I just take cuttings about 4 inch and stick them in potting mix, put them somewhere bright, but not direct sunlight and keep them moist. I can't imagine buying all of those products to boost my success rate a few percent. Even if it doubled the success rate, the amount of propagation material you can get from one pruning would still be enough for more vines than anyone could need. A prolific growing plant, at least here in Cyprus anyway.

I did some cuttings today to replace some pots that had other vines that did not survive the 'winter' in Palm Springs. I cut some of the passion fruit vines to just place in water, however after researching and viewing your input. it makes sense of the procedure to initiate root growth. Thanks for posting.

The spread of bad plant info on RU-vid is invasive (pun intended). Thankful to find someone who knows what they’re talking about and can speak to the science behind growing plants!
@reesaserik3759
@reesaserik3759 2 года назад
Passion flower grows crazy here in South East Texas. I planted one, and did not believe that it would spread as far as the info said. So I planted it next to the house -- bad idea. That sucker grabbed hold of the house and the vine grew all the way up to the top of the second floor. It also spread from the main vine and covered the windows. I let it be, because the tendrils do not cause damage. It was crazy. Fortunately, two more ended up popping up from the ground about 8 feet from the house --I am thinking maybe from roots. So I cut down the original vine, to the ground, and I cut it if it tries to sprout. The ones that popped up in the yard got huge also, but at least they are away from the house. This plant makes a gorgeous vine. The leaves are huge and a beautiful shade of green. The flowers on the vine I have, have gotten up to 3.5" in diameter and the whole flower is a beautiful purple. What I call the petals are purple and the fringe is a darker purple. Amazing, and it blooms non stop.

And last year at 35 out of NOWHERE I had a major want to grow those bright beautiful and weird plants/flowers from seed or cuttings…. Now I’m obsessed… ask my kids and hubby… they hate it which is weird and sucks…. It’s so interesting how everyone has their own cuttings mixture recipe, what they claim works “best” with cuttings…

At the end of this video you mentioned that the families will enjoy fruits by next year. That's great that your plants can bear fruit inside of a year! Unless of course I misunderstood. I think mine will take 3 to 5 years.
@CP-tl2sz
@CP-tl2sz 8 месяцев назад
Typically takes one year to grow a good root system that will produce growth and blooms. Easiest way is to dig some root in the fall and plant it for spring. Caution, these passion vines with an established and extensive root system, can become extremely vigorous growers to 20-30 feet and will take over your fence. Plant them in full sun. They do freeze but return in spring.

@@CP-tl2sz Omigoodness thank you. I did grow that vine and it gave fruit the first season, not a lot but some. Currently I have patio space alone but have my vine in a huge container. It’s approaching year 3 and I got about 40 Flowers this season and of those about half fertilized. There are two preying mantises in residence and they are scaring away/eating the pollinators. I don’t have the heart to kick them off my property so I go out there and hand pollinate the passion flowers. Thx for responding.

Hi Charles, great videos, thanks!! I have a question, I put my purple passion fruit clipping into cups as you show in your video, with a mixture of equal amounts of Vermiculite, sphagnum peat moss, and Perlite. It has been a couple of weeks now or more and they were doing fine until now, they seem to be turning brown and dying. I kept the water level about a quarter to half way up the cups and put Miracle Grow blue granules in the water every time I refilled it. Also, I see some green algae and some brown mold or something on top of the perlite. Am I killing them by adding Miracle Grow? Am I killing them by over watering them? Any ideas? Thank you, Raffio

@@HYEMP3KING I don't know what you did wrong, but you don't need fertilizer for cuttings, you want root growth, not foliage.
@darshanamaya
@darshanamaya 2 года назад
No peat moss in the beginning propagation of cuttings - that is likely what is rotting. He only uses vermiculite and perlite, until *after* they have roots and he transplants to the larger pot. Then they need the nutrition from the peat moss, not before. Also, I would skip the chemical fertilizer and if you like it, not use until the plants are actively growing with a good root system. Personally, I prefer fish emulsion and more natural fertilizers. But not at all when rooting.

Good job with the propagation. Thanks for the informative video. I see that you trimmed the vine to control the directions it grows and for propagation. But may i know how do you know where to trim so that it doesnt affect fruiting? Do you prune only in spring or? Before flowering or after? Does the vine fruit on new shoot growth? Thanks.
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 6 лет назад
Hello Au0rey, I have pruned in both Fall & Spring.... and many of the vines I pruned in the Fall failed to grow in the spring. It is as if I removed too many of the "solar panels" (the leaves) during the coldest and shortest light days of the year, that the vines quickly failed following pruning. The best results are to prune once the vine becomes "active" in the spring, and after the last chance of frost has passed. Even if there are flowers starting, prune in early spring... and the plant will grow, grow, and grow.... with flowers pushing out on the new growth only.... So the more you cut, the more organized and fruitful your vines will be! Please keep me posted on your passion fruit growing successes! And be sure to create a few cuttings in-ground or in pots, just in case the parent vine dies... As the parent only lives an average 7 years. So be prepared to replace with a new, genetically identical productive and delicious variety. Good luck! Charles

Thanks so much! Hmmm sounds tricky to prune. It's spring for us now and I am not sure what it means by active as the vine is evergreen and has lots of new shoots before spring. I might take some photos before pruning a few shoots to see what happens after that. Thanks Charles!

Hello, I am in Portland Oregon. I'm starting a wellness garden for my nonprofit. I thought a passion fruit would be a great addition. However, I'm terrified if it. I have the Blue Bouquet Passion vine. I swear it doesn't like my yard. it very shaded. I see you have very hardy looking leaves, mine are very dainty and fragile. the only strong part are the tentacles. It's about a year 6 months old. I'm so desperate that I followed this video and propagated as you instructed, about 5 cuttings. I even created little tents for moisture... t Should I put manure in it's pot? I see some yellow leaves, I pick them off and it looks pekid and weak😭... I'm scared to kill it. It's raining now.. can they drown? Help me please!

Hello Black Mental Health Oregon, Keep up the good work!!! I do not recommend adding any manure (or compost) until after their is evidence of roots. The original leaves may go from green to yellow.... But hang in there... Hopefully the stem is still green and will produce some new leaves as the cuttings root. Then, I would recommend that you transplant to a larger pot or in-ground. Your plants can drown if you do not have holes at the bottom of the cup/ container to allow for the excess moisture to pass. You may want to consider taking 2-3 cuttings indoors where it may be warmer and you have more control on moisture. Please keep me posted on your successes! Charles :-)

I have one I started 3 months ago and this high heat in Phoenix seems to be burning out. Today I put shade screen over it hoping to stop its demise. ?? I water it every day in this 115' temps.

I had a great harvest last yr well 2001 this yr. I see a lot of dead vines, my question is should I remove all the dead vines. There is a lot of new growth so I don’t know if it’s ok to remove the seamingly dead vines or should I just leave it alone ? Please help it the first of march and last yr it was full of fruit in April. I watch you a lot great videos and good information. Thanks
