So here's a funny thing: In the original myth, Gilgamesh actually WAS fond of other men's wives and used his right as king to have sex with women on the day of their wedding. This got the population so pissed off with him that they prayed to the gods to send someone to teach him a lesson. So it's really funny that Archer asks him that question in particular

Both Lancer and Gilgamesh's encounter are just them basically going "I fucking hate you, in every universe". Facts about servants: Servants dont generally remember their other manifestations/summonings in other Fate series (with some exceptions like Musashi). But will have de ja vu moments for fan service

So far, my main takeaway from this series is that trying to guess a Servant's identity is a good way for someone to reveal just how much (or how little) they know about world history.

Two things Nico. First, Tamamo Aria was mentioned in previous games, but this game is her first appearance. We even had a COTD talking about this a few episodes ago. Also, Odin is essentially the Norse counterpart of Zeus. You literally played Odin Sphere and God of War Ragnorok this year. Two classic NicoB memory moments back to back. Also, Monokuma using Gungnir is a direct reference to the original myth since that was Odin’s spear that he used to fight Fenrir during Ragnorok. The reason Monokuma used it on that student is because she had a Fenrir tattoo that was connected to her talent and backstory.

As sokeone who's a big mythology nut with a cursory knowledge of Fate stuff but plays things like Shin Megami Tensei and Final Fantasy, Nico struggling to guess what Rogue Lancer's real name is both hilarious and painful

Monokuma does not use Gungnir, he uses spears that he calls Gungnir but they are quite obviously not the actual thing.

The thing about Servants that's not really touched on in this game as far as I can recall is that they (with some exceptions) don't retain memory of previous summons; Rogue Lancer can't say whether or not he knows Boss because it's possible they were summoned to the same battlefield before and neither remember it, but it's also possible they just don't jive with each other in general for other reasons.

I would like to point out that some of these servvants are going to come from mythologies you do not know, so trying to stress figuring them out is an exercise in futility.

Servants tend to not remember their previous summons as a rule of thumb, so even if *Rogue Lancer and Boss have met each other before, chances are they won’t remember that when summoned again in a different war. Edit: “Does Odin exist outside of Final Fantasy?” Nico, Final Fantasy’s legendary figures/summons are based on mythological figures that already existed, they’re not FF original, and a good deal of them are completely inaccurate to their original portrayals (Infamously Shiva from god of destruction to ice lady)

So with Lancer "not recognizing" Boss, it comes down to one facet of the Servant System that is very important - Servants are reset every time they are summoned. Essentially, Servants come from the Throne of Heroes, which is best thought of as Google Cloud. When a servant is summoned, the file is "copied" to the war with all of their skills and life knowledge in-tact. Even stuff from after the time of when they were summoned (Rogue Lancer would have his memories as an old man, even if he isn't right now). So as such, even if Lancer and Boss met in Stay Night, they won't have the memories of that time because this is a new "copied file" of them. Now, there is a caveat - they later confirmed that Servants CAN retain their memories of a Grail War after it's over, but it's only if they essentially die in a way that allows their "Cloud Copy" original in the Throne to receive the memory. In that case, a servant's memory will essentially be like a "book" in their brain - they don't innately have the knowledge of the events, but they can dig into themself for it and be told. They don't have to however. Final note - the Throne of Heroes transcends time. A war in 1600 can summon a hero from the 2000's. In that case, servants won't really need to even hide their identity - I mean, how could you know the weakness of someone not born yet?

It's funny that you brought up Lancers similarities to Grimmjow because his usual English VA, Tony Oliver, voices Ulquiorra in the Bleach dub. Also Boss's post 2006 English VA, David Vincent, DOES voice Grimmjow! He even still voices him as of the TYBW adaptation!

Ok so the thing with Lancer and Boss knowing each other is kind of tricky. You see, they technically don’t. At least not as a memory. Servants don’t take back any memories they accumulated during any of their manifestations. Every time a Servant is summoned, is a clean slate, unaffected by past summonings. That said, while they don’t ‘remember’ each other, Lancer and Boss still know each other. Put simply, every manifestation leave records that these Heroic Spirits can view in the Throne of Heroes (The official name for where these spirits go after they die, think of it like a higher dimensional information vault for noteworthy souls). It’s like reading books to reminisce on old memories but not remembering them happening yourself. It’s why Lancer is so coy as to whether they know each other.

Nico, regarding servants in regards to multiple summons. The source of servants is something called the Throne of Heroes, it's the source of their data. Of course when a servant dies or their summoning is over, they return to the throne of heroes. However all memories they gained during their summoning do not go with them. Thus if Rogue Lancer had met Boss during a previous summoning, he wouldn't know himself, cause he would no longer have access to those memories. At best the memories of their previous summoning is like a long forgotten dream, something they can vaguely remember happen, but none of the details. Of course there may be exceptions, but generally memories made during their summoning do not stay with them between different summonings.

Yeah, that Gilgamesh and Rogue Lancer interaction is fanservice for fans of the series, because they do have a history. However, they don't know each other as of this time. It's possible that they might have like an inkling that they know each other from their future interactions since Heroic Spirits exist outside of time, but they don't actually remember. Their interactions come hundreds of years after the events of this game, so there's that.

So Rougue Archer is from Fate/GO, (the mobile game) not only that but he also was one of the 7 servants used in the first opening of the game, so he has some relevance in its story, but nothing you need to know for Samurai Remnant. He also is based in the "quincy drip" Not only that, but he share his VA (Nobunaga Shimazaki) with "British Komaeda" and Fujimaru, the male protagonist of Fate/GO

Regarding lancer's and boss' exchange, servants don't keep memories of their previous summons. Even if both of them were summon twice in two different ritual/war, they would not remember anything and treat it as they're first meeting.

Rouge Archer is another big fan favorite who actually made his debut in the mobile game Fate/Grand Order hes got a lot of very passionate fans including myself for obvious reasons (hes hot) so seeing him show up is a treat also the encounter between Rouge Lancer and Boss is mostly fan service for the original Fate/Stay Night game but its common for servants not to remember the times they are summoned. plus stay night takes place in like 2004 so they technically havent met yet, but they can already feel each other vibes and they dont like them a real "I'll hate you in every universe" moment

So Aria! You’ll be happy to know that while she will inevitably be in the phone game she has only ever been referenced before this game which serves as her first proper appearance. That said her (for lack of a better non lore related word) sisters appear in other games and entries. I promise you they are all, so far, older than her.

Ok, clearly Nico wouldn't know who Rogue Lancer is even if people spoil his true name. Honestly there are a lot of historical figures people would be ignorant of unless they specifically study them so any spoiler quarantine is probably pointless outside of the main characters and plots.

Tamamo Aria is TECHNICALLY in Fate/EXTRA CCC, but this is her first proper appearance in the series. Additionally as for why she has the giant sword and doesn't use it... she originally had combat animations according to datamining but go unused... possibly could become used again when the DLC comes out.

I am guessing you heard of Gae Bolg as a weapon in Final Fantasy. Yup I looked it up and it is a weapon that Kihmari can get in FFX. Its also a strong weapon in Final Fantasy Tactics.

Servants normally don't remember past summons, if one was summoned to one Grail War and then the same Heroic spirit was summoned to another they won't remember what occurred. To be precise it could be said each time a Heroic Spirit is summoned more than once, they can be considered different individuals from their past summons each time. In the case of Rogue Lance and Boss(Gilgamesh) they did meet but before but them meeting here can also be considered their "first" time encountering each other as their current selfs. There are exceptions to this depending on circumstances and the individual servant. Also sometimes certain experiences will stick with the Servant even when they go back to the Throne of Heroes. As for whether Boss Gil remembers Rogue Lancer, well that easily could be case from him calling him dog as you noted, but even if he didn't remember the Dog insult still has significance. Not sure if was mentioned but the Ruler Class Servant has the ability to tell any Servants true name at a glance (unless they have an ability preventing that), and well Dog is actually another hint at Rogue Lancers identity, recall his title "Snarling Hound" from his first battle.

Its not only lust but also the sinister malicousness that seems to come from her smile that that makes me fear her. I know enough about Fate to know that a s**ual relationship with a Fox Spirit connected to the Legendary Tamamo-No-Mae could end in not a small amount of Torment on Body and Spirit.

To answer some questions and just explain some basic stuff: 1. Yes, Odin does exist outside of Final Fantasy. Since he's the the All Father in Norse Mythology which is the basis of Vanillaware's Odin Sphere which you played the Leifthrasir version of. And Gungnir is Odin's spear of light which in Fate is the extremely powerful prototype version of Gae Bolg due to being a weapon used by a god. 2. Rouge Archer is from Indian legend/Hindu Myth. Which makes him a complete powerhouse due to the insane feats that heroes and even gods can do in Hindu Mythology. So he's someone you shouldn't underestimate. And as someone who comes from a Hindu Family, I'm scared of the female servants which are the Goddesses of my faith due to how I can get cursed by them.... 3. Fate fans who plays Fate/Grand Order all knows the identity of servants that gets added to the game due to how the North American Server is two years behind the Japanese Server. And that means I and many others, are told their identities via live streams and can prepare to summon them during the two year wait. So your free to look into the servants of FGO if you want to or not. 4. Servants can very rarely retain their memories of past summonings. So while Rouge Lancer and Boss both encountered each other multiple times in the series, they don't have the memories of those meetings. Which does mean you won't get spoiled about the rest of the Fate Series. 5. All servants have many possible classes they can be summoned into. Meaning that Saber can be either a Lancer if they used a spear/lance which is apart of their legend or can be a rider if they rode on horseback in life. And this does apply to other servants such as Boss and Rouge Lancer. However, they are at their strongest when summoned into a certain classed and summoned to their homeland. Making all servants who are Japanese in origin be at their strongest in Japan, as it is where their legends and lives took place.

14:42 There is a cool detail after nearly every Battle. Iori always makes a unique sheathing Gesture depending on wich Stance he was using. Before he sheathes his Blade he always cleans it of in some way and if he was fighting Monsters or Humans he had to Kill you can see Blood fly of the Blade. If Iori fights non-lethaly he still makes the gesture but no Blood flys off, its a neat Detail I thought is worth mentioning.

Aria being the only non-playable Rogue other than Boss really disappointed me. She's one of the few Riders to actually have a mount, not to mention that FGO gave a full moveset to Tamamo Cat the feral *fox* wife that says woof.

The big bummer about Fate is knowing your favorite Servant is unlikely to make an appearance. And if they do, they are extremely unlikely to win.

Fun fact: a common phenomenon is when a heroic spirit is added to Fate, their fate counterpart tends to overtake their google searches. For example, if you look up the original Tamamo no Mae, you will see her fate counterpart mixed with actual historical images. Have fun with that knowledge!

A thing with Servants in the Fate universe is that each time they're summoned, they're essentially completely different people. They don't share memories between grail wars except in very rare circumstances. So Rogue Lancer here wouldn't remember anything from the original Fate/Stay Night's Holy Grail War and vice versa.

Nico being so baffled by Aria lovestruck with Iori is funny to me. I mean the men leering at her and him being kind enough to let her know wasnt good enough to see, that he isnt an easy man to fall for her just by her looks and charms.

Pretty late to comment so I hope so won't get buried. I'm pretty surprised no one else mentioned this but the class skill of Rulers is True Name Discernment. Similar to how Sabers have Magical Resistance and Berserkers have Madness Enhancement. True Name Discernment is pretty straightforward; unless a Servant has a skill or Noble Phantasm that specifically hides their identity, Rulers will always know EXACTLY who a Servant is. So Boss' dog comments were 100% directly specifically at Rouge Lancer. For reasons that may or may not be explained in the game (haven't played it) that Lancer hates being compared to a dog. Rulers are considered an extra class outside of the normal 7 that only get summoned if more then 7 servants are summoned in a single war. Their job is to moderate the conflict so it doesn't get TOO out of hand. Imagine if Lancers flame Noble Phantasm or Sabers water getsuga tenshou were used with no restriction (also keeping in mind some Servants have Noble Phantasms EVER MORE destructive then that) and imagine 14 Servants all going ham with then then imagine how quick cities and countries would be reduced to dust. To my knowledge, all Rulers have a Good alignment and most of them have qualifications to be saints.

It's fun seeing the end of battle animations to see if Iori was going for the kill or not, it'll make a wet doing as he starts blood off the blade by flicking it if he was going for it.

Rogue Lancer and Boss definitely have history together in the original Fate. But the specifics on how much Servants remember about previous times they were summoned is probably even more complicated and obtuse than it even needs to be. Something about how the place they 'return to' after being summoned technically exists outside of time and space, so they could know about things that haven't chronologically happened yet, but don't have any actual memories of the events themselves? I swear, the original Fate gave a whole detailed explanation on how it worked and I still don't understand it.

To explain why Rouge Lancer and Boss seem to have history, but not recognize each other has to do with a particular trait when it comes to Servants. When a Servant is summoned, it is not the actual person being summoned, but a copy of them from a metaphysical plane called the Throne of Heroes. The Throne records and stores the souls of those who committed great deeds that will be remembered throughout human history, for better or for worse. A Servant is a copy of that person summoned into one of the various Class Containers that fits into their accomplishments. For example, Rouge Lancer also qualifies as a Caster and Beserker, so it is possible to have three of the guy run around at the same time. When a Servant dies, it means the copy disappears from the World. Sometimes, some memories do stick and make it back to the original person on the Throne, leading to moments were two Servants that have met each other before can "recognize" each other. Obviously, there are exceptions such as Musashi who probably met very many Servants, and can most likely recognize them immediately, but she doesn't really care about that much, only if they can give her a good fight to improve her swordsmanship. Hopes this clarifies as well as give you some perspective of how the mechanics of the Fate Series works Nico.

Lancer and Boss did met in the original Fate Stay Night, but Servants are fragments of Heroic Spirits that generally don't remember previous summoning. FGO is an exception because of timey-whymey 5-dimensional reasons. Lancer held back Boss for a full day before dying. Them not liking each other on sight is a nod to this. edit: also Rogue Archer has a skill called Agni's Wrath which hints at his origins. Agni is a Hindu God.

Funny you compare Lancer to Grimmjow in the intro. On top Grimm's actor playing a few other characters in the Fateverse, Lancer's actor actually played another Espada, Nnoitra. You'll actually find a decent amount of Bleach VAs in this franchise if you look.

Nico i don't know if this was discussed but since you are this far and seeing most of the servants during your play through. For summoning servants it is pretty much a gacha on who you are summoning (pulling). Now there is a way to get a specific servant an example would be I am video game characters as a reference. If you wanted to summon cloud (ffvii) you would need the buster sword (this would be his relic) being used as a catalyst to summon him, and his preferred class would be saber obviously. However, he can be summoned as a caster technically but his best class would be saber. However, keep in mind because you are using the buster blade you also have a chance to summon zack or angeal because they were the previous owners of the weapon. It would also be the same principle if you wanted to summon link (zelda) the best relic to use would be the master sword. So to prioritise who you summon a relic of that hero would need to be used to guarantee who you want. If these are not used then the summoned servant will be one that most resonates with you the summoner.

Really am glad they got to make this game, it's great to see the franchise continue and this game so far has been delightful to watch the amount of mechanics expand onwards.

In the hope that you may dive further into Fate, I wont confirm if R.Lancer and BOss know each other. However, servants dont often remember the other times they are summoned, but those do leave something of "an impression" on them if something marking happened, call it a sense of deja vu. So, it doesnt matter if they meet in the past or in the future, R.Lancer wouldnt remember it, but he would get "a feeling" about the guy if the experience was marking in some way.

As someone who only got 15-ish volumes into Bleach 5 years ago, it's fun hearing Nico talk about it and have no idea of anything outside the basics and main characters. Btw, for any Bleach fans in the comments, would you recommend manga or anime? I wanna check out all the big shonens someday, and while manga is obviously easier and faster, I haven't heard much bad about the anime for Bleach. Does it have a lot of filler? I've heard the music is pretty good.
