Hello. I'm a 31 year old man. Grew up butchering cows and still do a few every year. And I've always felt a level of conviction about the throw away stuff. I've only recently been interested in this process. This is an amazing way to use every bit. Thank you for posting.
I process cow offal for my dogs’ food from local slaughterhouses and keep the best bits of fat for rendering. I’m a fourth-generation (that I know of!) pure tallow soap maker!
As a chemist the emergency vinegar wash is quite correct, Lye is Sodium Hydroxide, it is very very caustic and will cause chemical burns of a very serious nature if not promptly washed off, Vinegar is even better, Lye is very hydroscopic so it absorbs water fast from the air.
I made your soap recipe this morning! I just found your videos this week and you have opened my eyes to a wonderful world of tallow! 😄 Since I found you, this week, I sourced, bought, and rendered 35 lb of beef fat, and I’ve made your healing balm, drawing balm, whipped and solid tallow balm, and this soap recipe. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, and Including such great recipes! I am hoping to make your recipe for shampoo bars next, I just need to get some castor oil for it. ♥️
Best teaching video I’ve watched in years! Thank you for getting to the point. Most how to videos the person loves their voice so much it takes 45 minutes to explain every detail they could find to sound intelligent meanwhile you forget what you wanted to do. You are the best!
I love the analogy the snow falls on the lake. I could never remember which goes in first. Thank you so much. I love your videos, I also love the background Music.
Wow! I just made my first soap yesterday, and my second and third today, pure coconut oil the first one because I didn't want to wait 4 weeks to try it. Then I started to surch for a recipies with tallow because I know someone with sheep and think I can get as much tallow as I want from him. And then I found you 😁 so thank you! I'm so gonna watch more of your videos.
Hi Marisa, I just discovered you, nice to meet someone else interested in natural and healthy alternatives to the commercial products out there. These came out great, well done.
Thanks! Had a recipe for a mixed oil tallow soap, but this is what I was looking for. Tip: for mixing lye, get the container up higher, it helps keep your head back instead of over the top of the gases that come off.
I just made my first batch of tallow soap to your recipe. It is really warm like you said it would be. I made pure tallow with lavender and lemongrass essential oils. :~)
Wonderful video Marissa. I'm one of those intimidated by lye, and you gave me confidence to use it. Makes so much sense to take it outside. Thank you for sharing all the knowledge with us!
This is the second video of yours I've watched today, and one I hope I get to put into use. I have a bag or two of deer tallow saved up for rendering and "crafting" with. I'm going to start with candles and see how it goes, but I'd like to get to soap eventually!
I’ve never made soap so I’ve been watching videos to learn. In one of the videos the woman used ice cubes in her water to help keep the lye cool. Have you ever tried that? I haven’t seen anyone else do that so I was curious if that actually works.
Not to step on the creator's toes but lye is necessary to turn the fat into soap. You can make your own from wood ashes if you like, but all soap has had lye in it. When cured, all the lye has been used up, so there is none left in the finished product.
The saponification process requires a substance with a strong enough alkalinity (pH 13 or 14) to break the ester bonds of the fat molecules. Lye is the most commonly available substance with a pH that high. Any others would be just as dangerous or even more dangerous, as that's simply a feature of a very high pH. If you can't buy lye where you live, you can make it out of hardwood ashes.
Thank u very much I have been having difficulty that if I should use tallow for my soap it may not come out well am really grateful for u sharing ur recipe

Yes, actually I've been making soap for a while and use the "hot" method as you do. I've used many different methods and materials to try different things out. I've used lard before, but usually not any more than 60%. Most of my soap is coconut oil based, although lately I've been using a lot of olive oil. I've found that if I blend it longer while it's in the crock pot that it puts more air in the mixture and the soap suds better. However, the soap will not last as long as it's not as dense. Anyway, I really enjoy it. Thanks for the videos!
@@MrViolaracer392 Nice! It sure is fun to experiment 😊 My favorite recipe is one that uses a blend of tallow, coconut oil, and olive oil. Coconut oil lathers really nicely, olive oil adds great conditioning properties, and tallow add hardness to the bar, which makes it last longer. They all add good cleansing properties. Thanks for watching!
@@MrViolaracer392 Using more lard would help with hardness and making the bars last longer. Do you use soapcalc.net to design your recipes? I like it because it tells what properties the different oils will give to the finished bar of soap 😊
I think what you are doing is divine. Thank you so much for sharing. God bless you very much. Keep preaching what you believe. The Bible says " no one buys of their merchandize anymore. Thank you.
Thank you. Looking forward to making this today. Can I pack the soap in individual bags while letting cute for 4 weeks or does it need to be sitting out without covering? Ty again.
Very nice demonstration...this entails a good bit of work and time and accessories but ill try making a batch eventually here...appreciate all the valuable info..
I LOVE your channel, that i just discovered today!! Thank you for sharing all your information!! Question: do you use your immersion blender, crock pot and other kitchen items strictly for soap and other tallow creations, or do you also use them for cooking and the usual food prep, as well? I have the equipment but was wondering if I need kitchen stuff specifically for this.
I used the equipment today I used for making soap then just really cleaned it good. :~) Wear gloves even when washing anything that touched the trace. :~)
We are getting 1/2 beef cow soon for the freezer. I will be getting all the suet and fat (my brother doesn’t want his 1/2) I want to make use of that by making soap. Can I add herbs or essential oils to this recipe? You are the first person that I have found who is straightforward and makes it seem very doable! I’m happy to find you. ♥️👍🙏🇺🇸🤓
Yay! And thank you so much! Yes, you can absolutely add herbs or essential oils. If you look at my other soap recipes, you'll see examples of how muchbumblebeeapothecary.com/how-to-make-tallow-soap-recipe-diy-tutorial/ essential oil I use :)
Fantastic. I’m a beef farmer from New Zealand and I’m about to get a beast slaughtered. I will be asking for all the fat so I can make these wonderful products. Thank you. Much appreciated!
I am super super excited seeing your channel for the first time. I just subscribed because u have made my day. I have one question - can this serve as a bathing soap?
Hello, just discovered your DIY videos. We grow our own beef and pigs. I rendered a lot of the leaf lard from the pigs and suet from the cows. Being retired now, I have more time, but also and needing to watch my spending. So was on the lookout for a simple soap recipe. Looking forward to trying your tallow soap. Would you also have a recommendation for an additive that will help with poison ivy rash? I am highly allergic to poison ivy. It tends to find me when I least expect it. Much thanks in advance!
Impatients Balsamina is the only thing that works with my poison oak. They say jewel weed, too. I grow Balsamina everywhere, you can even eat it. Jewel weed grows wild.
Really enjoyed this instructional video. Just found bushed rendering my first tallow. I’m excited to do some Soaping with it. Blessings to you and your family. 🦋
💯♥️♥️♥️ Thank You for; spreading Knowledge & ultimately Love!! I had Brain SURGERIES recently & have Autoimmune Disease's. Large TUMOR was removed after I had a seizure at a park~. Thank God it wasn't the Highway~ Highway don't care~ ,♥️ Tim MCGRAW Gaslighter~ Dixie Chicks I will watch your videos & learn! Thank you!!
It was quite easy. I will keep the latex gloves on the whole time once I add the lye next time. As it trace is quite drying for my skin and it stung my skin a little bit too :~)
Nice work I would also recommend using a water bath of cool water or some ice to keep the caustic soda from steaming up and breathing that poisonous gas into your lungs or ware a breather. Just being outside is not enough.
Hi Marisa! I have two questions from this video: 1, why do you have to wait 4 weeks before actually using the soap?? 2, is there a way to infuse the whole herb instead of essential oils into the soap?? Thank you !
I've just found your channel and blog and I'm hooked! I've signed up at your blog and subscribed here. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge Marisa. xoxo
Great video :) thank you for sharing your art of soapmaking ... It's such an interesting process. I love soap ... Keep at it , seems you have it down very well. Thanks again
Hi there! Thank you for this recipe! If I want to use your recipe but add activated charcoal and coconut oil, will that change any of the other measurements in your recipe? Thank you :)
I'm so scared of the lye but I've been saving all of my beef fat in the freezer that i trim from large cuts of beef that I purchase from my local warehouse store because I can't stand wasting the commodity. I'm rendering Tallow today and tomorrow plan to make soap. I am scared but watching your video has made me feel like I can do this!
Great instruction video and am new to the tallow world. When you render the tallow, do you purify using water and salt to remove the “meaty” aroma? Sorry, I can’t seem to find your recipe. Can you please share it again. Looking forward to watching more of your videos 🙏
I love that this doesn’t have a ton of ingredients! Could you use this as a shampoo bar too? If not, do you have a tallow shampoo bad recipe? Thanks! Edit: found your other video for a shampoo bar.
Hi Marissa, I’ve been making soap with a blend of tallow, lard, coconut oil, and olive oil. When my soap is curing the top turns matte white/chalky looking (for lack of a better way to describe it). I cover it with a heavy towel right after pouring so it cools slowly.
it's technically soap when it reaches trace so a regular washing to clear off any bits is all that's necessary. I've used the same crockpot for soap and cooking.
Hi Marisa, I just wanted to say thank you so much for being so generous with your information 🙏 when leaving the soap bars to cure for 4 weeks do they need to be covered with something or left uncovered? X
@@htaylor2553 I ended up making the soap and it does not clog shower drains. I've been making it for a year now with no clogs. The lye/water reaction as is described in the video does prevent this.
I’m making my first batch ever. Pretty excited. Non soap question: the gunk that strains off and then scraped off, during the second/third round… I hear dogs love it or even chickens. Do you just give it to them as is or do I rinse again to remove salt or do I need to cook further? I have grand-dogs. So I’m dog and soap ignorant. 🤣
Never, ever, EVER use vinegar on a raw, soap burn! As soon as I saw this advice, I realized you have not been making soap very long. In the event of a raw, soap burn, use fresh, cool, running WATER. WATER ONLY. I’ve been making soap for twenty-five years. While vinegar is an acid, and an acid will neutralize an alkaline base (lye aka sodium hydroxide) this should never be done on the skin. Fresh, running water only! I just began watching your channel and I love so many things about it, but watching your soap making methods is a bit cringe-worthy. Please, PLEASE stop using that crock pot, it is not necessary. Filling it to the brim with raw soap is so unsafe, my jaw dropped. I would hate for a new soap maker to overfill his/her container with RAW SOAP and spill it everywhere. I have too many additional corrective comments (ex: leave lye water outside for 10 minutes as a measurement 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️) , and I dislike sounding so critical but please Marisa, do more research on CP soap making before dispensing what could be, very dangerous advice. I am genuinely expressing concern for your welfare and the welfare of new soap makers. Thank you, however, for this wonderful channel.
Will it foam? I mean you haven't added any foaming agents etc, & what will be the shelf life of the bar? What's the smell of the tallow bar normally? Thanks for making the video
Hi I love your videos have a question 🙋♀️ if the lye is so harmful is this not harmful to our skin? Can the lay be replaced with something else ? Thank you
No lye, no soap. It is a necessary ingredient. When lye and fat are mixed, a chemical process called "saponification" takes place. The end result is neither lye nor fat -- it is soap. All soaps are made with lye. (Note that not all commercial bars are true soap. Some are called "beauty bars," "cleansing bar," etc. and are detergents)
Any tips for cleaning up afterwards? Are the utensils, crockpot and blender still safe to use for cooking food? Thanks for sharing. You are an incredible person.
Thank you so much for the kind words! 😊 Great question. I like to neutralize everything in a sink full of dishwater with some white vinegar added, then run it all through the dishwasher (separately from other dishes). After that, they should be safe to use again for food prep 😊
Hi! Thanks for your tutorial! I am totally new to this soap magic. Right now I am doing some research to gain confidence and finally try to make my own soap. I would like to know if you can measure pH on this process? When is the right moment to measure the pH? What is the ideal ph on this so it feel gentle on the skin? We live in a humid-hot area (Greetings from Venezuela!) Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge :)
Hello! Nice to meet you! I have never had the need to test ph when making soap, so I don’t really know the protocol for it. You should be fine following the same or similar recipe. 😊
Great video, thank you! I would like to incorporate some pine tar and juniper berries into a batch of tallow soap. I was curious if you've tried that or had any suggestions. Thanks!
That's great information. does temperature impact anyway the quality of soap? and if i can combine tallow with olive oil can improve the quality of soap? Thank you
Thanks! Temperature does matter somewhat, it helps everything come to trace in the right amount of time if you pay attention to temperature like I show. Yes, you can use other oils. I have another video where I show how to make soap with tallow, coconut oil, and olive oil 😊
Great video. I render my own tallow for cooking and skincare creams, but haven't made soap yet. This looks easier than I thought. Would you say that tallow soap is good for dishes and laundry as well? I love having a big block of soap next to my kitchen sink. Thank you
