Do you want to run an ultra in 2021 as pain-free as possible or learn how to get through those really tough, painful patches? Get hard won advice from athletes and experts on pushing through the pain to find new limits you never thought yourself capable of in this short film, including record-breaking trail runners Jon Albon, Camille Herron, John Kelly. Thanks to all the awesome interviewees that share their hard won knowledge and training advice in this film at the National Running Show 2020.
Sorry about the sound for some clips - please bear with. I do have some whizzy new wireless interview microphones now but this was last year when using a very temperamental mic, so there is some very frustratingly un-dimmable background noise in some, but the tips from the interviewees are worth persevering!

trust your training. things come and go in waves. however you are feeling it always feels like that feeling wont go away unless you stop...but if you have trained you know it will go away so keep moving! stay hydrated, eat, walk some, rest a little, keep moving forward. remember it is a great privilege to be able to do these things! having a cry is great advice, i'll have to try that :`)

Any tips for when it's just going bad? I did 33mules today in prep for my first 50 in a months time. After 3miles I felt aweful and was buckets if sweat. I decided to push on and get used to running in a bad state. By the marathon mark I was a mess but 50mins of my usual marathon time. Obviously I'm expecting to be slower than a pushed marathon but doing it 50mins slower you'd think I'd feel better 😂 maybe I'm just coming down with something but how do you deal with that lol Ps still doing your stretching! 🙂

Hey! I think you did really well first of all so give yourself a pat on the back for completing. I would defo not compare a trail ultra to any marathon time, especially for your first few - you need to get the experience of enjoying super slow ultras under your belt before you aim for a fast time on one and put all that pressure on yourself. My advice would be to start much slower than you think (as per this film here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xbq1duLU2MY.html) and then to listen to Ian Sharman's training and pacing advice here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sJxkGCGfr0I.html it's for 100 miles but it really does apply to all long distances. You're doing great! Keep up the awesome running. And well done about the stretching too! I recommend doing some strength weekly too, that will be fantastic for you. Hope this helps! All the best! Claire

Any tips for preventing blisters? I have seen some people put vaseline on their feet, does that help?

Yes! I used to put plasters around my toes but someone said Vaseline.....so for the last few weeks I’ve used it and so far so good 🤞

@@trishthorne9044 thanks, I will try it. I have been using plasters too but they don't help much.
