We are going to be resoleing my clogs tonight. it is time they have a bit of a facelift. we are adding a purple heart to the sole to make them more durable and add a splash of color. come for the live and ask your questions!

Back in my working career we used the sole material for Birkenstocks on special needs shoes. To help hold shape for glue up, shaping, finishing I used water filled balloons and baggies.

generally the softer the more it will conform to the surface of the floor

When you put leather on are you going to put it flesh side down or up? Why did you decide to put leather on the sole as opposed to blank wood? (I ask because I put shoo goo on mine, which last a long time on my leather shoes, but came off after about 3-5 shop sessions)

I glue the rough side tot he wood. the main reason for the leather is the bare wood is loud on the concrete. the leather is much quieter.

Could you cut a step in the rear and put in a piece of wood to bring it up to the level plane you need

I have a pair of wedges for the excact purpose of holding odd shapes @QUESTION: Have you ever planed merbau? When planing it creates a sticky dust (even with sharp blades) and it likes to stick to the mouth of your plane and clog it.. :) wax makes it even worse but oil helps the cause. So there are different situations to take into concideration for oil or wax as lubrication @ANOTHERQUESTION: are carving chisels meant to be used with a mallet?

I have never heard of merbau. sounds like something fun to play with. I might have to see if I can get a chunk of it some time. Most carving chisels are designed to be tapped. You do not hit them like you do with a mortising chisel just tap them along. this gives far more control then the constant force from the hand, but there are some cases where just using your hand s the ticket. and as your skill grows those happen more and more.

@@WoodByWrightHowTo Merbau isn't that special, it's used a lot in western europe for making door and window frames, it can last for years on its own, it's not that pretty so it's basicaly always painted. I will have some scraps if you are still interested. I don't know how to ship though and if I can afford it but if you're really interested I might be able to figure something out

Are all of your coats of shellac cut 50/50? Or are later coats full strength shellac?

yup they are all cut. shellac especially does not do well with any thick coats.

clogs aka wooden shoes originate from the Netherlands (Holland) as far as i know.. or i just learnt something new. In the Netherlands we call 'em klompen. And no, not everyone wears em :P
