I think the 'Tech' is marketed towards professional shops and oil change houses or bulk purchasers. They probably cheapened the filter for a price point, but I really doubt it costs that much for a silicone valve. Never seen that Tech in a retail store but I haven't looked for it. I probably wouldn't buy one of those but I'm sure it's 'good enough' as they say. I think it's mostly for marketing.

Great point Vince! I don't go to the quick lube places, and I wonder if anyone has seen these Tech oil filters used at these places? I'll pin your comment so it sits on top. Thanks!

Thanks Pete! It looks like Wix and Purolator are becoming more and more like Fram. They figure they'll capture a bigger segment of the market if they make more filters with 1 tiny change. A base level filter with a silicone ADBV and one without. It's also an easy way to split the market for ID'ing DIY'ers with the red can vs pro service and silver can. Seen other companies do it too with other stuff. Different package, same product. I believe Fram had a 'Core' filter that was nothing but an orange can sold to different a customer base (shops).

@@WhipCityWrencher Thanks Pete, I did see that one and it's how I remembered those filters were out there. I saw a Fram corporate video a while ago which was 10 years old and the Fram guy said they've been using those 'engineered' end caps since the '60's. That was an interesting tidbit. I always thought they came out with those in the '80's. There's a Fram corporate channel on youtube with a few videos from the Honeywell days. I do like the Titanium, just not the price. 25% off was a smokin' deal on those.

I bought a case of the tech filters because of the great price. Been running them on my Honda Civic and CRV. I do oil changes every 5K miles and have not had any problems with the Tech version. Some owners overthink these things. Just do on time oil changes and you won't have a problem..

My car has had the best results with the TSC purolator and Mobil 1 oil filters. I measure by how quickly the oil pressure light goes off. It's a older Honda and with almost any other brand of filter the light flickers once but with the 2 mentioned above the oil pressure is instant. Just something I've noticed. M1-104a and a pl14459 are what I use. I have a K&N so-1004 because I couldn't find my preferred ones and needed a oil change quickly so I chose the K&N. During winter cold starts it does blink once but that's fair since the 5w30 is probably starting to get a little thicker at these colder temps.

Both look to be good quality construction, and both still made in the US, a plus for sure. The Tech a jobber filter for shops, Red is retail oil filter. I didn't realize the Puro Red had a silicone adbv as standard now. It would be nice if the Red a bit lower priced, silicone adbv doesn't seem to justify price difference. Tech likely ok for 5k mile interval. I don't trust calling the CS lines, mostly they just read off a script, and not the most knowledgeable folks. 96.5% @20um would be consistent with what Red has long been, but they should put it on the box. I've been using a version of this same filter made from same factory, Bosch Premium 3323, better efficiency rating. Now I've found it. These are the same as the Mighty M4612 Engine Guard and T4612 (T stands for tech), except I believe both Mighty filters use a rubber drain back valve (based on watching videos of cut up filters). Mighty says 95 percent at 20 microns, just as the woman told you, so which is correct is hard to tell, but the difference is not significant in my opinion. They put the M version on my car the last oil change at a garage along with full synthetic oil, I believe, Mighty brand oil 0W20 (which seems to be made by Phillips). They did not tell me the brand on the invoice, but I am assuming Mighty brand since they used a Mighty filter. It is interesting how much people are influenced by a brand name. The jury is still out on what I will do next oil change. As I've said before, every weekend I do research on oil and filters, so I'm ready by my next oil change. I know so much more than when I started researching. An ex-Nissan engineer along with many who have formally studied oil say buy cheap oil (of the correct type and viscosity) and a cheap filter and change the oil often, every 3,000 miles. The change interval, they say, is more important than the brand. However, I will be influenced by how my car sounds and runs (which I recognize is subjective). Thanks for this video. I should add that getting the oil and filters from a garage, they charge me $2.00 more per quart and at least a dollar extra for the filter, so I'm not getting these cheap. But I can't change my own oil. I have a CVT, so I plan on being hyper-vigilant about oil and transmission fluid changes.
@WhipCityWrencher

I replaced the new purolator with the old motorcraft filter that I still had and the next morning, no ticking. I took off the filter the next morning and there was oil inside that wouldn't pour out. I called purolator and got no cooperation from the rep who wanted me to send their filter back at my cost for testing and IF they found it defective, they would issue me a refund for the cost of the filter only, not the postage. Never bought another purolator product again and never will. What seems weird is in the oil filter as well as in the engine, there's oil by-pass valves. Engines have oil pressures above the by-pass valve relief, which sounds like the valve would be open all the time when its running, which would help if pressures were too high. But if pressures are too low (say 10psi on a worn out engine), the by-pass valve won't open, the oil pump would have to work harder to push oil through the filter, which it can't (because the engine is worn out), and that would be a quick end to a worn out, but still able to run engine. Sorry for the long comment. 😁
@WhipCityWrencher
@WhipCityWrencher Год назад
I like to think of it this way, even if you have 40 psi of pressure in the system. If the oil can flow through the oil filter freely without back pressure going over the pressure of the bypass valve then it should not open.

If your filter sits stud mount up, the ADBV isn't even needed. That said, I've seen Nitrile go 10-12K(not on my vehicles) and be fine. Silicone is better long term, but for me, micron rating is what I care about.

Thank You! GT pretty much answered your question. I'll just add if I have a vehicle where the filter mounts horizontally I'll use a filter with a silicone anti-drain back valve. 95% of the time it probably won't matter but I did have a problem once on my daughter's car that had a nitrile rubber anti-drain back valve. It started making a start-up noise after a while. Her filters mounts horizontally.

If one reads bitog regularly, it's accepted that even in base/thread end up orientation, an adbv helps keep oil in the oil galleries above the filter. Nitrile should be good for most standard, (not extended 6k+mi.) intervals. Many quick lubes and shops use nitrile..

These oil filters cross with the HONDA # 15400-RTA-003, the BOSCH PREMIUM # 3323, and the FRAM ULTRA # XG7317. I would pass on the Purolators shown here -- in favor of any of the 3 filters mentioned above.

HHMMMMMMMMMM -- First call to Purolator says: "95% @ 20 Microns". Second call to Purolator says: "96% Holding Power" -- which has no technical meaning -- just marketing propaganda. The oil filter is passive. It has NO "power". The nearest we can get to the truth is: "95% @ 20 Microns" -- but no ISO test # is given. That's real decent for a cheap oil filter -- and a good deal for those with vertically-hung oil filters, which need NO ADBV. For these particular filters: Nitrile Rubber ADBV -- OCI = 3,000 miles. Silicone ADBV - OCI = 5,000 miles. 😁
