GAME: Fate/Samurai Remnant
AUTHOR: Omega Force, Koei Tecmo
Fate/Samurai Remnant lets players play as Miyamoto Iori. The combat is hack and slash style with some similarities to musou gameplay, but it falls under the Action RPG genre with dodging and looking for openings as an important element. It features a wide array of stances, which the player character can switch between on the fly. Iori uses dual katanas, a widespread weapon for Samurai during the Edo period. Players can give commands to their servant, launching special attacks and combos. In certain situations, the game allows for full control of Iori's servant, as his weapons can't be used against other servants.

Quick note Nico, fictional/mythological people existed in the Nasuverse (which is Fate's setting), you've been seeing demons and ghosts so far, and within the world that's part of it, just by the 20th century they mostly disappeared, but at one point in time they did walk the Earth.

Jeanne is one of those Servants with a darker inflection known as an Alter, a dark interpretation of a Servant that runs parallel to their normal variant. The simplest descriptions of a Alter is: Malicious; Violent; And possibly just plain evil. Jeanne Alter is an abhorrent summon, as Jeanne's nature as a saint would not allow such a concept to exist, but due to outside factors she came to be a mired reflection of the former saint, on top of being a slightly different Fate waifu means the creators have something else to milk the fans with. Given that this Jeanne seams to still have the faith in God in her, her looking like her Alter version is possibly just cosmetic.

About Dorothea Coyett: She's not real. And with that outta the way, let's talk about her father instead, who was a real person! Frederick Coyett was an influential member of the Dutch East India Trading Company, and was the governor of Dutch Formosa (Taiwan) until Koxinga (Zheng Chenggong) liberated it. He had very little opinion of the Chinese, and his underestimating of them lead to him retreating back to Europe

Have a fun non-spoiler tidbit this game doesn't tell you that other media does: Servants don't need to sleep, eat, or drink and if a Servant does do these things it's just to enjoy the sensation of it. So Saber is basically making Iori waste funds on them that don't need to be spent and is sort of why they get upset when Iori says he's tired and needs to rest.
@natchu96
@natchu96 9 месяцев назад
It also does slightly help with mana conservation slightly, I think, but that rarely ever makes a significant difference unless your ability to supply magical energy to your servant is so crippled in whatever manner (and don't want to have them just eat human souls or something) that you are desperate for every ounce of juice you can save. If you have remotely functional magic circuits or even some leylines to work with you ought to be more than good. For the most part though, yeah it's a waste of money.

Not a spoiler, but servants do not need to eat or sleep! However, many servants still do, because it's something they're used to from life or it's something they actually enjoy. They only need magical energy for sustenance - which is basically sent to them through the command seal slowly over time (like wireless charging) If they run out of magical energy from using too many powerful attacks, they may need some immediately - and the best way to get it? Fluids of a human. Could be blood or... well, that. Remember, Fate was an eroge at first!

So nico a while back you were talking about how expensive all of the jewel magecraft was. thats actually part of the lore. Iori is literally purchasing rubies (for flame magic) and amber (for healing), which he then stuffs full with mana to cast spells way above his normal output level a novice mage. those gems are then immediately disintegrated when the spell is cast. its also the games explanation for the discrepancy why real world history iori was rich as fuck because here he in fact spent all his money on shiny rocks he threw at peoples dumb stupid faces.

Just as a small reminder, Iori has pieced a few things together about Saber over the course of the game, outside of those flashes of Saber's past. Two important details he has determined is that Saber is Japanese and is from a period of Japanese history where money existed but was rare. So, while I certainly appreciate your attempts at guessing who Saber is and find them funny, keep in mind what clues have been provided so you don't bark up the wrong tree. Iori is certain that Saber is Japanese. Speaking of figuring out names, I just successfully guessed who the Rogue Berserker is based on the name of one of the moves, so that's neat.

@joelsasmad

It is kinda complicated by the fact that Fate takes place in a magical world to begin with where things that re mythical in our world are historical there. King Arthur, Solomon, and Gilgamesh were all genuine people who did exist in this world before becoming servants. Separately there are servants who are fictional characters. An interesting example is Vlad the impaler. The historical guy did in fact exist both in reality and in the Fate universe and was just a guy, but he has been so conflated with Dracula that as a servant he is a vampire.... which again is a whole other can of worms since an equivalent of vampires do exist in this setting.

Rogue Archer actually gave you a big hint towards his identity at 28:32. He mentions that Iori's skill is like a "Kshatriya who has survived countless battlefields". The Kshatriya were the warrior caste of India. So this firmly establishes that Rogue Archer is someone from Indian history (or Indian myth). Also, skill names usually hint toward who a Servant is.

Mind you, you *did* kinda find Shousetsu. They were behind a heavy magical barrier in Kanda, which stopped you short, with no easy way past it. Basically, they're in a highly protected location, and it would take a lot of effort to break through. You also found Chiemon and Lancer's base, but they ran off after fighting them. As for the setting... It's Tokyo 400 years ago. The areas are actually based on historical information. If you know Tokyo, then a lot of the tourist attractions, like the giant Buddha, shouldn't be too hard to piece together. Which most English-speaking players won't.

The problem with trying to figure out the names of this game's servants is that most of them are japanese or at least from Asia, so for example in the case of the big snake, the game already called it Orochi, so it's not the hydra but a different big snake with a lot of heads, basically the japanese hydra. One very nice bonus of being a Fate fan is that you learn A TON about history and mythology, even though a lot of people joke about how innacurate and anime most servants are, you do still learn a lot and even more importantly it makes you want to go read more about them. In my case, I didn't care about mythology at all before playing Fate or know much besides the basic stuff, but now after more than 10 years being a huge fan I'd say I know more about the topic than the average person even if I'm not an expert. So yes, unironically Fate can be very educative, even if it also ruins some google image searches when trying to find the original and not the servant version, which I find hilarious lol

So, to explain a bit about Saber's sword. What you saw was the Yamata-no-Orochi, a powerful and dangerous dragon god that was slayed by the god Susanoo. That sword that Saber was using in it's unleashed state is teh blade that Susanoo pulled from it's corpse, a blade that would eventually be known as the Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi. It's one of the three legendary treasures of Japan and are relics passed down to the emperor's of Japan's royal line. Meaning what Saber did was effectively unleash the power of the serpent from the blade. It's also a huge potential hint as to whom Saber is, as only a few known users of the blade exist in Japanese history/legend. It also shows just how powerful Saber is given that it is a divine relic (an object imbued or made with divine power), making it one of the more powerful artifacts in history. Puts into perspective why Saber was so damn confident about being able to one shot people with it, huh?

So to be a bit more clear on Servant memories: Most of the time they forget about their other summons, if however they experienced an impactful enough experience, they'll remember it such EXTRA Caster, Saber, and Classless remembering EXTRA's main protagonist: Hakuno Kishinami in FGO when normally they shouldn't. Other special thing like Personal Skills (which this game doesn't really have despite all Servants canonically having them), NPs, or Class Skills such as Faker in FGO remembering a previous summoning due to exceptions like that.

So something about repeat summonings. It used to be very true that they would not remember previous summonings. That is only mostly true now though. It’s actually fairly common for servants to hold lingering instincts even if they don’t retain full memories. That’s more or less what you saw with Rogue Lancer and Boss. Sometimes due to skills specific to a servant or maybe severe enough trauma (I don’t know) some servants have retained memories. But it is remarkably rare. Usually it’s doesn’t amount to more than “Do I know you from somewhere?” “Of course you know your king mongrel! Bow before my glory!” “No I don’t know you, but I hate you already.”

When it comes to guessing Servant identities, if you don't know a lot of mythology, it might help to think of Personas. Especially the more humanoid ones. It also helps to take into account clues like their style of dress or the language seen in their attacks, and what country of origin that might be pointing to. Like someone decked out in full Japanese armor like Rider is probably not going to be European.

On top of the whole "pale skin, golden hair" thing. Some designs can be very misleading, as they have little to do with the style at the time, or common interpretations. Cu's bodysuit isn't Celtic (though not dissimilar to SMT's design), Jeanne d'Arc definitely didn't wear that, Musashi wasn't a woman, etc. Though Nico should be starting with Asia since he doesn't know about all of the exceptions.

Japanese clothing, too old to know what paper is, water powers, clearly has a connection with Yamatai no Orochi and so on. Not to mention, who could possibly be so powerful to slay countless gods if not *another* god? I guess that was the problem, it was too obvious to be the real solution to a mystery.

Nico is surprised when a Berserker that holds little else to be hitting like a freight train. A Berserker's whole thing is to hit with enough force to send the enemy Servant to the next continent, while being nigh impossible to take down. The flip side to this is that they lack any other abilities outside of pure destructive force, and tend to teeter on the line of being mindlessly violent (as a Berserker is cursed with "Berserker Madness" when summoned), making them a highly possible danger to everyone around them, including their own Master with how uncontrollably violent they can become.

So just a quick recap of the servants, because it looks like we're about to get in the thick of it. There are 15 heroic spirits in total: 7 regulars and 8 rogues, which means 2 of each class and Gilgamesh being the extra class: Ruler. Saber: Rice-loving dork who has connection with water, snakes and killing. Master: Iori Archer: Zhou Yu. Master: Zheng Lancer: Twin lance-wielding goth lady, who's totally not Joan of Arc. Master: Chiemon Berserker: Mommy Musashi. Master Dayu Rider: Dank masked samurai on a horse. Master: Yui Assassin: Snake dude, who was probably wearing the basket disguise before. Master: Dorothea Rogue Ruler: Gilgamesh Rogue Saber: White masked samurai on a horse Rogue Archer: Not a Quincy Rogue Lancer: Fan favorite dog-bro Rogue Berserker: Master of grandslamdunking Rogue Rider: Nico's worst nightmare Rogue Assassin: Weird jacket dude. Up to this point, we have yet to see any of the Casters, be it rogue or regular. Both Saber and Assassin have connections with snakes, though I don't know if they're connected. Rider and Rogue Saber have very similar design, so they might be connected. A bit of a note when trying to guess heroic spirits: Their outfits are usually connected with their place of origin, although there are exceptions (Gilgamesh, fx. has had different outfits throughout the franchise, but his most iconic is a golden suit of armor).

In Fate there is a joke/saying/meme about Sabers that if you don't fire beams from your sword in any manner then you aren't a real Saber (There is also another joke that many Sabers and not Sabers as well have the same exact face structure as the first saber in the series (the one from Stay Night) that the term "saberface" was formed, ironically Iori's Saber seems to have the same type of face) In fact, this joke is so engraved into the Fate community that in Fate Grand Order, the Gacha game, the profile of the Saber version of Souji Okita (one of the most iconic swordsman of Japan who doesn't fire beams as part of its NP or attack animations) that it has flavour test saying "No, I don't fire beams". that's how deep the joke goes.

For me personally, the Servants are hard to guess in this game mostly just because I'm unfamiliar with them. I figured out exactly one Servant that hasn't been in another Fate story. Other than that one, I only knew the ones that have been in other Fate media (Gilgamesh, both Lancers, and Aria). In very large part due to my unfamiliarity with some of the less well known Japanese stories and Chinese stories in general because so many of them are Japanese and Chinese.

so there's a few ways to gauge where a servant comes from, but a good one for the less mythologically and historically inclined, their appearance is another useful hint. Servants can basically disguise themselves in regular ass outfits approproate for the era if they need to, but their standard appearance tends to be unchanged (and is what they'll be wearing during battle). Of course this isn't always the case cause this is anime but you can make a rough guess as to where they came from at least. Like a Japanese heroic spirit is PROBABLY not gonna wear a greek toga or european armour. Again, this is VERY anime so this isn't a hard rule but its something i've noticed at least.

So Dorothea reveals herself as "a Mage of the Clock Tower". That is, in fact, the London Clock Tower. This location is kind of the center of the "nasuverse" (Fate+Tsukihime/Melty Blood+Garden of SInners+Witch on the Holy Night), being the main institute of magic research and authority. Think Harry Potter but not transphobic. The Clock Tower politics are kind of the lynchpin for the timeline of when stuff takes place - who are the presiding Lords, what policies they've enacted, etc. There's a LOT to it, it's so fleshed out. You won't hear much about it in this game because it's pretty much exclusive to the Western World of magecraft, but it is a reminder there's a whole universe this game is connected to.
