If you have all the video 8 and Hi8 camcorder tapes from the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s and you are looking to view them or digitize your tapes to a USB or cloud even DVD and your video camcorder has disappeared or stop working the place where most people go to find old equipment is eBay or apps like OfferUp or websites like craigslist. Most of the equipment on these sites are well used to put it politely and do not offer returns or refunds so you have to endure possibly losing money. This video is covering a live unboxing of 30 year old camcorders and seeing if they work or not, if you are looking to get your videotapes transferred yourself, you will have to buy some dead pieces of equipment to find a good one or if you’re looking to transfer you through a company still goes through the things to look for to ensure you don’t have drama including lost tapes, poor quality, transfers, etc. if you would like to get a quote from Got Memories, please go to www.gotmemorie...

I’ve gotten all of my video cameras on eBay, as long as you make sure it says tested and fully working in the description they should be fine. I’ve gotten everything from full-size VHS cameras, mini DV, 8 mm, hi 8, VHS, SVHS c And mini DVD.

Out of the 6 Hi8 camcorders I've purchased off Ebay, only had one that was bad, I was able to get a refund as well. I never buy anything that has scratches or doesn't have a return policy.

I bought a Panasonic Reporter from a Thrift store. It didn't have a tape, battery, or power source. I jury rigged to to a car battery and it came on. I ended up buying another Reporter from Ebay for the case and charger. Bought a couple of VHS tapes, and they both ended up working, pretty well. I have since bought Panasonic Omnimovie thinking the battery I bought for the Reporter would work. No such luck, but the camcorder fired right up. I bought a battery from Ebay and it is now lost somewhere in Maine for some reason. I have also bought 3 or 4 camcorders of various makes and they all have failed for one reason or another. I think I'll stick to the huge Panasonics. Great video, thanks.

I bought what I think was a brand new DVD camcorder at a thrift store, and it worked. It was a Canon DVD camcorder, still in the box, and came with a battery, case, AV cable, the manual, and 5 new disc. I paid $4 for it. If I had to guess, somebody got it, never used it, and probably stored it for years, then took it to the thrift store. The disc also these days would sell for $20, so I got a great deal.

One of many things, time to buy a few more camcorders on eBay, trial and error, they all have issues bc they’re all old and used. Good luck!

hey Phil, I’ve got a Sony TRV48E with dirty heads, and the camcorder gives me the message saying that it has dirty heads, but how can I tell if they’re worn out too? the camcorder was used quite a bit back in the 2000s

There are Hi-8 and Video8 VCRs that existed but they may have only been a Japanese thing, I've certainly never seen any locally.

Yes, in Japan Video 8 VCR’s we’re the norm vs VHS in the US.

Hi, I read that Hi8 camcorders will play Video-8 tapes so bought a used Hi8 camcorder to play my Video-8 tapes and transfer onto digital format. It will play the tapes but they play at a higher speed. Only 4 out of my 10 tapes will play at normal speed. (They are all video-8 tapes) Can anybody explain why this is happening please?
@gotmemories
@gotmemories Месяц назад
That’s odd. I’d try those tapes on some different players and see if the same problem is replicated. If it’s the same, there was an issue with the original camcorder when recording.

Are your family from India/Pakistan? if the tapes were recorded on a camcorder purchased in that region then the tapes are PAL and you’re trying to play them on an NTSC camcorder. You’ll need a PAL camcorder. They’re rare and expensive in the US and usually don’t work, assuming you’re in the US.

Hey Phil - are you able to share what you paid for each of the 3 cameras you've live unboxed in this video? It would be a really helpful gauge of whether price can provide crumbs of a trail through the 'jungle' as you say. My Sony TRV110E just 'died' 8 (out of 88) tapes into my project (!). So I now have to repair (both sussex pros contacted have politely declined), replace (hence question above) or use a transfer service (shipping 80 tapes to your excellent sounding service in Arizona from UK has feasibility considerations, of course). So, wondered - as a follow up to this video - whether there ARE any tips (over and above sellers with a return/ refund policy) to help identify a suitable replacement for my Canon UC900 (video8) and Sony TRV110E (digital8) footage, mostly on Sony MP Hi8 cassettes? Many thanks for any insights. Nick

Hi Nick! Trying to think back, it was prob around $150. Although the pix on eBay showed them as being battered on the outside so I didn’t have high hopes but when they are like that, there’s a good chance they’ll rewind fine and I just use them as rewinders. As for sending to AZ, problem being you’re PAL & I’m NTSC & I’ve got one PAL D8 player and I charge a fortune for PAL. I would try two places, AFX Audio Visual in Cheltenham, that’s my Dads old company, James digitizes the tapes (I’ve got a video on my channel with James just type in ‘AFX James’ only problem is they transfer to dvd first then rip to mp4. Also try Colin at Videostudio99.co.uk As for picking a used but working D8, stay away from backwards compatible and zoom in on the photos to see any nicks and misuse, buy one with a warranty and buy head cleaner and isopropyl to clean also.

Hey Phil! Thanks SO MUCH for your prompt and considered reply and my apologies the delayed response - I don't get reactive pings or alerts so only spotted this today coming back to this weekend project. I will definitely keep in mind the 2 UK contacts too 🙏 a personal rec is definitely helpful in this marketplace. Finally - in case its of interest - I got lucky. I was literally about to bin my TRV110E, but found a blank tape (not sealed, but unused) and decided to see if the camera still recorded. I recorded 20 secs and the 20 secs was COMPLETELY CLEAR on playback! I obviously then checked some of the other tapes and they are ALL CLEAR on playback too! It appears that using the recording features has somehow wiped away whatever debris must have been on the heads, that playback couldn't - does that even sound feasible? because it's the only thing that makes sense to me, but none of the online threads suggested this as an option, so keen to hear your expert opinion? Anyway, I am proceeding without hitch (but with much more caution) and have managed to transfer another 13 tapes at time of typing this. Only 72 to go. And am meticulously using the isopropyl ("rubbing alcohol" here in uk) and chamois swabs every 5 tapes. And recording 20 secs every 10 tapes, so 🤞🤞. Your video efforts go above and beyond, Phil and have provided enormous reassurance so thanks once again for giving me the time. I lived and worked in Houston, TX for 2 years in the early 00s btw but returned for family reasons, but loved the S/ SW States - glorious weather and cost of living. Lucky you! Take care,

I have the Sony Handycam CCD-TRV218 hi8, it stoped working but I have hi 8 tapes I recorded on I’m planning on buying a similar handycam but it’s digital 8 will it be able to play back that footage and convert it to digital
@gotmemories

Needs to be a backwards compatible camera. Almost all the backwards compatible camcorders are extremely expensive and extremely unreliable.
