Sergei Markov is a liar - I lived in Odessa for 7 years until the war. Everyone spoke Russian. No one I met in Odesa spoke Ukrainian. The only place I heard them speaking Ukrainian was in Lyviv and the Carpathian mountains

You cannot work for the Ukraine state unless you speak Ukrainian. That is a fact, the EU even brings it up as a problem. Remember all the country speak Russian, a third of people only speak Russian.

He wasn't very eloquent in English but still managed to get his point across. Ukraine is Russia's soft underbelly so they won't allow an aggressive military alliance (NATO) to occupy it.

I think his initial comment was taken out of context. He is entirely right in saying in Putin's mind the West caused this war. I'm not saying it is factually correct because we know better but Putin being an extreme narcissist will blame literally anything for his actions as long as he doesn't have to accept any responsibility himself. If Putin thought a battalion of rainbow coloured unicorns were put on the border of Ukraine and Russia by Iceland to attack Russia he would have used it as justification for the war. That said he is wrong to suggest Ukraine should negotiate for peace with Russia because Putin has already outlined what he considers would constitute a peace deal, ie (paraphrased) "give me everything I have illegally annexed and I will stop fighting you". Which of course is not in Ukraine's interests in the slightest and certainly would not be the end of it, merely a pause in Russian aggression.

@@cantiaci On point. We all know, the sentence "... and I will stop fighting you." is a pure lie. He wants at least Odesa to get access to Moldova and control over the Black Sea, so we'll be here again in a few years. For the next "give me everything I have illegally annexed and...".

That's the problem with narcs, they think they are far cleverer than everyone else and we can't see through his BS. @fairhall001 Besides, Russian is not prohibited there. I had a court case for a car accident and the judge spoke to me in Russian. Russian, no longer is cumpolsary in school, just like French and Spanish are in English schools.

If ukrainian language is just russian, as he claims, then everyone in Ukraine speaks russian, and what is he complaining about? I'll just point out again that the lexical distance between the Ukrainian and Russian languages is 38, which is just slightly further apart than Dutch and English (37) So, why can't brits just speak Dutch?

@medeology4660 Yes. But admitting to this also implies that Ukrainian is a subset of the Russian language. This is absolutely untrue. They are both slavic languages, just like Polich and Czech. If anything, the opposite is true, considering Kiev predates Moscow by at least 450 years. Also we know that Moscow was founded by the brother of Oleg the wise (Prince of Kiev)

Some words are the same but their pronounciation is so different that I often realize the similarities only when I read it. Russia, established in the 15th century when Ivan III broke free from the khanate, is much younger than most European nations, Moscow is a little more than half the age of Kyiv. I don't know if you can say either language is older, since they've evolved as different branches from the same stem, are still evolving, and I don't know when they "split". But it would seem reasonable if russian is the younger branch. I'll have to dive into some linguistic studies to figure that out.

Thanks for clarifying that. I know the general situation of the Russian language in Ukraine but not the details. It is extremely aggravating to listen to Putin supporters say that Russian speakers were persecuted and Russian is banned in Ukraine. It is Ukrainian that was suppressed for centuries under the Russians (but projection is Russia's main defence). The majority of the Ukrainian refugees in my city, as well as RU-vidrs I follow, are Russian speakers - they all see themselves as Ukrainian and want nothing to do with Russia. As you mentioned, many of them are trying to only speak Ukrainian now (but for older people it is difficult).
