Push Industries and Unior Tools Fork Seal Drivers - They're all the same, right?!

Pretty specific video showing the difference between two fork seal drivers and why perhaps the Push Industries version is better than most out there. Yes, it costs more, but in this video you'll see that if I had bought it to begin with, I'd have saved a few dollars.
Short version: The Push Industries is stepped so that you can't drive the flangeless seals beyond the tops of the lower legs. As far as I know, other seal drivers, including the Unior tools one, don't accommodate this. In addition, the relief channel on the Push version is larger so that the top of the fork seal and energizing spring doesn't get crushed as you hammer it into the lowers.
In the long run, doing my own lower leg service will save me more than taking it to a shop, so I'm glad I learned how to do this. Unfortunately (or fortunately) this lesson cost me about $60 more than it needed to.

They have now updated the Union Seal tool to be like the Push industries fool proof way. You can tell the 2022 version because it has a flat head

Hi guys! Thanks @fusabike for your contribution. I need to replace my seals on my FOX Permormance Elite 36 GRIP2 fork (year 2020 - 29" - 160mm). I would like to try the SKF dual-compound seals which from what I understand do not have flanges. I was reading about the problems with the old UNIOR 1702 model but it seems that the new one (627757 - 36mm) has now been updated and compatible with seals with and without flanges. Also, they have created two distinct versions for 35 and 36mm. Question: have any of you tried this new one model with SKF seals or similar in type? (@whitedragon101 do you have any experience with this?) Thanks for your time! Alex

Thank you, Ryan, for putting this helpful/informative video together, as I'm currently in a market for a seal driver tool for my '18 Fox 36. I've looked at Unior tool ($17 - 35mm/36mm), Fox tool ($35 - newer 36mm #398-00-772 with pilot; NOT older 36mm #398-00-512 without pilot), and PUSH tool ($43 - 36mm), and RWC tool ($49 - 35mm/36mm). Also, I'm looking at a replacement seal kit from an installation perspective. PUSH seals ($38 - still a good-ol' flanged design) seems like a no-user error design, which I'll buy most likely, vs FOX seals ($30 - flangeless that could be pushed in too deep) vs RWC Enduro HY-Glide seals ($31 flangeless that could could be pushed in too deep). I've found the difference between Unior tool (flangeless-seal no-step diameter) vs PUSH tool (flanged-seal stepped diameter), but no such specific info on Fox tool that I can find on internet. As such, PUSH tool works on either flanged or flangeless seals without user error, while (I think?) Unior tool could still work without user error if with flanged seals (ie. PUSH seals). Also, conceptually I don't like those 35mm/36mm-combo tools, so Unior & RWC tools are out. So, definitely PUSH seals for me, and either PUSH tool (safest bet) or Fox tool (if I can find info on its diameter soon). Anyone know about Fox tool diameter (ie. whether it has a stepped stop like PUSH tool)? Thanks for letting me think aloud here. Cheers!

Hiroshi Yamagishi my pleasure! I find these comments a helpful place to share ideas and thought process! I think the Push stuff is great, wish I could afford to throw the whole catalog at my bike but it is not to be! Enjoy the ride!

Yes, I totally agree on a practical/economical aspect as well. So, since only either seals or tool needs to be error-proof at minimum (both is nice but not necessary), on second thought I've decided to go with error-proof flanged-design PUSH seals (+$8) and cheapest Unior tool (-$26) combo. Basically, something (or "anything") with pilot to align straight, since the seal flange will do the stopping. Will let you know how it goes... Thanks again for this video!

I used the Unior guide insertion tool a couple of nights ago and seated the first seal in too far. You should be able to remove/adjust them with a 19mm (or 3/4) open-end wrench without damaging them. The spring around the top needs removed first before prying up with the wrench. Just don't forget to reinstall the spring before putting the lowers back on. I was able to gently pry up on the seal working my way around the circumference to get it above flush and then reinstalled it to the correct height.

I have the Unior and it works just fine. You're right with needing to pay extra attention while installing the seal but personally I'm fine with it. Other than the price I don't want to spend the space to store these monsters. But great information for anyone wanting this information.

Thanks for watching and commenting. I agree, if I had more experience with seal drivers I might not fuss too much about the Unior or Fox versions, but the Push one just “made life easier” for a guy like me with limited patience! Thanks again and happy to hear the Unior works great in the right hands!

This exact thing just happened to me during my fork service. I reached out to Unior and this was their response: Hi there, our current dust seal drivers don’t have a stopping point and need some caution when installing non flange dust seals. I just got the push industries version which has the stopping point. Hopefully this works as my other seals were driven too deep and ruined by the unior driver.

EXFIL123 Sounds like you had the same experience I did using the Unior Tools version. Personally I don’t see how this tool could be very good for shops either... simply too easy to leave the seal slightly high or slightly low and never really know, and then also slightly askew. The Push is dead in straight and in the mark every time, and built sturdy...very pleased with it!

@@fusabike i think the unior drivers were designed for seals with flanges.... push tool looks much better though, idiot proof is the way!

thx for sharing, great video. 👌 I probably would be able to do a perfect job, but I prefer to have a idiot proof tool anyway. so nice to see Push industries has a tool that is idiot proof. I had to share this.

Fox recommends putting the seal until the edge is not visible from the front. If is it the case, the Push tool is not correct.

Albert Margarit this is interesting to know! I’ll have to see what my shop says about longevity as they use Push seal drivers.

Thank you for the information, I already got burned once with FOX old tool (Bad design that's not working), so this is very helpful. Can you tell the name of the spoon tool to get the seals out or link to the product? Thank you!

do you know if the fox driver can push the seal in too far?
@fusabike
@fusabike 4 года назад
jamble7k I don’t have experience with the Fox driver specifically. If it doesn’t have a stepped lip, then it’s likely yes, you can drive the seal in too far, but honesty If have to look at the driver and use it to know for sure.
