Driveway coming along nicely anxious to see when done and you guys decide what to put there would be awesome to see a log cabin put among all those trees but one of those shed/cabins would be nice as well faster and probably more cost effective a friend/ contractor of mine and his dad purchased 60 acres in Montgomery county Missouri to hunt close to river mostly wooded they bought a prebuilt Kitte shed built a platform atop utility poles for a deer stand like 14ft in air and set shed on top with excavator they rented cleared a couple trails thru property and for time and cost two more stands on platforms using those plastic shed kits on platforms as well on various spots on property in ope of getting done and deer getting use to them being there they have cameras set up shows deer around all three stands already even with them during construction of blinds so should have good hunt this season the prebuilt shed had windows pre installed three sides they bought some cheap aluminum sliders to put in plastic shed stand kits worked out well blend in pretty nice with surroundings brown n tan green n tan color schemes using me buddy propane heaters in all three solar led light fixtures for a little light inside

Mike we have some property in Henderson Tx. and we planted pine trees on it about 35 or 36 years ago. We got with the forest service and they keep an eye on the trees to let us know when to do some harvesting. When the trees were about 18 to 20 years old they harvested some for pulp wood to thin the trees. They get the company to do the harvesting and have someone there to monitor the number of loads hauled out. In 2021 they went back in and harvested some timber and in a few years will harvest more. I think dealing with the forest service is a good deal. Hope all is well with the Morgan Family.

Lived in the country all my life. Burned my share of brush. Not a criticism... you should think about saving those tops for brush piles. The small critters will take up residence. It not only provides homes for small critters, but it also provides safety from preditors, etc. Far better for the overall property to increase all forms of wildlife. It all works together and it all benefits you and the property. Give it some serious thought.

If so, something to consider; clearing out a portion if the "island" for a camp fire area/burn pit/outdoor kitchen/swimming pool (for Melissa....ha!). I really appreciate the content that you share.

Mike I think the only good thing about them not thinning or doing anything is it prevented the hardwoods from growing up in the pines. Cause if you think you do a 50% thin its going to open up a ton more light and opportunities for the hardwoods to sprout up and grow

Seeing you push down and burn so many of the Red Pine makes me ask the question: Seeing how you cut wood at your home and built sheds and shelters, are you intending to do that at the new property, and wouldn't some of that Red Pine be good for storage sheds, maybe elevated structures like your hunting blind, or for other uses? I know most people don't use Pine for interior fireplaces, but for those using outdoor wood fired heaters, would that work in a mix with hardwood?
@shanereynolds5971
@shanereynolds5971 Год назад
He is saving the logs that are sutible for the sawmill. Those he is burning are too small or damaged. As for firewood, even in an outdoor burner, pine isn't a good option as it takes a long time to properly season and then will produce much lower BTU per cord.

I like what you did Mike, by making that circle drive way. It should come in very handy when you actually start the cabin project. One thing I might if you don’t mind suggest is the you use the excavator to brake off those low short horizontal dried branch stubs that stick out from the trees to the height above that Ty and Thia so that they cannot hurt themselves when coming to visit in the future. You know how kids like to run around chasing each other.

Looking good down in WV. Can I ask, why not cut up those red pines for use as firewood right there on the property after you get a cabin built. Seems to be a waste to just burn them up. Offer it up for free or start selling it down there too. But, I'm sure its all in the plan. I just love watching and learning.

@billmorris2613
@billmorris2613 Год назад
Soft woods especially pines leave flammable deposits on the inside of the chimney that can cause a chimney fire. They should never be used as firewood for an inside fireplace or wood stove. Hard woods only like oak or pecan.
@Dorchwoods
@Dorchwoods Год назад
Agreed, red pine is the best camp fire wood. It gets a bad rep online. Obviously it's not suitable for a wood stove, but it's top notch for campfire wood. It's the only thing I'll sell and I sell 30-40 cords of it worth as bundles every summer! 🏕️

Wondering mike on average what is the spacing on the red pines? Around here they are roughly 12-14’ apart when they do a thinning up here. That’s with big equiptment doing it. When I do them I go around 8-10’ apart roughly. But I do low impact chainsaw and a skid steer. I’m finding lot more folks liking the low impact so the forest floor isn’t all torn up. Also we to take out every other row.
