Love the delayed throttle throw mainly because it's quiet! Even electric motors are loud- especially next to your ear! Seems to perform just as well this way, too. Very informative video. Thx Andrew.
Thanks for this great outline Andrew ... my Ranger2000 kept dipping on take off and now all makes perfect sense .. now have throttle at 1/3 and no dips 👍👍👍👍
This youtube clip should be part of the BIXLER instructions. Could not fly at home because its a hill (no level strip) and kept crashing my Bix 3 until I saw this clip and I now fly from home on the throw and throttle. Opened up a whole new flying option for me thanks for sharing.
I like it very much. Before I thought it was because thrust angle right now it may also caused by low airspeed. Hope you can have a post about how thrust angle influence on it. Because other videos can't understand easily and clear. thanks man!
Not sure which is better the launching technique or the one hand grabs while talking about the launch! This explains a lot, a lot of what I was doing wrong.
Andrew, At long last, I can rebuild/repair my my Axon and fling it, and not in anger! I like the way you prove your point eloquently by demonstration. Thanks a million!.
Great tip on launching this type of plane. I wish I had come across a video like this before I launched my Ranger G2 the first time as it nosed right into the ground. Thanks for the video and Happy Launching!
Love the catch at 3:56. Gameface on and fully functional. Whenever I try to catch something my face looks like I'm about to catch an artillery shell in flight... :)
Omg. A few days ago i tried to launch volantex ranger 2000 and had several dips and crashes. I tried to launch it 6 times at full throttle and as a result right now i need to fix smashed stabiliser. If only i could have known that push throttle is not very good idea. Thank you.
Andrew, I replied before about your awesome instructional Dip method and now as I approach my 20th flight on my Ranger 1600 (stock) Gens Ace 2200 I agree with you even more. I also added an APC props 8 X 4e which decreased noise with a fraction more power with better mAh burn. I typically bingo at 15 mins using about 1400 mAh with spare for a shitty approach or two. I'm totally chicken to try just the firm throw with NO throttle like you !!!😮
Ohhhh, it's a darn shame they didn't build flaps on it. Being a heavy beast and quite underpowered, it lands quite hard n fast. The belly nubs take most of the landing shock thankfully. Cheers Mate.
Good tip. Wish I could catch like you. My ranger 1600 arrives this week, was looking for a new plane for FPV and after watching your review I ordered it. Thanks
Great subject! Always an issue, especially if not able to throw directly into the wind. I have gotten where I also dial in a helping of up elevator trim to aid in keeping thing headed skyward. :)
I'm launching my Ranger 1600 at full throttle on 4s! Not having done the testing you have I thought I needed more power to avoid the dip.It seems to work though. I give it a hard throw with my right arm and then quickly to the sticks. Also thanks to you I've got a Paris Sirius Air Hero 32 getting ready to install. Thanks for the great videos they really keep me going.
Andrew, as a beginner I am so fond of dipping my Hawksky V2 that I usually go for a double dip, your video is spot on. Very well done. I actually enjoy having a little wind in my face as it definitely helps me get airborne quicker. It is actually harder to launch on a totally calm day, the launch gets a little more stressful for me. I am a dentist, Andrew, easy on the "incisor throttle modulation" there, sir ! You may want to put a rubber thingy over your throttle stick !
Andrew, I think we could make you a retainer with a built-in throttle stick adaptor. You would only wear it on flying days . I once saw a lower bicuspid implant made for a rugby player , he didn't want the tooth replaced, just an easy way to open his beer bottles.
I get a mate to throw for me and it's launched at a bit over half throttle (1250kv motor/4s Lipo) on high rates full up elevator. Does not need a particularly strong throw and works fine.
I just purchased the Ranger 1600 after MANY searches for a good quality ALL Rounder. There very few reviews out there on the VR1600 but I bought it on your review only... Still yet to fly and try but I have just finished the build (PNF) and it looks and feels like it will fly well, tested 1/2 throttle today on my living room floor, (polished wood) and it just wanted to lift off. Will let you know how I go when I get the courage to "chuck it". Thanks Andrew..
Thank you Andrew! I’ve just built a Bixler - my first fixed wing. Now, I’m left handed but fly mode 2. Why didn’t I think to throw it left handed? I had 3 goes throwing it right handed which of course I need for the elevator. All three failed, the last one dismantled the wing! Fixed now and waiting for my mate to buddy up and teach me!
Andrew, thanks for the video! I agree, getting speed fast is very important. I might have a tips for pusher planes, I learned by coincidence: Instead of holding the plane under the wings, try holding it in the front while throwing it. Watch your head while throwing. I found this to be much better giving a straighter throw, when my problem was the plane ending up with wings vertical orientated and the plane crashing.
Good stuff Andrew, I also have a switch assigned on my Taranis to give a little up trim for launches, it also helps me clear a fence nearby (usually..) Thanks again.
A high thrust line on a flying wing can be even more exciting. Some people experimenting with putting engines on hang gliders in the 70's found this out the hard way. Very tumble prone.
Well I need to confirm throwing method is important. A while ago 5/6 throws of my flying wings were into the ground. Then I started to throw it at the angle up and everything is fine. I'm waiting for my Ranger 2000 and other RC plane models to arrive, hopefully I can build them well and not ruin in on the first flight :)
Great stuff, I had to learn this lesson through pain! I now add a touch of up elevator on a switch for my heavier planes, gives a few more moments to get hands on the sticks.
hi Andrew I have been crashing my skysurfer for 3 weeks now never flew before thought "it cant be that hard " after watching this vid i finally got to fly yesterday 3 times first 2 were ok but rough landings my third flight i went in nose first and totally destroyer the front i got my plane in a hobby shop in Hanoi had no idea how to build and wire it up but all good now thanks for your videos i am learning all the time i even enjoy fixing up the demage cheers John viet tri vietnam
Great Demo Andrew, a lot of people dont realise the motor will push the model into the floor....I had undercarriage on my loaded up FPV Bixler 2.....short grass...easy take off......I so want one of those Ranger 1600s....Stop taunting me....lol....:)
Or, to make it absolutely foolproof, create a throttle elevator mix using a custom curve, activated by a spare switch on the transmitter. I use this for all hand launches, especially for side launches with flying wings on conjunction with INAV or Arduplane auto level modes. That takes all the drama out of my hand launches ... as long as I remember to flip this switch.
A few washers under the motor mount to correct the "trust angle" gets rid of the "push down" effect of the motor. Experiment so that you don't need any change in elevator regardless of throttle.
I've got to push your prop glider it's the only glider in 25 years that still feels like a glider that has a motor but it might be because it's rudder only
I have half up elevator on a switch for my Ranger 1600 - launch with it switched in & then flick it off after a few seconds when it it's picked up some airspeed & is clear of the ground. (edit: oops, just noticed this is three years old).
Hey Andrew, can you make a scratch build video on Rcfactory 3d profile foamies?i like those models very much but need a lot of plans and info to make them.can you make one?
Hello Andrew, I am a new subscriber and also a beginner to RC planes. I am so glad to see this video where you take the time to show how to launch. I wanted to ask when you throw the plane and give it half throttle, is it that all you have to do is pull back on the elevator like in those 3ch planes or with this one as it is 4ch you have to move the ailerons as well?
Depends on the plane and the wind. You might have to pull back on the elevator and adjust ailerons if the plane starts to roll, but on a calm day just a little elevator
@@AndrewNewton not much better than a smooth hand catch 👌🏼 and putting such a smooth gliding plane right at your feet so many times. I just ordered the Ranger for a new fpv platform and I was pleased to see that you're a fan of it! Love your videos 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Hello sir Andrew, watching your videos helped me a lot on my first flight. But I always failed on my hand catch landing. Do you have tutorials for hand catch landing?
I never get the "dip" with my 1600, but i do give it a near level chuck rather than nose up and only half throttle max on launch, do you fancy doing a short video on using flaps as i have ordered a set of 2000 wings to go flap on my 1600
Idea: I wonder if an atlatl would provide the desired air speed. Google "atlatl." I tried one with an inexpensive glider. After a little practice, it is amazing. Edit: Lucas Weakley already has a video out on using an atlatl launcher.
I think you're doing a lot of showing off because you keep catching your planes lol. On the other hand, its pretty cool to see. I'm not comfortable catching my planes. Anyway....this was a good video to watch. I'm sure someone(s) will find it helpful. Great video, Andrew!
Andrew do you think that it will be easier to launch with a flight controller in stabilize mode (eg with pixhawk/ardupilot stabilize mode keep the plane leveled) Thanks
I have a Bixler 2 that needs about 5mm of up elevator trim to fly level at half throttle. The C of G is on the leading edge of the spar cover strip. Is this amount of trim normal?
Edit: found the problem: one of the bullet connectory is loose. Hello Mr. Newton, i bought a Ranger 1600 pnp and after the 3rd flight the motor stutters whenn trotteling up, sometimes for quite a while, even when i cut the throttle. I run it on 4s, as i only have those quad batterys, but the esc says clearly "2-4s". Did i damage it? Is it a timing problem? I am confused and a little bit disappointed because it is the best flying plane i ever owned and now i dont want to fly it in case the motor fails on me. Please help😥
Well, ya know Andrew, when you're rich and famous like me (I think my nose just grew) you have people to do these things for you.... LMAO!! Truthfully, I'm very lucky to have my flying mates, especially my friend Shane. I have RA pretty bad and my ability to do stuff gets harder and harder to do. Shane and I became friends about 4 years ago and I'd say we have become BFFs. One of the nicest kindest guys I've ever met. I'm pretty lucky... :) I can throw though... See here.... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OA7TSG5p6EY.html
Thanks Andrew, that was useful as I've had a few failed launches with my volantex ranger 1600. Must admit that I have found using my mouth on the throttle and left hand throw allowing for the right hand on the control works pretty well. I will give the launch from glide a try too as this looks fun but probably is easier with something a bit lighter than the ranger! Used another video of yours for advice on the flaperons. Do you launch with flaps down ever?
Hi Andrew, I've finished my scratch build of the photon I was telling you about the last time I posted. I have a wider body and my ready to fly weight is 1300g. Running a 2200kv motor with a 6x4prop. Would you still recommend a hand launch. I've got about 800 to 900grams of thrust. May have to use landing gear or change the motor to a 1400kv. What do you think. I'll do a RU-vid on it soon and give you the link.
I'm wondering if I could get used to mode one. I never considered it at th start and all, both om my main TXes are mode two. Maybe it was linked to my years racing RC cars before I bought my first steerwheel transmitter. But I'm a great thrower with the ol' right arm and won the Throwing The Cricket Ball contest at school when I was twelve!
Hey @Andrew. I can't find anywhere on internet the Volantex ranger 1600 weight (takeoff weight or empty.) Can you please tell me the weight of the Volantex? I heard that you sayd that it's heawyer than bixler. Do you know. How much heavier? Thank you. Tudor.
You're right, I haven't recorded the weight anywhere. Mine is 1450g loaded up with 4S 3000, Matek F405 Wing Flight Controller, Caddx Tarsier camera, AKK VTx. Empty weight just over 1000g with no FPV gear
