STP are the most underappreciated band of the 90s. It always bugged me how they were dismissed as Pearl Jam wannabes when not only did they sound nothing like Pearl Jam, the Deleo bros. were the most musically literate core of any band in that era. Add to that Weiland, who was the greatest frontman of that generation. It's nuts. And Purple? Their best album. Astoundingly good writing song to song. Only Superunknown and Radiohead's Bends/OK Computer reach the level of Purple for 90s Rock greatness.
Great video! I went through some songs I didn’t know before watching this. Great video! You cover so much ground seamlessly. Man, the “grunge” years flew by so quickly. With the more unknown bands going under the radar (or so we would like to have thought - terminally alternative 😂), STP was a commercially successful band you just couldn’t deny.
I don’t know if STP is grunge but they got lumped in with grunge because it was the most popular trend. Alice In Chains were a metal band that got pushed into grunge or marketed as grunge. I think STP is more sophisticated than grunge Dead and Bloated and Sex Type Thing are metal songs. Could a grunge band write Still Remains or Big Empty ? Nothing wrong with grunge but STP isn’t grunge to me.
I think they were the last real Straight Rockstar's. No gimmicks, No publicity stunts and not following trends chasing fame We had Supergroups and NuMetal But not ppl coming out of nowhere , no costumes, making eclectic music and not selling out to milk fame.
STP had a Grunge sound on Core, but they completely got away from that on Purple, and developed a unique sound that really didn't fit in any particular genre. I saw them three times with Weiland, and Velvet Revolver once. He was the most entertaining front man I have ever seen, and a talented singer as well. Much like Layne Staley, his death was all but inevitable, and it didn't shock me. I expected it to happen long before it did. Like many of the icons from the 90s, Scott had problems that went well beyond his drug addiction, and he never got the help that he truly needed. I am so sorry for him and his family, and I hope that they have all found peace. RIP Scott
9:46 big empty only made the soundtrack because the track that was originally meant for the soundtrack was called „only dying“ couldn’t be used, cause of Brandon Lee“s death
I'm not entirely sure I would call this a total grunge album (Core may have been more of that format, tho), but whatever you call this album, it was absolutely fantastic. While there were big songs off of this one, my favorites were always "Lounge Fly", "Superman With Silver Gun", and "Unglued". Being a fan from the beginning, I have always enjoyed this album the most in their disco. BTW, "The band quickly went from being Mighty Joe Young to Stone Temple Pilots overnight". Wait, no mention on that the STP originally stood for? 🤣😂
You can see the progression from the first album till Purple, and on until Tiny Music. Its not so much that the band got better at their craft, it was as if everyone in STP embraced the talent they had and found the freedom to be themselves.
