky's guitar work is beautiful and melodic. The photography inside the CD booklet is amazing--great pictures of Punky when he was coming up. A true rocker from early on. I will be enjoying this album for many years to come. The beginning brings me right back to the opening of an Angel concert 40 years ago. Great work. This album blows away anything Punky would have done with KISS in my opinion.
Punky has such a beautiful shiny hairdo, and the angle at which he's recorded in this interview emphasizes the pooched-out succulence of his insolent pouting rictus, the sight of which drives us helpless viewers mad with desire!
"Fallen Angel" has a great lineup. These gentlemen can rock with the best of them. It just goes to show that age doesn't have anything to do with creativity. Keep on rocking.
I never knew that the headlining bands would make the backup bands play under certain rules. Angel should be proud of what they accomplished. I always thought Punky was a handsome, intelligent and very motivated musician. No need for any cosmetic enhancement.
Wow. That was very informative and very telling. It answered my question all these years why Angel wasn't bigger? It was because they were as good if not better than the headliner bands that they opened for. I remember back in the day the same thing happened to Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush. I believe it was Aerosmith at the Texas Jam that was very pissed-off that night that they had to follow Mahogany Rush who absolutely killed it! I give much kudos to bands like Blue Oyster Cult & Ted Nugent for keeping them on. BRAVO.
Fuck Yeah! Punky is a great songwriter and a tasteful player. His work in his recent solo album "Fallen Angel" and "Risen" with the resurrected Angel are a much needed breath of fresh air in this era of auto-tuned crap.
Saw them when they had "the pods" like in spinal tap only they worked. Guessing that's where spinal tap got that idea. Molly Hatchet opened for them on their first tour, it was a great show when America was still great.
That was AWESOME!!!! HE LOOKS GREAT!!!! I immediately thought he was Egyptian because he looks like one of my Egyptian belly dance teachers who was in Egyptian films because he was so handsome, but he could dance and he danced very well. Punky still has THAT HAIR!! Very nice!!! He ripped on that guitar, man!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🌸🤟!!!!!
i love listening to Punky Meadows. He can cover a lot of things in mere seconds. No awkward pauses, just head-on telling his stories. And a cool guy too. (And he still got that hairstyle from his Cherry People days).
Was hoping he would mention the English Setters. Love Angel. Saw them 5 times in the 70’s. Met Punky, Frank, Mickey & Greg at one point. All down to earth guys….. Down to Earth as it is in Heaven…..
I read somewhere that Punky was offered a gig on both Kiss and Aerosmith and he turnned them both down. That shows his integrity and belief on his own stuff. He is an underrated player in my opinion.
I didn't get to see them early on, I was young enough my parents wouldn't let me go to concerts yet. However I am going to see them next March for the first time, and even though it not all the originals, I do get to see Punky & Frank. 😁
Just saw Angel play in Carteret, NJ. What a fun show! Punky's poster was on my bedroom wall in Colonia, NJ, growing up. Angel opened for Ace Frehley's band.
@@Howrad33 LOL...IM OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER.....THIS.....FRANK ZAPPA ONCE SAID PUNKY WAS THE BEAUTIFULEST MAN ON THE PLANET......YEAP THERES SOME PERKS TO BEING AN OLD ROCK AND ROLLER..FACT....AMEN 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🥁🥁🥁🥁
The Punky I knew was not botoxed up and without hair transplants. The late 70s - early 80s, I knew his brother Timmy who played in bands Deuce and Tension....hung out at their place in Wheaton MD. Capital Centre, my old stomping grounds. Worked there for 4 years, Union Job.
I met him in 2019 and saw Angel and Starz....his hair looked real just dyed black....he always had thick hair and tons of girls and groupies....he had his hotel room blocked by 9 girls wait ing in front of it! Oh the stories he told us at the meet n greet last year! AMAZING story teller and he has a photographic memory! They rocked in 2019! He played like a creator of the instrument! Frank sounds like a fine tuned siren at 69!
Loved the CAP CENTER...seen many shows there ( R.I.P.) Never got to see ANGEL back in the day...but had all their LPs...loved me sum ANGEL ( WHITE HOT )...still do... PUNKY IS A LEGEND!!! 👍🤘👍🤘🤘🤘👍🤘👍🤘👍🤘....also THE BAYOU!!!
i was intrudeced at 15..i saw them with Mothers Finest and Frank Marinos Mahogany Rush and a band that didnt show Black Oak Arkasas..in Little Rock!!!!! James Dandy had issues!
Why do so many people hate this guy? I'm not an Angel fan. I just liked the opening guitar riff to The Tower. It's a great musical hook . So many anonymous posts take a shot at a harmless guy who has lived his life more or less on his terms and who likes to tell his story to anyone interested to listen. Why is everyone so miserable? It's pathetic. Would it really kill you'll to be kind for one minute? Damn. If you think your nasty little posts are harmless, well, you know better, don't you?
In around 1978 Angel filmed a free concert in Cleveland, asked the fans attending to wear white shirts. That concert film was never released....anybody know anything more about it?
The footage is lost for real It was going to be called " Angel At Midnight" Greg Guiffria looked high and low for it years ago He figured it probably was thrown out maybe when Casablanca went under Perhaps it's in some vault - might pop up one day More than just one show was filmed They filmed in 77 with Mickey still in the band and just told the cameramen to avoid him cuz they knew they were ready to kick him out - at leadt that's what i read/heard somewhere
I saw Angel about 5 times. Yeah, all those other bands should've been afraid..very afraid. They were better than all those bands that they opened for. Thank goodness I always saw them as headliners.
No disrespect to this cat, whom I have never even heard of. But honest to God, when I first saw the thumbnail, I wasn’t sure if I was looking at *Katey Sagal’s* twin sister or a guy.
I love this guy! It seems as if he just was catapulted from 1975 to present.... soo sexy!!! Angel is one of the ultimate rock bands I'd so much love to see live in Europe! Punky and Angel is one of those immortal evidences how huge the 1970s were!
@@bigrigJim He’s always had full lips, yes, but those have definitely been augmented. They have the telltale hallmarks of lip filler, the upper lip “shelf” and the overall lumpy unevenness. He also has filler in his cheeks. I just can’t grasp how this could look normal or natural to anyone.
I remember that, Kiss, STARZ , Angel and few other bands . I think Billy Squire was on that label also. I saw Angel at the Capitol theatre in Wheeling. I was working there as a stagehand. The sound company never heard of wheels. lol Most of the cabinets for the PA system had no fuckin wheels. so put casters on a couple of flats to roll them in because the stage door was 200 foot from truck staging area. Great show though. Saw them a few times in Wheeling in the 70's and maybe early 80's. There show was great when they could headline. Theatrical rock at its finest.
Before he got heavily into the glam rock thing, Punky Meadows was a member of the finest hard rock band in Washington DC, the Cherry People. They packed houses, every night, and had lines of people winding around the block, on weekends, to see them. Punky was an incredible guitarist and a DC legend. All of the guitar players in the DC metropolitan area knew of Punky and came to check him out. The band (Doug and Chris Grimes, Jan Zukowski and Rocky Issac) were superb musicians. They were, imo, were worlds better than any of Punky's other bands. Much better. The damn shame about the Cherry People is that the record label they had when they first started out (MGM) marketed them as a soft, bubble gum group and over arranged their records with harps and strings, etc., and had them record pop pablum. There's no telling what they could have accomplished had they had the right management behind them..
