Russia attacked Kharkov to extend the front, stretch the AFU line of contact and force them to deploy their strategic reserves, not to capture the city. Underestimating your enemy is the fastest way to lose.
Ukraine had already deployed their reserves to Kharkiv because everyone could see Russia massing forces there. All Russia had to do was sit safely on their own side of the border an shell Ukraine without fear of retaliation. Instead they decided to walk into the meat grinder and give western countries the motivation to allow the use of their weapons on Russian territory.

The Ukrainians are having a very difficult time stopping the Ruzzians. They're doing what they can, but they need more of everything, including boots on the ground and units better trained in offensive capabilities. They are not going to defend their way to victory.
