In the early to mid 90s, Grunge changed the entire musical landscape. Bands such as Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam began taking over the rock world, effectively killing hair metal and ushering in a new wave of angst. Grunge emerged in Seattle as a label to market these new bands finding success, while also having its own distinguishable sound.
Bands from elsewhere, such as Stone Temple Pilots, began finding themselves associated with the label of Grunge. Which has caused a lot of debate. Can Stone Temple Pilots be considered Grunge even though they weren't from Seattle? Personally, I think yes. Because the sound of their early records (Core, Purple) aligned almost perfectly with their Seattle contemporaries. They boasted the very same angst and raw feeling.
1994's Purple was one of the final huge successes of the Grunge movement, before the sub-genre faded away and newer bands took its place. Grunge or not, this is an iconic rock album. Containing huge rock staples such as "Interstate Love Song" and "Vaseline". In this video, I dive into the early history of Stone Temple Pilots, their debut Core and most importantly, Purple. The band's defining album that officially signaled the end of Grunge as we knew it.
